It was coming, we all knew it was headed toward this that a social media challenge would spiral to viral status and result in what is commonly known as normal transmission in 2018...
By normal transmission, I mean Drake at number one. "In My Feelings" rode enormous sales and streaming to rise from number 3 to take the number one spot to make Drake's THIRD Australian number one this year following likely year end number one "God's Plan" (11 weeks) and "Nice for What?" (2 weeks) meaning Drake has now spent almost double the amount of time at number one of this week's number two single.
That number two is the previous number one for eight weeks 'Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer which was never going to match the virality of the current "In My Feelings" challenge craze, it's showing signs that it could be vulnerable to a stronger challenger.
However that challenger isn't going to be "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5 feat. Cardi B, Drake pushed this song back and it's also showing signs of weakness as well so I would expect to see this begin a slow descent out of the top ten.
Dean Lewis is the second Australian act within the top ten as "Be Alright" rose 1 place to number 4 on the back of some pretty strong sales and doing okay on streaming. If that continues, it could potentially go number 2 or 3 next week if that keeps up.
Our highest debut this week is at number 5 with Ariana Grande's second official single from "Sweetener" entitled "God is a Woman". Now while I am not convinced the song is all that god , it was a pretty strong player on streaming and if sales pick up as well than it could well also take advantage of the weaknesses of "Youngblood" and "Girls Like You"
What won't be taking advantage is "Better Now" by Post Malone which really only stayed where it is because nothing behind it was able to make the jump past it.
"Don't Matter to Me" by Drake feat. Michael Jackson (it feels so wrong with Michael dead tbh) fell 3 spots to number 7 which quite frankly isn't fast enough...it needs to be gone and the sooner the better.
The biggest gainer this week sits at number 8 and it's a return to the top ten for "I Said Hi" by Amy Shark which rode the boost from the release of Shark's debut album "Love Monster" to make a welcome return to the top ten.
The next two songs aren't that good though with "2002" by Anne Marie remaining at number 9 and :"Solo" by Clean Bandit feat. Demi Lovato showing signs it may well be on the way out as it dropped 3 places to number 10.
Gainers.
So apart from Amy Shark's big rise with "I Said Hi", "Ocean" by Martin Garrix and Khaluid rose from 18 to 12, "Healing Hands" by Conrad Sewell jumped from 21 to 14 (expecting another good jump for this song next week as well) and "Jackie Chan" by Tiesto feat. Dzeko, Preme and Post Malone jumped from 24 to 15.
Another big mover was Kygo and Imagine Dragons collab "Born to Be Yours" jumping from 37 to 29.
Is there a surprise hit in the pipeline for Panic! At the Disco? "High Hopes" jumped 4 places to 34
As rhere were no re-entries...let's get to...
Losers
Happy to report the biggest loser this week was "Sad!" by XXXtentacion which slipped from 11 to 24, "Changes" slipped from 40 to 45 and :"Jocelyn Flores" from 39 to 44.
As for Drake, "Nice for What" went down to 17, "Nonstop" lives up to falling nonstop as it went to 23 from 17, "God's Plan" fell to 28 from 23 and "I'm Upset" went to 43 from 35. (Glad to see all the Drake songs falling, really am sick of hearing about him)
There were other assorted drops with mostly songs that would seem to have made the year end list anyway with "Love Lies" by Khalid and Normani down to 39 from 34, "Psycho" by Post Malone feat. Ty Dolla $ign down to 37 from 31, "One Kiss" by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa went to 20 from 14 and "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran down to 35 from 32.
"Hurt Somebody" by Noah Kahan went down to 41 from 36.
Drop Outs
Really only four drop outs this week with the biggest of them being former number one "This is america" by Childish Gambino (we're not finished talking about him just yet though!)
The others were Drake's "Emotionless", "Boo'd Up" by Ella Mai which has struggled for traction here despite it's success in the USA and "Happier" by Ed Sheeran.
New Entries
Apart from the debut of "God is a Woman" by Ariana Grande, what else debuted this week? Peking Duk's EP "Fire/Reprisal" arrived at 16.
The new single for Childish Gambino "Summertime Magic" entered at 31 while Ed Sheeran's producer Benny Blanco has debuted at 32 with "Eastside" feat. Halsey and Khalid.
The last of the new arrivals belongs to the Hilltop Hoods featuring Adrian Eagle with "Clark Griswold" entering at 48.
