Australian top ten and new entries this week: Edopoly intensifies

You may remember I coined a new term for Ed Sheeran’s dominance at the top of the ARIA charts last week, well, the Edopoly continues this week but more of that in a moment as we have two new entries to the top 10 to get through along with several new entries littered throughout the top 50.

As expected both “Fresh Eyes” by Andy Grammer and former ARIA chart topper “Rockabye” by Clean Bandit featuring Sean Paul and Anne-Marie (Look out for Anne Marie’s new single called “Ciao Adios”) dropping out of the top 10.

We could also be saying goodbye to Amy Shark’s wonderful song “Adore” from the top 10 next week, it dropped two places to number 10.

At number 9 is a collaboration between Kygo and Selena Gomez entitled “It Ain’t Me”. Expect to see that song gain some real momentum in the weeks ahead. It’s actually a decent song, check it out.

Pnau’s “Chameleon” drops two places to number 8 (Let’s forget I ever suggested that I thought it was chance of knocking Ed Sheeran off number 1 on Twitter).

The Chainsmokers have teamed up with Coldplay for a new single that will hit the ARIA chart next week as “Paris” drops two places to number 7.

Shocker of the week is the two place drop for “Chained to the Rhythm” by Katy Perry, it somehow has suffered a bit of a loss of momentum after debuting at number 4 last week. I am sure Katy cats will want to rectify that in the upcoming week.

Number 5 is the surprise with Julia Michael’s song “Issues” climbing into the top 5. Suspect on the back of good streaming. This song is a huge hit on Spotify right now.

Think Zayn and Taylor Swift’s chances of reaching number 1 have come to an end with “I don’t want to live forever” suffering a stumble to 4 from 3 last week.

At number 3 where it’s the first Ed Sheeran song. “Castle on the Hill” which took a one place drop to number 3. For mine, “Castle on the Hill” is the best of the three tracks that Sheeran has released from “Divide” so far.

It’s not all bad news for Sheeran because replacing “Castle on the Hill at number 2 is Sheeran himself with “How Would you Feel (Paean)”

Meanwhile Sheeran’s “Shape of You” continues to dominate the chart, number one for a seventh consecutive week. I see no signs of this Edopoly ending just yet with his third album “Divide” due to be released on Friday. Shape of You has a huge margin on Spotify at the top of the charts there and right now, it will take a song with serious momentum and sales behind it to knock “Shape of You” off the top spot.

Now for the new entries, I’ve already mentioned the two new entries inside the top 10 that being Sheeran’s “How would you feel (Paean)” at 2 and “It Ain’t Me” by Kygo featuring Selena Gomez at 9 so we go to number 32 where we find Maroon 5’s new single called “Cold” which is a collaboration with rapper Future and I have to be honest I am a bit cold on this song but hey, it will probably end up doing rather well.

Right behind “Cold” is the new one for rockers Linkin Park featuring Kiiara called “Heavy” at 33. Now when I think Linkin Park, I think big rock vocals, guitars and drums and songs like “In the End” and “Numb” but let me tell you I was shocked when I heard “Heavy” because it sounds nothing like what Linkin Park have done before and in some senses not in a good way.

At number 41 is the new single for Lana Del Ray entitled “Love”. I got to be honest here, I struggle to see the appeal of Del Ray’s music but good luck to those that enjoy it, “Love” is another rather floaty ambient song of Del Ray’s.

The last of the new entries is the latest single from Bruno Mars “24k Magic” album called “That’s What I Like”, it is probably my favourite of the new entries this week. Retro pop with Mars sounding like he has taken some inspiration from “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar in parts

Next week, Ed Sheeran will probably keep number 1 as his new album breaks all kinds of records. Can Katy Perry regain lost momentum to even get close to Sheeran? Will Kygo and Selena shape as a contender to knock Ed off number 1. All these questions and more to be answered next week. Expect new entries from The Chainsmokers featuring Coldplay, Zedd featuring Alessia Cara and Meghan Trainor amongst others.

See you all then

2017 Music Odyssey Blog #1: Blasts from the past and newer artists

I decided that 2017 would be the year that I look beyond the Australian top 40 and even sometimes the top 40 charts around the world especially as last year to me wasn't a great year for music (it wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't good either) and this week kind of led me to the British rock scene and also a few blasts from the past that I thought I might share with you.

"The Devil's in the Details" by Jennifer Paige"

You might remember Jennifer Paige as being the woman behind the Australian number 1 hit "Crush" back in 1998, well as it turns out she is back with a new single called "The Devil's in the details" and its not that bad a song).

"Delicious" by Daniel Powter

Another blast from the past here but Daniel Powter is having big success in Hungary with a song that while maybe not as a good as "Bad Day" but it's certainly catchy and some say reminiscent of Scissor Sisters "I don't Feel like dancing"

"Lost on You" by LP.

American singer Laura Pergolizzi has been having plenty of success around Europe, went number 2 in Spain and is currently in the top 10 in several countries. This is a stunning song which is unsurprising considering she's written for artists like Cher, Backstreet Boys and Christina Aguilera!.

"Call Back Home" by Kyle Lionhart

Kyle Lionhart is Australian neo folk/folk/soul artist from Byron Bay in NSW and quite honestly "Call Back Home" is a beautiful track. If you like "Call Back Home" you can check out two other songs on Lionhart's Triple J Unearthed page.

"She Wants Me" by Louis Berry

Much like other newer artists, I came across Louis Berry while listening to BBC Radio 1 and it was the song "Restless" but somehow I am convinced that he has gone one step better with "She Wants me" which is a real energetic song.

"Black Magic" by The Amazons

The Amazons are a Britsh rock band that I have raved about on Twitter since I heard "Little Something" via BBC Radio 1 (I think even Triple J has given The Amazons music a bit of air time), the boys are back with a killer song that features the return of the guitar riff. This has to be a hit in Australia. Please check this song out.

This week's Australian top 10: It's an Edopoly at the top!

Hello music fans, welcome to Australian Chart Attack (a boring name with no creativity, I know), a look at the Australian singles chart on a weekly basis, look at some of the music likely headed to the charts and basically about my 2017 music odyessy

Anyway let's look this week's chart and it was a fairly stable week with only one new entry and that new entry breaking into the top 10 but we'll get to that shortly so let's get stuck into this week's top 10 and at number 10 a song I really do like from Andy Grammer, the song is "Fresh Eyes" but looks like its on its way out of the top 10 having dropped a place from 9 last week.

At number 9 is former number 1 "Rockabye" by Clean Bandits, Sean Paul and Anne-Marie. Suspect this song might slip out of the top ten next with some strong new entries expected from Ed Sheeran and others.

Number 8 is Amy Shark with "Adore", disappointingly its slipped 5 spots from its peak of number 3. Its a fantastic song!. Check out Amy's others songs "Spits on Girls" and "Golden Fleeces" as well.

Julia Michaels remains at number 7 with "Issues", "Chameleon remains at number 6 for Pnau. "Paris" also doesn't move from 5 for The Chainsmokers

The lone new entry this week is Katy Perry's new single "Chained to the Rhythm" from her forthcoming fourth album which has enterred the singles chart at number 4 and could very well be a chance at number 1 in the coming weeks.

Zayn and Taylor Swift jump one spot to number 3 but can't break the Edopoly at the very top with "I don't want to live forever"

Ed Sheeran is spending his sixth week at number 2 with "Castle on the Hill" and his sixth week at number 1 with "Shape of You".

Sheeran could very well have 3 songs inside the top 10 after releasing "How would you feel (Paean)" last Friday. Quite remarkable.
