2000 Sound: 28th May: Vanessa Amorosi shines her way to a top five debut while Sisqo asks the ladies if he can see their thong

Alright so there's plenty helping this week including a slew of new entries. Pity that doesn't include the very top of our top ten where Destiny's Child rules for a fourth week with "Say My Name" however that grip on number one is being challenged by "Oops!...I Did It Again" by Britney Spears which is closing the sales margin and may well overtake "Say My name" next week.

All this leaves "Never be the Same Again" by Mel C and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes out in the cold a bit remaining at at number three as it's not really a challenger for number one right now, it just doesn't have the numbers the songs above it does.

For yet another week, there's a new entry to the chart in the top ten and it comes from Australian singer Vanessa Amorosi with "Shine", this ballad had an excellent first week of sales and yeah, it's nice to see an Aussie artist debut a new song so highly, it pushed "Adelante" by Sash! back to number five (I am just surprised this is hanging on as well as it is).

Pink's "There You Go" rose three places to number six and remains a contender to go top five, it's got some very real traction right now so wouldn't be surprised.

Toni Braxton continues to confound everything I said about top ten debuts a few weeks ago as "He Wasn't Man Enough" remains at number seven this week.

Bardot's "Poison" continues to fall, this time three places to number eight and really Pink's big move up to six might have triggered a domino effect because "Holiday" by Naughty by Nature took a one place fall to number nine and "Bye Bye Bye" by *NSYNC dropped four places to number ten...okay, that last one might have happened anyway.

Gains.

The slew of new entries meant that big gains were limited this week however Shaft's "Mambo Italiano" broke into the top ten up from 24 to 17 as did "Rock Me All Night" by Kaylan up from 22 to 18, those two brought along Matchbox Twenty's "Bent" which rose eight places to 19 this week.

M2M's "Mirror Mirror" rose six places to 30 this week. Again, I am not certain this song will be a hit.

Christine Anu's "Sunshine on a Rainy Day' rose ten places to 33 in one of the biggest gains of the week.

Re-Entries

Just the one return this week with Ilanda's "Breakin' There's No Stoppin' Us" back at number 38. 

Losers

There were plenty of big losers this week, Five's "Don't Wanna Let You Go" suddenly let go of number 19 to hit number 28 this week. 

:"Still" by Macy Gray got moving except it was in the wrong direction down from 21 last week to 35! Ouch!. "Bloke" by Chris Franklin lost it's ockers down nine to 39 this week.

Vanessa Amorosi's big top ten hit "Absolutely Everybody" suddenly hit the skids to fall ten places to 44 while Oblivia fell twelve places to 47 with "My Friend" and Christina Aguilera's ballad "I Turn to You" dropped nine places to 49 (not surprising, its a strange turn for Christina).

In the most pleasing news of this week is that "American Pie" by Madonna is on the brink of the exit dropping nine to fifty. Thank fucking christ for that. 

New Entries

We have a busy...and varied week in the new entries, folks. I already mentioned "Shine" by Vanessa Amorosi debuting in the top ten at number four but outside of that we also got rockers 28 Days with "Rip It Up" in at 16.

Finnish hip hop group Bomfunk MCs. have their first Australian charting song with "Freestyler" in at 22 (it's not a good song at all)

An American rock supergroup that includes Tool front man Maynard Keenan called A Perfect Circle are in at 25 with "Judith". Bit of a surprise there!.

Aqua's "Around the World" arrive at 36 while American hip hop act Sisqo has his first Australian charting song asking ladies if he can see their thong in "Thong Song" at number 40.

Dance act Groove Terminator arrive at 41 with "One More Time (The Sunshine Song)".

ARIA Singles Top Ten/Chart Review: 25th May. Rockstar reaches the top of the summit

This week while better than last week was still a frustrating one but we saw some interesting shifts with a new number one and a song that debuted last week looking like it has some real traction going forward but firstly to the big story which lays in our top ten with our new number one that being "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch which got to the top thanks to streaming where it is dominant, its not QUITE there are on sales but if this gets sales as well then this could spend a considerable time at the time even allowing for the big debut due next week that we'll talk about later.

It pushed "Roses" by Saint JHN back to number two as "Rockstar" went past it on streaming and sales are starting to show signs of slowing, the same could go for "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd back to number three as streaming slows down but sales remain decent however they are starting to bleed so we'll have to wait and see I guess.

A one place fall to number four was also in order for "Stuck On You" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. Frankly given how forgettable this song is, I am surprised it didn't fall further but anyway, "Say So" by Doja Cat held steady at number five this week as streaming starts to show signs of slipping as sales already have so this song could leave the top ten sooner rather than later. Good

Regaining one place to number six is "Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion as it recovered a little ground on streaming. Would be nice if this went back into the top 5, its a pretty good song.

What isn't going back into the top five is "Toosie Slide" by Drake which slid one place to number seven, this thing is hanging on because streaming can't let it die, it's a fucking TikTok MEME for crying out loud, Australia!

The rest of the top ten held their places this week that being "Death bed" by Powfu feat. Beabadoobee at number eight, "Supalonely" by BENEE feat Gus Dapperton at number nine and "Don't Start Now' by Dua Lipa rounding out the top ten at number ten.

Gains

So Topic's "Breaking Me" feat. A7S is the biggest gainer this week up a massive 24 places to 25 this week which is great as I actually don't mind the song.

Breaking into the top 20 though is "ILY" by Surf Mesa feat Emilee up 8 places to 17 this week. I'm now pretty indifferent to this song now.

What I am not thrilled about is Don Toliver's "After Party" getting a 12 place boost up to 34. No, Australia, we do not need this load of garbage to become a hit, there's enough garbage making the year end all fucking ready,


Re Entries

The only re-entry this week is Future's "Life Is Good" feat. Drake which re-entered at 45 probably due to the two different versions on Future's album "High off Life". Not that it matters really because the song sucks.

Losers

Unfortunately this week's biggest loser was Juice WRLD's "Righteous" which fell 13 spots again to 41 this week. Bit of a shame given the song is pretty good considering it's posthumous Juice WRLD song.

Maroon 5's "Memories" takes a well deserved seven place slip to 47. Thank god.

Meduza's "Lose Control" feat. Becky Hill and Goodboys drops six places to 49


Drop Outs

Well I ain't complaining about this week's drop outs with "Say It Again" by OneFour feat. A$AP Ferg, "I'm Ready" by Sam Smith and Demi Lovato, "Falling" by Trevor Daniel and "City of Angels" by 24kGOLDN all gone.

New Entries

Just the three new entries this week with "Daisies" by Katy Perry debuting at 37. Definitely not the high debut she's accustomed to but we'll see if this song can get some organic groundswell behind it.

Another TikTok meme has entered the chart in the form of "Party Girl" by StaySolidRocky at number 41, a hip hop act that I do wonder the point of explaining who he is because I can see him becoming a one hit wonder and "Party Girl" is pretty awful.

Finally Kygo is back on the chart and brought Ryan Tedder and the rest of OneRepublic along for the ride with "Lose Somebody" at number 45.

So that wraps up the week. Expecting a big top ten debut for Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's collab. Not sure what other new entries will hit the chart otherwise, guess we'll find out on next Saturday at 5pm.

ARIA Top Twenty Ranked: Week of 18th May 2020

I haven't done one of these for awhile and it was about time to take a good, hard look at the ARIA Singles top 20 and see what quality is there so now is the time especially as there's a lot to go through with this week's top 20 and I need to have a few words about several songs.

Granted I have decided to leave "Dance Monkey by Tones and I out, it was at number 16 this week but because that song made the year end list last year and won't go any higher on the 2020 year end list, I have decided to leave it out and replace it with the next available song below the top 20. 

To explain how the ranking works, tiers are used:

Awful = 0 points
Bad = 1 point per song
Meh = 2 points per song
Decent = 3 points per song
Good = 4 points per aong 
Excellent = 5 points per song

Now that is out of the way, let's get this show on the road with the absolute bottom of the barrel.

Awful

20, "Gooba" by Soundcloud Waifu (6ix9ine)

There's literally nothing to this song when it's just Soundcloud Waifu shouting over another unimpressive beat and frequent use of the n-word which should result in him being called out for using it as a white person, I thought it was wrong for white people to use said word? This song is ultimately pointless and has no place in being on the charts.

Speaking of pointless...

19. "Toosie Slide" by Drake

This song is as pointless as "Gooba". it only exists because Drake wanted to make the most boring and vapid dance song that has little to no energy that he can just drone over because the masses will just lap it up. Thank goodness that unlike elsewhere this song didn't go to number one.

18.  "Intentions" by Justin Bieber feat Quavo

For awhile, this song was the stand out for the absolute worst of 2020 and honestly...it still is. The song suffers from misogynistic and baffling regressive lyrics about her staying in the kitchen cooking up her own bread, the weird nonsense shouting out this girl's parents for making her  and the line "heart full of equity, you're an asset" which is just stupid and then there's the beat which is so bare bones and lazy; This song is skin crawlingly repulsive which remarkably fits with the rest of that album I guarantee only the Biebe diehards remember he released this year.

Bad

17. 'Say So" by Doja Cat

So honestly I think this song is pretty unimpressive, a washed out disco beat that makes Doja Cat sound harsher than she needs to be when she is rapping. It's not a good song and the Nicki Minaj remix only makes it worse in that Nicki does nothing to add to the song with her verse and her verse is just completely tacked on. NEXT!

16. "Sunday Best" by Surfaces

The production is clunky and the lyrics are so cliched. The vocal delivery is obnoxious. Enough said.


15. "Stuck With You" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber.

Charity songs are fine and if it achieves its intended purpose to raise money for charity than great but it doesn't excuse the cheap production that makes Ariana sound absolutely terrible, she is not good over a trap beat but she really would be the only reach to listen to this song especially when Bieber sounds checked out or bored or possibly both.

14. "Death Bed" by Powfu feat. Beabadoobee

Time hasn't been kind this song, a few weeks ago I would have put this in the meh tier but I just can't handle Beabadoobee's crooning behind Powfu's rap...there's no real melody to this so more often than not. BLEURGH.

Meh

13. "Roses" by Saint JHN

I just don't care for this song at all. It has no impact on me whatsoever. It's just another remixed electronic song. 

12. "The Scotts" by The Scotts (Travis Scott/Kid Cudi)

Oh Travis Scott made "Highest in the Room" again for 2020 except he brought Kid Cudi along for the ride. Would be nice if they could have put some effort in that might make me CARE.


Decent

11. "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch

This song is only barely just decent, it's pretty much just DaBaby and Roddy Ricch flexing but really it's probably one of the better hip hop tracks on the chart this week.

10. "Boss Bitch" by Doja Cat

This is tolerable even if Doja Cat sounds like she is trying to pull her best Nicki Minaj impersonation. It's fine enough and I wouldn't change the radio station if it came on however I wouldn't seek it out otherwise.

9. "Pump It Up" by Endor

It's a nice hype song but doesn't lyrically expand much beyond "Don't you know, pump it up, you got to pump it up". Again not one I'll seek out but wouldn't be annoyed if it was on the radio.

8. "Supalonely" by BENEE and Gus Dapperton

I don't know how I feel about this song, I get the appeal given the times we are in right now and maybe that's why I feel like it's just decent rather than purely meh. "Glitter" is better than this though.


Good

7. "You Should be Sad" by Halsey

This isn't Halsey at her best on Manic ("3am" is by far the best song on that album) but if we're going to get close to country on the ARIA chart (because we can't get "Does to Me" by Luke Combs feat. Eric Church to chart) then I will take this...We're not done with Halsey though...

6. "Be Kind" by Marshmello and Halsey

So before this song was released I was filled with dread upon learning that Marshmello and Halsey had been working together on a song, Both have consistently made my year end worst lists however much to my surprise "Be Kind" is a pretty good pop song, yes there's some production issues but this is probably the best work Marshmello has done behind the desk in awhile and the writing is fine enough.

5. "Savage"  by Megan Thee Stallion

There is a part of me that feels like this song is the light weight version of a song that Janelle Monae could make awesome but this is still good, Megan Thee Stallion just oozes charisma and personality all over one of the better songs on that EP of hers and Beyonce just kills it on the remix, she makes it a completely different song and schooled everyone on how to make remixes GOOD.


Excellent

4. "Don't Start Now" by Dua Lipa

So word of warning, there are two Dua Lipa songs in the excellent category, "Future Nostalgia" is one of the best pop albums of 2020 and while "Don't Start Now" is still great, it's kind of worn on me a little especially as "Physical" slays but hey as a kiss off to an ex, this is fantastic.

3. "Break My Heart" by Dua Lipa.

Like I said when you have a killer song like "Physical", that song can overshadow everything Dua releases after it but "Break My Heart" is a really great song that interpolates "Need You Tonight" by INXS (the interpolation isn't hard to miss tbh) where Dua Lipa is musing about this guy she's fallen for but realizes that he may well only just break her heart.

2. "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd.

Everyone and their mothers collectively love this song, this is The Weeknd doing pop at his best. Let's just leave it at that, shall we?

1. "Adore You" by Harry Styles

It was close for number one and for the longest time, "Blinding Lights" was going to take the top spot but in the end I just couldn't deny this well executed love song that sees Harry Styles vocal delivery remind me markedly of Crowded House's "World Where You Live" (a song I love) and that chorus just sticks in your head. "Walk through fire for you. Just let me adore you, it's the only thing I'll ever do"...


Total

So we have 3 awful songs, 4 bad songs, 2 meh songs, 4 decent songs, 3 good songs and four excellent songs giving us a total of 47/100 making this a "Ehhh, Needs to improve big time"

2000 Sound: 21st May. Oops, Britney's debuted at number two

So let's get stuck straight in as  we've got a busy week here, starting with the top ten where Destiny's Child remains at number one for another week with "Say My Name" but unlike last week, it's now got a challenger because right behind it is Britney Spears with her lead single "Oops!...I Did It Again" at number two and this song is a challenger for number one with those sales!.

What's not a challenger is "Never Be the Same Again" by Mel C and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes which got pushed back to number three, its starting to slip on sales although radio still loves this song to pieces, I get the feeling this might become a staple.long term.

"Adelante" by Sash! remains steady at number four which is not what can be said "Poison" by Bardot which slipped two places to number five or for "Bye Bye Bye" by *NSYNC which dropped one place to number 7

Toni Braxton's "He Wasn't Man Enough" rebounded this week up three places to number seven somehow. Not really sure I like the song but okay....


Naughty by Nature remain steady at number eight with "Holiday", they seem to be vacationing at that spot lately.

Into the top ten for the fiirst time is Pink with "There You Go" jumping two places to number nine while finally "Don't Give Up" by Chicane feat. Bryan Adams plummets four places to number ten.

Gains

The gains this week are all over the shop with the biggest being Westlife's "Flying Without Wings" which got a ten spot boost up to 31. 

Shaft's "Mambo Italiano" rose six places to 24 this wee as it continues it's rise. 

Losers

The biggest loser this week without question is Pearl James "Nothing As It Seems' which plummeted from number 7 to 29 this week! That's on trend with a number of top ten debuts lately.

Also falling hard was "Pray" by Tina Cousins which slipped from 32 to 46 this week...Ouch.

Hanson's "If Only" plunged nine to 44 while "Caught out There" by Kelis hit the skids down six to 39. and the underwhelming "Two in a Million" by S Cluh 7 drops from 25 to 32 (maybe after telling people you are a party band, not the best idea to drop a sappy ballad as your next single0.

New Entries

It's a fairly busy week for new entries and it wasn't just Britney Spears at number two with "Oops!...I Did It Again". Bon Jovi are back with "It's My Life" at number 12 (this song is potentially going to be huge on radio)

Christine Anu's cover of Zoe's 1990 hit "Sunshine on a Rainy" hits the chart at number 43.

Then we have a cluster of new entries starred by American country superstar Faith Hill's new song "Breathe" in at number 48 (a song that looks like being massive in the US), there's another UK boyband on the chart this time called Point Break and their tough sounding new single "Stand Tough" (Catchy chorus but my god those verses are kind of...yikes) at number 49 and finally electronic act Moloko hit the chart with "The Time is now at number 50.

Top Ten Best Hit Songs of 1974

I have always wanted to cover a year from the seventies in terms of a top ten list, part of this is this curiosity I have surrounding the music if the seventies which saw the first half of the decade hold onto soul, jazz and funk before the latter half of the decade slowly transitioned into the disco explosion along with the first seeds of new wave music being planted but regardless of how the decade was, I am going to look at a specific year, that year being 1974 mostly because there are songs from the year that I genuinely love and I want to talk about.

1974 was year where the Australian music scene was on the verge of change after concerns were raised that Australian artists were struggling on the charts in face of competition from overseas acts which meant by 1973, the proportion of Australian acts hitting the singles chart was at an all time low, the music of the year tended toward funk, soul, pop, country and a small amount of rock hitting the chart.

However, if you dig a bit deeper than you’ll know that many music critics consider 1974 to be a bad year for popular music pretty much because the big names had disappeared with Elvis Presley quiet, The Beatles having broken up in 1970 with only Ringo Starr really an active presence on the charts that year (he won’t be making this list) and ABBA had only begun their overwhelming period of success however unlike ABBA, many acts who saw success in 1974 would not repeat their success in later years so yeah, I am not going to say the critics are wrong because I really did have trouble put this list together because avoiding the bad cliched song writing that felt out of step with the time even allowing for it being the 70s, the schmaltzy cloying garbage that was only slowly going away or the feeling that the song was just pure novelty junk was difficult however I did manage to find ten songs that showed genuine quality or like I said previously I genuinely love.

Let’s go over the rules before we start though: in order to make this list, the songs had to make the Kent Music Report year end list for 1974, also if they made the year end chart for 1973 but are  higher on the 1974 year end list than they are also eligible so now we’ve got that straight, let’s go…

May as well start off with the biggest hit song of the year, it’s one of several glam rock songs to make this list and honestly in a stronger year I am not sure that this would have made it but given we are dealing with 1974…

10. “My Coo Ca Choo” by Alvin Stardust
Yeah, we’re starting the list with the biggest song of the year having spent seven weeks at number one on the Australian singles chart and honestly while I do like it, in a stronger year, it would have likely missed the list altogether but given the common theme to this list is songs that step outside the mold for 1974, “My Coo Ca Choo” does a lot right, I love that its this catchy with that guitar and Pete Shelley aka ‘Alvin Stardust’ really is kind of pushing an Elvis Presley impression in the vocals made all the more blatant by the haircut.
“My Coo Ca Choo” is a throwback in many ways and I get why the song was so ridiculously huge here. Alvin Stardust would go on to have further success in the UK in 1974 with “Jealous Mind” going number one. Glad I could give this song a little recognition even if as I said I am not really a massive fan of it
This is one of those songs I like but don’t love and in a better year, it probably wouldn’t make the list however the artist behind this song was the best-selling performer in the USA in 1974 and with songs like this one, it’s not hard to understand why.

9. ‘Annie’s Song” by John Denver.
This folk-rock, country song is one of those songs that nobody should be surprised made my year end best list, it’s just a heartfelt sweet song that was written in a ski lift by Denver during a trip by Denver and his wife to Aspen in Colorado in 1973, Denver was inspired to write the song after physical exhilaration of skiing a tough ski run and immersing himself in the colours and sounds around him that day.
For a song that was written in ten and a half minutes, you can barely tell because its just vivid and Denver is singing from a place of sincerity, you can absolutely tell he was in love at the time and that guitar is just gorgeous, it doesn’t get the praise that a song like “Country Roads (Take Me Home)” gets.
Sadly, Denver would die in a light plane crash in California in 1997 but yeah there’s a reason AllMusic labelled Denver as “one of the most beloved entertainers of his era” because of songs like “Annie’s Song”. Terrific song.

Sticking with country, lets go to a mostly ignored Glen Campbell gem…

8. “Bonaparte’s Retreat” by Glen Campbell.
If there’s a song in Glenn Campbell’s discography that doesn’t quite get the attention that a song like “Rhinestone Cowboy” (would be a hit a year later) however the song itself was originally just a melody that purely existed as various fiddle tunes dating back as far as the 1800s however it would be an American country artist Pee Wee King who would record a modified version of the song in 1950 adding in lyrics with the title being a reference to Napoleon Bonaparte’s retreat from Russia that ultimately ended in disaster in 1812.
Anyway enough about the history of the song which is interesting and onto the song itself and I think the reason why this works so well for me is Glenn Campbell’s vocal delivery as he sings the story of meeting and falling in love with this girl telling her of her many charms and then kissing her while “Napoleon’s Bonaparte” played in the background which I admit is probably why the song could be viewed as kind of bad but honestly I find it to be weirdly endearing.
Glenn Campbell would go onto much greater success in the 70s with his biggest hit coming in 1975 with “Rhinestone Cowboy” and is considered a legend in the American country scene.

So in 1974, Australian music was doing it tough on the charts, oh sure there were plenty doing well on the charts with Stevie Wright, Olivia Newton-John and Grahame Bond were among the Aussie artists to reach the top but the concern about the state of Australian music was so high that ABC and Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum would create Countdown and give Australian bands like this one a platform to promote songs like this…

7. “Slipstream” by Sherbet
1974 saw Sherbert led by Daryl Braithwaite emerge onto the Australian scene and they would end up having a presence on the year end charts with their biggest being “Silvery Moon” which was a top 5 hit while “Slipstream” would also end up hitting the top five and is the better of the two songs even thought I nearly overlooked this song until I heard it on the radio and realized how much I actually do like it.
I love how the song sounds so different to anything else that was on the chart at the time and Darryl Braithwaite is really providing and adding to the energy of the song with its build into the verse before dropping dramatically for the bridge with that build into the chorus being great.
“Slipstream” is about losing your way, finding some room and getting back onto the path and finding your way again, the kind of sentiment perfect for not just back in 1974 but now given how things are right now.
Sherbet would go on to experience further success in the years that followed with “Howzat” being huge in 1976 and becoming an Australian music staple.

So there’s one artist who will be appearing twice on this list and because I want to talk more about this artist later on the list I am going to endeavour to keep this short but if you are looking for who might have inspired Joan Jett and others than look no further…

6. “48 Crash” by Suzi Quatro
In order to talk about the influence of female rockers many trace back to Joan Jett but I think most forget that Suzi Quatro was creating waves in the rock scene in the 1970s and doing it brilliantly, I don’t quite love “48 Crash” as much as a Suzi Quatro song later on the list but “48 Crash” still does a LOT right, I love the guitars and the build into the song and holy hell, is Suzi selling the song convincingly, she throws herself into the song hard and the guitars sound absolutely phenomenal that it actually makes me nostalgic for guitar led pop-rock from women on the charts again.
The song was allegedly created through a challenge where the song writers were asked to write a song about absolutely anything hence a challenge to write a song about the economic crash of the United States in 1848…
Yeah…a bit like if Avril Lavigne was asked to write a song about the 1987 Wall Street crash. It’s still a great song regardless mostly due to the shredding guitars and Suzi’s vocals.

Again, this is a song I like but don’t love but it would wrong of me not to acknowledge that this song is ridiculously iconic and by now you should all know what it is, hey Evie, LET YOUR HAIR HANG DOWN!.

5. “Evie” by Stevie Wright
By 1973, Stevie Wright’s former band The Easybeats had gone their separate ways and it left former frontman Stevie Wright doing it tough and suffering from a drug addiction so given Wright was an absolutely brilliant performer, master songwriters George Vanda and Harry Young decided to see what they could come up with, in the end three part song “Evie” and Wright’s album “Hard Road” was as result of the hard work put in by Wright, Vanda and Young. “Evie would be released in April 1974
The song “Evie” though is a masterpiece, a rocking three part song that gave Wright the ability to exert his charisma and personality and show off the brilliant craft and song writing of Vanda and Young. The parts to the song comprised the raucous part 1 where Wright is urging Evie to let her hair hang down and Wright is just full of swagger while the second part sees Wright hit more of an emotional note as he and Evie are finally together and Wright acknowledges he would struggle without her and finally the tragic third part which is a strangely disco esque rock song that sees Wright deal with Evie’s death during childbirth, it’s a total emotional rollercoaster of a song.
There is a reason this song was considered the first eleven minute song to hit the top of the Australian charts at the top and is considered an Australian classic to this day!
Let’s stay with rock but go to the United Kingdom home to a certain British glam rock act that would have an impact on the charts in 1974 with this…

4. “The Ballroom Blitz” by The Sweet
This should hold no surprises for anyone that this song is on this list especially as this song has this incredible catchiness to it that makes it a lot of fun to jump around or even just groove too with its sharp guitars and drums and be one of the many hit songs that songwriter Mike Chapman would either write or co-write, in the case of “The Ballroom Blitz”, he co-wrote it with fellow songwriter and record producer Nicky Chinn.
The song was inspired by an incident at the Grand Hall in the Scottish town of Kilmarnock where they were driven off stage by people throwing things at the band which of course sparked the lyrics in the chorus. I just love the drums that do not let up and the guitars and even though it took a while to convince me, what tips this song over the edge into being great is that bridge into the hook…that over the top ridiculous hook with the vocals that never get annoying but bring the song out of its shell after the delivery of the verse allowing for that chorus to really explode.
In a sea of schmaltz and novelty that was 1974, this was all levels of wonderful, The Sweet saw both “Peppermint Twist” and “Teenage Rampage” also hit the Australian year end list and in 1975 top the year end chart with “Fox on the Run” which would wind up their biggest hit but I think I’ll always prefer the slightly ridiculous and over the top nature of “The Ballroom Blitz”

By now, you’ve probably noticed that a certain Swedish group who first made their appearance on the charts in 1974 with a song widely considered a classic has been absent from this list so far…well it’s not like I disagree here…

3. “Waterloo” by ABBA
In a decade where songs that won the Eurovision Song Contest would still be a huge on the charts even though it would take another nine years before the contest would be televised into Australia on relatively new station at the time, SBS. Swedish band ABBA comprising of Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Anni-Frid headed to the 1974 contest hosted by the English town of Brighton with what was soon to be a massive global smash hit in the making, “Waterloo” was originally under the title of ‘Honey Pie” and features rock and jazz elements with production and recording style influenced by Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound”;
“Waterloo” is about a woman who surrenders to a gentleman giving him promises that she’ll love him forever and much like other songs on this list, it strayed away from what might have been seen as conventional on the charts and even for Eurovision with eye catching costumes and even dance moves, ABBA even sung the song in English rather than in their native Swedish (in those days, singers sung in their native tongue) at the contest right up to 1973)
“Waterloo” is one of the most perfect pop songs that would come out of the 70s and at a time when pop music needed to rid itself of the schmaltzy hold it was in, this could not have come at a better time. ABBA would go on to have six number one hits in Australia and have a lot of success around the world while that year’s Eurovision Song Contest would also see Australia’s own Olivia Newton John compete for the United Kingdom with “Long Live Love” (a rather cheesy ballad) reaching a peak of 11 on the weekly charts and hitting 87 on the year end chart but in ABBA’s “Waterloo”, we got a pop classic that I love right to this day

What do the movie Wizard of Oz and Elton have in common? Well Dorothy and co followed it only to find what they already had while Elton sings about wanting a simpler life and hence in 1974, we got…
2. “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” by Elton John
It’s taken me awhile to truly like Elton John’s music, I think I let many of the stories around Elton’s behaviour cloud my view of his music which I admit was wrong and so one Saturday afternoon during a 2015 summer I sat down and spent some time listening to Elton’s music casting aside some of the personal biases I had and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” was one of the Elton John songs that I fell in love with and it’s themes were something that got me immediately.
The song follows the same theme as the film The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy and her friends (a collection of misfits) are told to follow yellow brick road that led to Emerald City in the land of Oz in to find the all-knowing Wizard  and get the answers they seek before realizing they already had what they were needing and wanting in the first place..
The same idea is true in John’s song “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” where he realizes he is deeply unhappy living what he originally thought was living a good life after coming to the realization that he was being treated like crap by his rich lover, this makes him yearn in the lyrics for a time when life was simpler a yearning that is so god damn true today (honestly there are days where I wonder if being so damn connected to everything and everyone is actually worth it).
Elton John continued his success through the rest of the 70s into the 80s and he even scored a couple of hits in the 90s but there’s a reason that many critics consider this song to be one of Elton’s best in his discography…check it out.

Now before we get to number one, how about a couple of honourable mentions?
-          “Farewell Aunty Jack” by Grahame Bond (Ahh yes, the song from an ABC TV show called Aunty Jack”, this song was the second biggest Australian song of the year and you know what? I find this oddly appealing and charming, if I didn’t, I am pretty sure Aunty Jack would rip my bloody arms off!)

-          “Sorrow” by David Bowie (I can imagine the rage that this song didn’t make the list proper however while I respect Bowie and his impact on the music scene in the 70s and 80s in particular, I just have struggled to like much of his music but “Sorrow” is still a good song)

-          “You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me” by The New Seekers (Okay, this might well be the only relatively schmaltzy song to make the list. The harmonies and catchy hook do things for me)

-          “The Joker” by Steve Miller Band (I’ve never really cared for this song, but I can appreciate it’s not a bad song)

-          - “Hooked on A Feeling” by Blue Swede (Consider this my number eleven, this was the last song I cut before I started making this list. I like this more than Boston’s version a couple of years later, always found that version a bit awful on the production side of things)


Now we come to the number one spot. Remember what I said about there being more Suzi Quatro on this list, well we have reached that point and to nobody’s surprise…

1.       “Devil Gate Drive” by Suzi Quatro
Another hit composed by the duo of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapmann and it would end up giving American rocker Suzi Quatro a number hit in Australia in 1974, the song was originally a B-side for Quatro’s minor hit “Can the Can”.
Unlike,, a lot of modern songs or even other songs of the time in 1974 where the artists sound like nobody is having any fun, Quatro sounds like she is having an absolute ball singing about this fictional place called ‘Devil Gate Drive’ where teenagers go to have fun when their parents say they are not allowed to go out and yeah, the song makes me wish I was fifteen or sixteen and sneaking out to go to this magical place called “Devil Gate Drive”
Add the guitars, the backing vocals which add another layer of catchiness to the hook and you have a song that is just drenched with appeal. I consider Quatro be the one who started the women in rock scene and with songs like “Devil Gate Drive” and “48 Crash”, thank goodness she did.
“Devil Gate Drive” by Suzi Quatro is the number one best hit song of 1974.

ARIA Top Ten Singles/ Chart Review: 18th May. Ariana and Justin Stuck With Number 3 | Announcement at end.

So this week is busy and there's a looming threat to our number one that we need to discuss so let's get right to our top ten where "Roses" by Saint JHN maintains it's hold on number one for a sixth, it still has decent sales and solid streaming even if it has somewhat lost it's hold on streaming which makes it's position at the top a little less comfortable than what it should be.

That threat doesn't come from "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd which remains at number two, those sales aren't going to keep up forever to support the diminishing streaming so really it will be a surprise to see this song return to number one.

We have a new entry at number three and it's not a surprise either with "Stuck With U" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber being the highest debut of the week (not the worst of the debuts which is saying something), it really wasn't a shot at number one because while it had sales for the majority of the week, streaming let it down big time, it's not close to "Roses" or the current streaming leader.

Which brings us to "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch which, on the back of taking the streaming lead, went up five places to number four, the only thing from propelling it to number one is weaker sales but if it gets sales on board...watch this song hit number one.

Not the case for 'Say So' by Doja Cat which remained at number five, I honestly don't see this song getting much higher now with sales slipping and streaming only just hanging on and the same could be said for 'Toosie Slide" by Drake which fell three to number six, it's never had sales and streaming is starting to bleed so this could be gone sooner rather than later.

"Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion slipped three places to seven after the hype of the Beyonce remix faded away. Sales are still okay and while streaming could be better, it's a bit of a wait and see with this one.

"Death Bed" by Powfu feat. Beabadoobee fell two places to number eight as sales finally dropped off. Streaming is bleeding at a much slower rate but I expect stiffer competition will see this song gone from the top ten soon. 

'"Supalonely" by BENEE feat Gus Dapperton rebounded back into the top ten at number nine mostly because of sales and streaming not letting this one go just yet...sigh.

Finally Dua Lipa's 'Don't Start Now" fell two places to number ten as it's on it way out naturally.

Gains

Not much in the way of massive gains this week. "ILY" by Surf Mesa and Emilee continues its bemusing popularity up from 32 to 25 this week. I already mentioned "Rockstar" by DaBaby and Roddy Ricch going up to number 4. 

Losers

A little sad to see the biggest loser this week was "Righteous" by Juice WRLD which dropped eleven places to 30 this week. The song is good, would have been nice to see it stick around a bit longer even if it's definitely a hard song to listen to. 

"The Scotts" by The Scotts fell out of the top ten down five places to number 12 while "City of Angels" by 24kGolden also fell hard down six places to 50.

Drop Outs

Not all that said about the drop outs here with "Never seen the Rain" by Tones and I the only one I am slightly disappointed to see gone but it had at good run on the charts. 

The others gone are "Scko Mode" by Travis Scott and Drake, "Highest in the Room" by Travis Scott, "Gozilla" by Eminem feat. Juice WRLD  and "Maniac" by Conan Gray.

New Entries

So I've already talked about "Stuck with U" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber debuting at number 3 but there were four other debuts this week and frankly not many of them are good.

At number 14 this week is the return of the Souncloud Waifu otherwise known as 6ix9ine with "Gooba, this is going to be a contender for worst hit song of the year, once you get beyond the stupid shouting that just reminds you he is a talentless hack, there's not much to this song at all.

OneFour team up with A$AP Ferg for "Say It Again" which enters at 34 while the absolutely awful "After Party" by Don Toliver is in at 46.

Finally the best of the new entries is in at 49 courtesy of Topic who has teamed up with A7S for "Breaking Me". I really kind of like this, it's a hit in parts of Europe so I am glad to see it finally hit the Australian charts.

Next week is likely going to see Katy Perry show up along with maybe Kygo's collab with OneRepublic and possibly Delta Goodrem. The race for number one might be starting to heat up so we'll have to see when the chart updates on Saturday at 5pm/

2000 Sound: 14th May. Ayyy ROCK ON!!!!

Let's not waste any time this week and get stuck into it beginning with the top ten where Destiny's Child spend a second week at number one with "Say My Name" and really it looks a pretty dominant number one right now.

It's closest competition is coming from "Never Be The Same Again" by Mel C and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes which rose one place to number two, this song's radio presence is quite something else which is odd because the radio won't touch Spice Girls but anyway this song pushed "Poison" by Bardot down to number three as the hype continues to fade.

Sash! saw "Adelante" move up one place to number four as sales remain consistent, I don't think it's a player for number one but this song is more than holding it's own although it could be more that "Bye Bye Bye" by NSYNC started to weaken and fell one place to number five.

"Don't Give Up" by Chicane feat. Bryan Adams rose two places to number six because somehow people want an empowerment anthem.

Another week, another new entry in the top ten, this time from Pearl Jam with "Nothing As It Seems" riding solid sales to debut at number seven, it won't last in the top ten though.

Naughty by Nature climbed one place to number eight for their "Holiday" while Leah Haywood is back in the top ten at number nine having rose two places this week with "We Think It's Love".

Finally not quite proving my point back number seven, we have Toni Braxton's "He Wasn't Man Enough" which fell four places to number ten.


Gains

Lonestar's "Amazed" got a massive jump this week rising 14 places to 26 somehow mainly due to it being easy listening wedding fodder.

Macy Gray's completely unmemorable "Still" climbed five places to 21 while "Crash and Burn" by Savage Garden rose from 22 to 15...

Re-Entries

Speaking of Savage Garden, "Affirmaton" is back at 50...

Losers

Not much in this category here except that "American Pie" by Madonna dropped seven to 40 thank goodness while "Pray" by Tina Cousins dropped from 23 to 32 this week and "Generator" by Foo Fighters also lost power down to 38.

"Candy" by Mandy Moore fell out of he top ten to hit 13.

New Entries

I've already mentioned Pearl Jam in the top ten but it's not the last of the rock leaning songs new this week because at number 28 is "Bent" by Matchbox Twenty, this song is doing big things in the US, looks set to be a hit here while Aussie rockers Oblivia hit the chart at 36 with "My Friend"

Steering back toward pop, in at number 37 is M2M's ballad "Mirror Mirror" - a song that plays on the Snow White tropes a fair bit, not sure this is going to be the hit they are after, speaking of pop ballads, Chtistina Aguilera is back with "I Turn to You" at number 42.

Finally Ilanda team up with Jackie for "Breakin' There's no Stoppin' Us" which debuts at 43

ARIA Singles Chart top ten/Chart Review: 11th May. Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce's 'Savage" chart move

So this week was pleasing to a certain aspect as there was no Drake album bomb within the top 50 and what we got was a middling week with a couple of enormous moves that I will get to but first place where we saw bit of movement was in the top ten just not right at the top where "Roses (Imanbeck Remix) remained at number one for another week mostly due to streaming and solid sales hut will face a challenge next week when Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber's collaboration enters the chart next week likely very high.

"Roses held up over "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd which remained at number two for another week, it's slowly bleeding on sales and streaming but its still got a fair margin to it's opposition which brings us to "Toosie Slide" at number three.which really only has streaming at this point and that is starting to show signs of wavering against stronger opposition...good.

The big story is with our number four that being "Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion which rose sixteen places due to the remix with Beyonce (which ARIA haven't credited this week). It's Megan Thee Stallion's first top ten hit in Australia.

Up three places also courtesy of a remix is "Say So" by Doja Cat. This song got a remix with Nicki Minaj (it's nowhere near as good as the remix of "Savage"). I can see this falling back hard in the weeks ahead.

All of this pushed "Death Bed" by Powfu feat. Beabadoobee down one place to number six, it's just not quite got the streaming or sales to really compete with the top five right now.

"The Scotts" by The Scotts slipped three places to number seven because it's underwhelming at best while Dua Lipa's "Don't Start Now" slipped two places to number eight as streaming and sales have evaporated for this song.

Rising five places into the top ten is "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch at number nine thanks to streaming, this is DaBaby's first top ten hit in Australia and Roddy Rccch's second.

Most pleasingly the frantic movement has seen "Intentions" by Justin Bieber feat. Quavo fall back three places to number ten. Good.

Gains

So the only major gains outside of "Savage" by Megan the Stallion rising to number four were for "ILY" by Surf Mesa feat. Emilee which somehow jumped ten places to 32 and "Rover" by S1mba feat. DTG which got a big boost to 34 (not sure how long either song will stick around though, both seem to benefiting from internet virality.

Re-Entries

We got one re-entry this week from Noah Cyrus with "July" at 47, this song has been bouncing on and off the chart for awhile now so I don't expect it to stick around

Losers

The biggest loser this week is "Maniac" by Conan Gray which fell eleven spots to 48 this week (thank god it really didn't become a massive hit)

Unsurprisingly Travis Scott's "Highest In the Room" took a hit as it fell six places to 46 and "Sicko Mode" with Drake dropped seven places to 38 while Tones and I's "Never Seen the Rain" plunged from 41 to 49 (Yeah I like it but it's time for this to exit already)

"The Box" by Roddy Rich hit 26 down from 19 last week while "I'm Ready" by Sam Smith feat. Demi Lovato continues to be a non starter at 39.

Drop Outs

Neither drop out is all that surprising with "Goosebumps" by Travis Scott feat Kendrick Lamar and "Glitter" by BENEE both gone this week. Bit of a shame because would have liked to have seen "Goosebumps" become a hit in 2020.

New Entries

There's only just the one new entry to speak of this week and that is at number sixteen with "Be Kind" by Marshmello and Halsey, the song is actually surprisingly good and well worth checking out.

So that wraps up this week, expecting the debuts of the collab by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber plus that new unfortunate song by 6ix9ine when the chart updates on Saturday at 5pm.

Top Ten Best Hit Songs of the 2010s

The 2010s…a decade where music became more disposable or really only good for the 30 second meme that might get virality on Vine or now TikTok which is becoming the new Vine, streaming has effectively replaced downloads and CDs as the way the majority of people around the world are listening to music while the popstars of the 2000s took a backseat to rappers and the new wave of popstars with the biggest names this decade including Adele, Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Drake and Bruno Mars.

Regardless of all that though, how was the music? Honestly, I think its ridiculous to compare decades as each decade has equal amounts of good and bad years eg: I have been looking at the music of the 70s and I am finding just as much crap from that I think people forget hence they like to romanticise about the 70s being better than the 2010s when there’s an argument that that is not the case at all however I am getting carried away, it’s time to talk about the ten songs that I loved the most over this 2010s

Believe me, creating this list wasn’t easy, it was agony cutting songs that just missed out but this is best of the best from the 2010s so for as much as I loved the gorgeously constructed “Someone Like You” by Adele, the amazing “Somebody that I Used to Know” by Gotye and Kimbra and the cathartic “Hymn for the Weekend” by Coldplay, they won’t be making this list.
The songs all had to chart on the ARIA year end singles chart of their respective year and keep in mind this is just my opinion, music is subjective so feel free to share your top ten favourite hit songs of the decade just gone in the comments and some of these picks may not reflect the year end top ten lists that I published especially for one year in particular.

Now all that is out of the way, let us get this show on the road starting with a song that was my favourite hit song of last year and still packs a smooth punch in 2020.

10. “Dancing With A Stranger” by Sam Smith and Normani
I have no regrets about putting this here, this song just connects for me with its slinky cool smoothness with R&B vibes that are tailor made to suit both the voices of Sam Smith and Normani. A song about not wanting to be lonely in the wake of a relationship falling apart so trying to find some semblance of solace with a stranger amidst the hope that the other person returns and the instrumentation really does highlight the loneliness.

Sam Smith vocally sounds so better on this too not using the range where they tend to sound more willowy and it works with Normani so effectively, the lower range works with spare guitar and the other elements so well, its almost breathtaking.

This guy is going to be appearing on my list twice, he is the only one set to appear twice and its for good reason…

9. “Lego House” by Ed Sheeran

It took me awhile to appreciate Ed Sheeran’s 2012 smash hit, it took hearing this on the radio in 2014 for me to truly appreciate just how resonant “Lego House” is for me and that gentle acoustic guitar along with the piano, it’s sheer divinity to the ears. The subject matter of the song though is dark as Sheeran sings about the struggle of trying to fix a relationship that seems hopelessly lost or at the point of just falling apart altogether but Sheeran still cares enough about this girl to want to stop her from getting hurt by him, he knows things in the relationship aren’t working and wants to ease her pain even if he knows he will suffer himself.

What sells this song is the sincerity and emotion in the voice of Ed Sheeran on the song, you can almost feel his heart breaking on the track. So glad Australia made “Lego House” the hit it deserved to be,

There are three songs on this list that weren’t hits in the USA, “Lego House” was one, this is the second of those and considering the fact that after her breakout success in 2013/14 over the USA the fact this song wasn’t a hit there surprised me which is why I am so happy I can put it on this list.

8. “Green Light” by Lorde

Unlike “Lego House” where Ed Sheeran is trying to let down a partner easy, Lorde is upset and trying to deal with her own heartbreak by seeking the moment her own heart will allow her to move forward and on with her life after the end of the relationship but not without taking a few pointed shots at the guy who broke her heart referencing kissing on the dancefloor etc and Lorde delivers with a genuine vocal intensity that maybe only Beyonce at her most  savage could match.

What I also love about this song is Jack Antonoff’s production which sees a piano sample that helps to build into one of the most exultant choruses of the 2010s, it’s anthemic without tilting into being corny. If you have not heard Lorde’s 2017 masterpiece album “Melodrama” yet, I highly recommend you do so because much like this song, it is something incredibly special.

This next song was not going to make my top ten, in fact, I had left it out for another song…I went back and re listened and weeeell….

7. “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars.

For a large portion of 2014-15, this song was inescapable and meant that it was under threat of suffering from people getting tired of it but even if I wasn’t initially a fan, I could still appreciate just how incredibly catchy it was as Mark Ronson fused jazz, dance and 70s and 80s tropes together to make a ridiculously memorable melody and beat while Bruno Mars is showing off all his retro cool as he sings about being so pretty he could kiss himself and brags he is smoother than a jar of Skippy peanut butter.

Now normally that kind of bragging from Bruno Mars or anyone else for that matter would irk me but Bruno Mars can carry the attitude and swagger involved with this kind of song plus “Uptown Funk has one hell of a groove that no other song was able to match for the rest of the decade, seems kind of ironic that “Uptown Funk” would be one of the last really fun songs in 2015 before the charts lapsed toward woke pop that was trying far too hard to be relatable and boring hip hop trap that popular music is only now just starting to come out of but for awhile this song brought smiles and fun for so many and we have Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars to thank for that.

I cannot believe I’m doing this; I am not a massive fan of this artist, she can annoy me sometimes, but you know what? When she makes a pop song like this one, you do have to acknowledge it and praise it…yep, there is a Taylor Swift song on this list…

6. “Style” by Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift’s singles choices are usually pretty terrible, I wasn’t a fan of “Shake It Off” (She just couldn’t sell the message convincingly for mine and that cheerleader aspect of the song pissed me off) and “Blank Space” while not as annoying as “Shake It Off, it suffered production issues but “Style” is what happens when Taylor leverages her strengths in writing with that outrageously good melody along with a sound that could have been jacked straight out of the late 70s, early 80s – a sound a lot of artists are going for right now.

“Style” is allegedly about a past romantic relationship Taylor was involved in and regardless of the stories and rumours, the song just works so well beyond all the gossip with that groove courtesy of those synths and a killer guitar riff that will almost always make any pop song good to great at least to me and Taylor sells this so much better than she did on “Shake it Off”.

I look forward to writing about “Cruel Summer” when it hopefully makes the year end for 2020, looking forward to whatever else Taylor has in store.

This next song gets to me a far bit and hearing it performed live by one of the artists involved during Music from the Homefront confirmed that for me, it needed to be here. It’s the last of the three songs not to be a hit in the USA and the only hip hop or hip hop adjacent song to make this list…

5. “Battle Scars” by Guy Sebastian feat Lupe Fiasco

This song brings me to tears every single time I hear it either on the radio or p, a song about over coming personal battles or labels given by other people and inspiring people to confront the challenges they are facing in their lives and yeah Sebastian’s vocal performance is one of his most passionate to date, the kind of soaring range that makes you sit up and pay attention and Lupe is on form here, he isn’t doing the whole phoned in verse on this song, he is giving it 100% and wow, he sounds fantastic as he raps about never really healing from the end of a relationship.

It is a very real and very honest song that dives headfirst into holding up a mirror to itself and questioning whether Sebastian and Lupe have overcome their battles and holding them to account, it’s real and powerful moment when Lupe admits what he is confronting is starting to break him and knowing what that’s like to hit that point, it’s something that does get to me every time. I think I’ll leave it where it is as like I said previously I do have trouble writing about this one.

I am so glad Australia made this a number one hit like it deserved to be worldwide.

Talking about this band so high on this list feels weird, mostly because they are making music now that is nowhere near as good as this song…

4. “Counting Stars” by OneRepublic

Oh man, hearing this song reminds of the potential that OneRepublic had at the time this song came out when Ryan Tedder showed he had some personality and One Republic had this knack for song writing that took the audience with them instead of selling out to car commercials with their most recent releases, look at songs like this one and “Love Runs Out” (a song that was a hit in the USA) but regardless of my thoughts on OneRepublic’s direction in 2020.

“Counting Stars” blends folk pop, pop rock and disco with a groove that is incredibly propulsive especially as the slow build leads to the incredibly propulsive chorus and lyrics that play almost toward themes that sound familiar today with laying in bed at night wondering how on earth they are going to make ends meet and what they are going to do with their lives as individuals and Tedder is just able to take the audience with him on this song, he really is the star of the show here.

Terrific song! I am glad this was a hit around the world, maybe just maybe, OneRepublic will come back to make this kind of pop rock music again one day.

3. “Ghost” by Ella Henderson

Who would have thought a former UK X-Factor contestant would up so high on this list? Well here is the thing, Ella Henderson released a damn good first album called “Chapter 1” with “Ghost” being the first single from the album and what a song it is with its prominent guitar rollick and plenty of momentum that really keeps the song moving with Ella Henderson delivering the song with a passion and conviction.

The subject matter of “Ghost” is that of a relationship that has fallen apart but Henderson knows that while it is absolutely toxic, she’s still in love with this guy and keeps going back to him because hey true love never dies. “Ghost” just a damn great pop song that I think way too many people have forgotten about and while Ella’s return hasn’t quite really bore the fruit this debut did, glad we got this out of it.

So we only have to go back a couple of years to 2017, the year Ed Sheeran just dominated the ARIA charts (also the year I started this blog), he released two songs at the same time at the start of the “Divide” album cycle, one was the biggest hit of the year in “Shape Of You”, the other was this…

2. “Castle on the Hill” by Ed Sheeran

This song never fails to make me tear up somehow with its almost anthemic chorus, that brilliant guitar and the whole song sounding like a U2 song maybe from the Achtung Baby era or something and the fact that ED SHEERAN, the man responsible for boring slog like “Thinking Out Loud” and “Photograph”, could write and release a ROCK leaning song like “Castle on the Hill” in the midst of a time when the world’s charts were full of clunky desaturated pop and hip hop stuck in a murky swirl of trap that mostly wasn’t good so when this got stuck at number two behind “Shape Of You” for a few weeks, I could scarcely believe my eyes, it was almost too good to be true especially as Sheeran wasn’t playing to his hook up side this time.


“Castle on the Hill” sees Sheeran reminiscing about growing up and how everyone he grew up with has handled life, some of those people he knew have since had children and some are just barely making ends meet when he returns home from his tours, it’s clear that Sheeran thinks of these people who he says in the song helped raise him, it’s a song that leaves a lump in my throat.
Heck, “Castle on the Hill” ended up being better than the entirety of the U2 album that was released in that same year.

So here we are at the top spot, I think I have known what my number one best hit of the decade would be for some time, this song to me is just incredible and the only one that I felt was right to put at the top to me…

1.  “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele

I love everything about this song that combines blues, gospel and disco into one incredible song that sees a proper build through the verses and bridge into an explosive chorus and the power of Adele’s voice is just captivity especially as the song just starts with Adele’s vocals and spare guitar building up with drums and a piano before hitting the chorus with Adele just nailing it brilliantly.

It’s claimed the song was written after a relationship breakdown where Adele was told by an ex-boyfriend that her life would be boring and lonely if she didn’t stay with him which is pretty insulting and abusive so this song does feel like the right message to send to that ex by Adele and what a way to do it too!


Billboard chose this song as one of their 100 songs of the decade and you know what? For once they got SOMETHING right as Adele was proving to be a game changer for the music scene still looking for direction post the collapse of the club boom in 2011, “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You” brought soul and blues back into sharp focus on the charts at a time when people were starting to feel the effects of the hangover from all the partying.

“Rolling in the Deep” is the best hit song of the 2010s.

2000 Sound: 7th May. Destiny's Child make you say their name at number one

We have a pretty interesting week on our hands here, plenty of switches everywhere and some new entries with one in the top ten so let's get right to it starting with the top ten and it's probably the right place to start because we do have a change at the top with Destiny's Child have snared their first ARIA singles chart topper with "Say My Name" and it was sheer numbers of sales and momentum that got them to number one, so much so it pushed Bardot's "Poison" down to number two this week as hype fades from Popstars.

Seems like the biggest rival to "Say My Name" might come from "Never Be the Same Again" by Mel C and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes which moved up two places to number three this week, this song also has some serious momentum behind it right now. Radio is loving this song right now, it pushed former chart topper "Bye Bye Bye" by *NSYNC down to number four as it bleeds on sales.

The same goes for "Adelante" by Sash! which slipped to number five this week due to sales just starting to fall off.

Toni Braxton has the week's highest new entry at number six with "He Wasn't Man Enough". There's an open question of whether this will stay in the top ten but its here due to a pretty strong sales week.

Heck, it blew past "Candy" by Mandy Moore which fell to number seven this week as it continues to fall away gracefully.

Chicane's "Don't Give Up" feat. Bryan Adams remains steady at number eight this week while Naughty By Nature make their first appearance inside the top ten with "Holiday" up six places to number nine.

Finally returning to the top ten is "What's a Girl to Do" by Sister2Sister but I don't expect it to stick around.

Gains

A big gain this week for "Mambo Italiano" by Shaft as it rose eleven places 34 this week to become the week's biggest mover on the chart.

Brian McKnight's "Back at One" rose nine places to 39 while Kaylan's "Rock Me All Night" jumped eight places to 25.

Pink's "There You Go" seems to be the song headed for the top ten as it rose five places to 14 wbile "Crash and Burn" does the exact opposite for Savage Garden in rising six places to 22.

Re-Entries

Two re-entries this week with Westlife back at number 35 with their song "Flying without Wings" while Enrique Iglesias is back on the chart at number 36 with "Be With You"

Losers

Oof. It was a busy week on this front but let's start off with the songs that were top ten hits that lost big this week like Killing Heidi's "Live Without It" which plunged 20 places to 38 and the band's chart topping hit "Mascara" run down 14 places to 48, S Club 7's "S Club Party" is headed for a bad hangover as it dropped from 35 to 49 while "American Pie" by Madonna dropped from 25 to 32 this week and Chris Franklin's "Bloke" lost some of its oomph by skidding down seven places to 21.

"All the Small Things" by Blink 182 dropped seven places out of the top ten to 17 but frankly I am stunned it stayed in the top ten for so long.

Tom Jones and Mousse T's "Sex Bomb" continues to fail to detonate as it slid eleven places to 50 and Alice Deejay's "Back in My Life" slipped from 38 to 47.

New Entries

I have already talked about the new entry in the top ten for Toni Braxton with "He Wasn't Man Enough" at number six so we have just two other new entries to mention here with the first of those coming from American rock band Foo Fighters with their new single "Generator" in at 31.

Finally UK boy band A1 hit the chart with "Summertime of Our Lives" at number 44.

ARIA Singles Chart Top Ten: May 4th: Chart readies for another Drakepocalypse

This week was a surprisingly busy one, we got four new arrivals and plenty of movement up and down the chart this week and with Drake and a bunch of other new releases on the horizon that isn't surprising, Let's start with the top ten where "Roses (Imanbeck Remix)"by Saint JHN kep the number one spot for a fourth week and right now it's a margins game because while it is still doing well on sales, it is in a battle with another song for the top spot next week.

That battle is not with "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd because while it's still incredibly strong on sales, streaming isn't so strong right now and it's starting to bleed there,

What is set to challenge for number one is "Toosie Slide" by Drake at number three especially as it's likely the release of his b-sides mixtape called "Dark Lane Demos" was released on Friday which resulted in a surge for this song on streaming along with several other songs but unlike "Roses", the sales for "Toosie Slide" are its weak point.


We have a new entry in at number four with a song called "The Scotts" by The Scotts otherwise known as Travis Scott and Kid Cudi. Now I am not certain this song will stay in the top beyond the next month but none the less strong streaming ensured that it debuted high.

Not going anywhere is "Death Bed" by Powfu and Beabadoobee which remained at number five this week courtesy of consistent sales and streaming that just won't go away.

"Don't Start Now" by Dua Lipa is down two to number six after it started to fall away on sales and it bled hard on streaming, it's secured it's place on the year end list so it will start making it's way out naturally.

Down one place is "Intentions" by Justin Bieber and Quavo mostly because sales fell this week. (They aren't falling away quickly enough, this song is rancid).

"Say So" by Doja Cat remains at number eight but I suspect it will get a boost next week because it got a remix with Nicki Minaj (I have some thoughts on the remix which I will going into on another blog entry)

"Break My Heart" by Dua Lipa dropped two places to number 9 this week as sales and streams weirld fell away, there's no real consistent base for this song right now.

Finally "Supalonely" by BENEE and Gus Dapperton fell one place to round out the top ten at number ten.

Gainers
The biggest gain of the week came for "This City" by Sam Fischer which rose from its debut of 43 last week to hit 22 this week. This is looking like being a hit in the making.

Speaking of songs rising off their debut last week, "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch jumped ten places to 14, this song has traction on streaming so I kind of expect this song to get bigger.

Re-Entries

There is a LOT of Travis Scott this week and we find him again in the returns with "Sicko Mode" feat. Drake back number 31 while "Highest In the Room" is back at 40. Mostly due to to Fortnite, I don't see either making much more impact, they'll be gone next week if Drake has any impact at all.

"Rover" by S1mba and DTG is back at 48.

Losers

Unfortunately the biggest loser of the week was Physical" by Dua Lipa which fell eleven places to 29 this week. It should just make the ARIA year end chart but it's going to be close.

It was a busy week across the board with "City of Angels" by 24k Golden losing its hype and falling ten places to 44 and "I'm Ready" by Sam Smith feat. Demi Lovato slipped nine places to 34 as people realize that it's not good at all.

"In Your Eyes" by The Weeknd continues to really disappoint as it slips to 38 while "Maniac" by Conan Gray drops seven to 37 and "Glitter" by BENEE dropped six places to 50

Top ten hits like "Roxanne" by Arizona Zervas dropped six places to 47 as did "Godzilla" by Eminem feat. Juice WRLD which hit 49.

What was surprising were the sudden six place falls for "What's Poppin'" by Jack Harlow to 27 and "Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion to 20 although in the case of the latter, it might get a rebound next week given it's got a remix with Beyonce, I hope it does, the song is great!

Also the same can be said for "Blueberry Faygo" by Lil Mosey which fell from 17 ro 21...this was looking like being a hit a few short weeks ago...what happened?

Drop outs

So we have a busy week of drop outs from the top 50 with the only one I am disappointed to see gone is "To Die for" by Sam Smith however it is taking "Life is Good" by Future and Drake, "What a Man Gotta do" by the Jonas Brothers and "Post Malone" by Sam Feldt featuring Rani so that's really a win.

Other songs to go that really weren't hits are "Purple Hat" by Sofi Tukker, "Believe It" by PartyNextDoor feat. Rihanna (serves him right for wasting Rihanna) and "July" by Noah Cyrus.

New Entries

So I have already talked about "The Scotts" by The Scotts at number four but Travis Scott also has his 2017 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Goosebumps" with Kendrick in at 45 which is fine because "Goosebumps" is pretty solid.

Outside of Travis Scott songs either new or returning, the late Juice WRLD's new single "Righteous" is in at 15, I have some thoughts on that song too which I think need a forum better than a chart review to explain.

Finally an interpolation of Frank Sinatra's "I Love You Baby" has hit the chart through Surf Mesa's "ILY" feat. Emilee at number 42 because bastardising Frank Sinatra during lockdown is fucking normal.

So that wraps up what was a surprisingly busy week dominated by Travis Scott...next week as I mentioned...the likely Drakepocalypse along with new entries from a collab by Marshmello and Halsey, Hilltop Hoods and maybe even Luke Combs!
