ARIA Singles Chart top ten/Chart Review: 23rd July, Drake takes number 1 for the third time this year

It was coming, we all knew it was headed toward this that a social media challenge would spiral to viral status and result in what is commonly known as normal transmission in 2018...

By normal transmission, I mean Drake at number one. "In My Feelings" rode enormous sales and streaming to rise from number 3 to take the number one spot to make Drake's THIRD Australian number one this year following likely year end number one "God's Plan" (11 weeks) and "Nice for What?" (2 weeks) meaning Drake has now spent almost double the amount of time at number one of this week's number two single.

That number two is the previous number one for eight weeks 'Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer which was never going to match the virality of the current "In My Feelings" challenge craze, it's showing signs that it could be vulnerable to a stronger challenger.

However that challenger isn't going to be "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5 feat. Cardi B, Drake pushed this song back and it's also showing signs of weakness as well so I would expect to see this begin a slow descent out of the top ten.

Dean Lewis is the second Australian act within the top ten as "Be Alright" rose 1 place to number 4 on the back of some pretty strong sales and doing okay on streaming. If that continues, it could potentially go number 2 or 3 next week if that keeps up.

Our highest debut this week is at number 5 with Ariana Grande's second official single from "Sweetener" entitled "God is a Woman". Now while I am not convinced the song is all that god , it was a pretty strong player on streaming and if sales pick up as well than it could well also take advantage of the weaknesses of "Youngblood" and "Girls Like You"

What won't be taking advantage is "Better Now" by Post Malone which really only stayed where it is because nothing behind it was able to make the jump past it.

"Don't Matter to Me" by Drake feat. Michael Jackson (it feels so wrong with Michael dead tbh) fell 3 spots to number 7 which quite frankly isn't fast enough...it needs to be gone and the sooner the better.

The biggest gainer this week sits at number 8 and it's a return to the top ten for "I Said Hi" by Amy Shark which rode the boost from the release of Shark's debut album "Love Monster" to make a welcome return to the top ten.

The next two songs aren't that good though with "2002" by Anne Marie remaining at number 9 and :"Solo" by Clean Bandit feat. Demi Lovato showing signs it may well be on the way out as it dropped 3 places to number 10.

Gainers.

So apart from Amy Shark's big rise with "I Said Hi",  "Ocean" by Martin Garrix and Khaluid rose from 18 to 12, "Healing Hands" by Conrad Sewell jumped from 21 to 14 (expecting another good jump for this song next week as well) and "Jackie Chan" by Tiesto feat. Dzeko, Preme and Post Malone jumped from 24 to 15.

Another big mover was Kygo and Imagine Dragons collab "Born to Be Yours" jumping from 37 to 29.

Is there a surprise hit in the pipeline for Panic! At the Disco? "High Hopes" jumped 4 places to 34

As rhere were no re-entries...let's get to...

Losers

Happy to report the biggest loser this week was "Sad!" by XXXtentacion which slipped from 11 to 24, "Changes" slipped from 40 to 45 and :"Jocelyn Flores" from 39 to 44.

As for Drake, "Nice for What" went down to 17, "Nonstop" lives up to falling nonstop as it went to 23 from 17, "God's Plan" fell to 28 from 23 and "I'm Upset" went to 43 from 35. (Glad to see all the Drake songs falling, really am sick of hearing about him)

There were other assorted drops with mostly songs that would seem to have made the year end list anyway with "Love Lies" by Khalid and Normani down to 39 from 34, "Psycho" by Post Malone feat. Ty Dolla $ign down to 37 from 31, "One Kiss" by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa went to 20 from 14 and "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran down to 35 from 32.

"Hurt Somebody" by Noah Kahan went down to 41 from 36.

Drop Outs

Really only four drop outs this week with the biggest of them being former number one "This is america" by Childish Gambino (we're not finished talking about him just yet though!)

The others were Drake's "Emotionless", "Boo'd Up" by Ella Mai which has struggled for traction here despite it's success in the USA and "Happier" by Ed Sheeran.

New Entries

Apart from the debut of "God is a Woman" by Ariana Grande, what else debuted this week? Peking Duk's EP "Fire/Reprisal" arrived at 16.

The new single for Childish Gambino "Summertime Magic" entered at 31 while Ed Sheeran's producer Benny Blanco has debuted at 32 with "Eastside" feat. Halsey and Khalid.

The last of the new arrivals belongs to the Hilltop Hoods featuring Adrian Eagle with "Clark Griswold" entering at 48.

ARIA Singles Chart top ten/ Chart Review: 16th July. Eighth week on top for 5SOS but a threat emerges

What did I tell you? Half the Drake songs dropped out and what replaced it was a mish mash of old and new, let's just say this week is a more interesting and diverse week for half the Drake songs dropping out.

Pity I can't say the same for the very top of the chart which leads to the current top ten where "Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer is spending an eighth week at number one however I can see this song having stave off a challenger that I'll get to because this song showed signs of weakness on both streaming and sales.

That challenge isn't going to come from our current number 2 that being "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5 feat. Cardi B. Look, this song is getting pushed back everywhere, only remained at number 2.

One of the biggest movers (there are three big movers into the top ten this week) and I predict could well be the new number one or if not Youngblood's closest challenger next week is Drake's "In My Feelings" which climbed from 15 to number 3. this song is currently doing good numbers on sales and streams.

"In My Feelings" leap into the top 10 mercifully pushed "Don't Matter to Me" by Drake feat. Michael Jackson down to number 4, this song should fall away quickly as the album recedes.

The second new arrival to our top five and indeed the top ten and one I am rather delighted about is "Be Alright" by Dean Lewis which jumped from 19 to 5 this week and I like it's chances of sticking around.

Hell, it helped push "Better Now" by Post Malone down two to number 6 (thank goodness).

The receding of Drake's album helped "Solo" by Clean Bandit up 3 places to 7 and "Lucid Dreams" by Juice WRLD also up 3 places to number 8.

One of only three songs within the top ten to remain where it is is "2002" by Anne-Marie which remained at number 9.

The third and final leaper into the top is sleeper hit "Nevermind" by Dennis Lloyd up 10 places to round out the top 10 at number 10.

Gains

In a week where a LOT gained due to the receding of the Drake album bomb I am only going to mention the really big movers with the biggest being "Rise" by Jonas Blue feat. Jack and Jack which climbed from 43 to 27.

There's more good news on the Australian front with "Reprisal" by Peking Duk going to 12 from 24 last week.

"Ocean" by Martin Garrix featuring Khalid up to 18 from 26, expecting that song to at some stage hit the top ten to be honest.

"I Wanna Know" by NOTD and Bea Miller breaks into the top twenty at 19 up from 25.

"Jackie Chan" by Tiesto featuring Dzeko, Preme and Post Malone up to 24 from 32.

"I'll Be There" by Jess Glynne jumped 9 places to 26, same for "Bed" by Nicki Minaj featuring Ariana Grande which climbed nine to 29.

"Just Friends" by Hayden James feat. Boy Matthews also jumped from 41 to 30.

"Born to Be Yours" by Kygo feat. Imagine Dragons jumped from 49 to 37.

"High Hopes" by Panic! At the Disco jumped 10 places to 38 which is a bit of a surprise.

Re-Entries

The new entries are pretty much mostly 2017 songs that haven't gone away apart from the highest return which was "Meant to Be" by Bebe Rexha feat. Florida Georgia Line at 43.

There was also room for two 2017 number ones in "Rockstar" by Post Malone and 21 Savageback at 45 and because it seems there are still people who haven't brought it, "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran at 47, Sheeran also had "Happier" return at 50.

Losers

So lets blow through the Drake losers here: "Nice for What" to 13, "Nonstop" fell to 17, "God's Plan" slipped to 23, "Emotionless" was the biggest loser down from 12 to 33, "I'm Upset" to 35.

The other big loser this week was XXXtentacion with "Sad!" down to 11, "Jocelyn Flores" down to 39 and "Changes" down to 40.

New Entries

One new entry this week and it comes from a British singer songwriter Ella Mai who is signed to DJ Mustard's 10 Summers Records label, her song "Boo'd Up" has debuted at 46. Quite frankly I am surprised it's taken this long for "Boo'd Up" to arrive in the top 50. It's already in the Hot 100 top 5 right now. that said it could well be off the remix with Nicki Minaj and Quavo.

ARIA Singles Top Ten/ Chart Review: July 9th. Drakepocalypse...not as big as first thought

So weeks like this one are ones where I throw my hands in the air and go does it even matter when at three quarters of the album bomb is going to be gone next week anyway? Point is that yeah we got a Drake album bomb courtesy of the release of "Scorpion" and really given the reaction to the album, I am not sure a lot of it will stick around that said we had an empty vessel of a song by Drake at number one for 13 weeks so the Australian public can surprise me.

It's pretty much status quo at the very top of the chart with 5 Seconds of Summer's "Youngblood" spending a seventh week at the top of the chart and really giving it's still going okay on iTunes and streaming, it still has momentum behind it.

What is still something of a player is the song that knocked "Youngblood" off number 1 in New Zealand this week "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5 feat. Cardi B at number 2, it's now number 1 on Youtube but its getting pushed back on streaming and on sales.

Then we have the first new Drake entry of the week and unfortunately its the song where he uses an unreleased Michael Jackson song as a sample. Seriously, can Drake actually stop using samples of unreleased music from dead artists and making them sound terrible. Way too shit on Michael's music legacy, you asshole!. Anyway "Don't Matter to Me" by Drake featuring Michael Jackson sits at number 3.

Drake's arrival pushed Post Malone's "Better Now" down to number 4.

Not content with having one song in the top 5, Drake has two with "Nonstop" at entering at number 5.

The arrival of  "Scorpion" saw "Sad!" by XXXtentacion pushed back two places to number 6 (Uhh, Australia? I'd like to see this song gone, please).

It also meant big boosts for Nice for What" by Drake to 7 from 16 and "God's Plan" also by Drake to 8 from 29 lat week

Finally, the final two songs aren't by Drake but both got knocked back "2002" by Anne-Marie fell 3 places to 9 and "Solo" by Clean Bandit and Demi Lovato fell 3 to number 10. Good. (Both are terrible songs.

Gains

The biggest gain of the week was also a Drake song with the awful "I'm Upset" going to 17 up from 42 last week.

Beyond that? Well, there was some good news with "Healing Hands" by Conrad Sewell gaining traction off his performance at the Logies up to 21 from 37 and "OTW" by Khalid feat. Ty Dolla $ign and 6lack to 30 from 38 last week were the only big movers up.

Re Entries

Also off the back of the Logies performance "I'll Be There" by Jess Glynne returned at 35.

Losers

Ohh boy, it was a total bloodbath this week but most of these should go up next as the Drake album bomb recedes and Drake songs start dropping or hopefully falling off the chart. I'll do it in dot point form as there are soo many big losers

  • The biggest loser of this week was Kanye West's "All Mine" which fell from 17 to 44
  • Then we have the songs that fell out of the top 10 like "Lovely" by Billie Eilish and Khalid which fell to 13 from 5 last week, :"Back to You" by Selena Gomez fell to 16 from 9 and "Jocelyn Flores" by XXXtentacion fell to 29 from 8, Not a net positive there, hopefully "lovely" and "Back to You" regain their traction next week cause both are good songs.
  • "No Tears Left to cry" by Ariana Grande slipped hard to 22 down ten places while Nicki Minaj's "Bed" with Ariana fell to 38 (I struggle to see "Bed" being a hit quite honestly)
  • "I Said Hi" by Amy Shark fell ten place to 23 although it should get a boost with the album being released tomorrow.
  • "Ocean" by Martin Garrix and Khalid down 8 to 26
  • "Changes" byXXXtentacion fell to 31 from 15 and "Jackie Chan' by Tiesto feat. Dzeko, Preme and Post Malone down to 32 from 23
  • Speaking of Post Malone and Ty Dolla Sign, "Psycho" fell hard to 34 from 21
  • Ed Sheeran's sappy love ballad that's hung around too long "Perfect: fell to 40 from 27
  • "Love Somebody" by Noah Kahan fell to 39 from 25
  • "Just Friends" by Hayden James feat. Boy Matthews down to 41 from 34
  • "Flames" by David Guetta and Sia slipped from 28 to 42
  • Former number one "This is America" by Childish Gambino slipped from 31 to 45
  • "Praise The Lord (da Shine)" by A$AP Rocky feat. Skepta fell from 33 to 45
  • Sadly, the wonderful "Remnd Me to Forget" by Kygo and Miguel fell from 36 to 47 while Kygo's "Born to Be Yours" with Imagine Dragons also took a hit down to 49 from 32
  • Finally "The Middle" by Zedd feat Maren Morris and Grey utterly collapsed 20 places to 50
Time will tell whether these songs will regain their traction.

Drop outs

Given that it's likely some of these will be back I'm just going to go through what did drop out and boy there were some big ones like 2017 number one "Rockstar" by Post Malone and 21 Savage, "Call Out My Name" by The Weekend, "In My Blood" by Shawn Mendes, "I Fall apart" by Post Malone and "Meant to Be" by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line.

I expect most of the above will most likely end up making ARIA's year end list anyway.

Also gone are "Dance to This" by Troye Sivan and Ariana Grande (sorry, that song had flop written all over it sadly), "Shape Of You" and "Happier" both by Ed Sheeran, "Make My Bed" by King Princess and unfortunately "Sober" by Demi Lovato.

New entries

Let's get all the Drake out of the way first as I've already mentioned "Don't matter to Me" at number 3 and "Nonstop" at number 5.

  • "Emotionless' entered at number 11
  • "In My Feelings" entered at number 15 (the song from the Drake album that looks like sticking around....just (sarcasm) wonderful)
  • "8 out of 10" at 27
  • "Mob Ties" at 28
  • "Talk Up" at 33
  • "Can't Take a Joke" at 36

However there was one non Drake song that managed to make it's entry in the top 50 and quite hugh too which was "Be Alright" by Dean Lewis at number 19 (easily the best of the new arrivals for me)

Okay so that wraps up Drakepocalypse blog entry. Let's hope the charts get back to normal quickly because I am thoroughly sick of Drake.

ARIA Singles Chart top ten / Chart Review: 2nd July. Solo breaks into the top ten as XXXtentacion rises

We've got a relatively quiet week here...okay..we've got a busy top ten and scattered new entries plus some big moves up and down the chart, it was busy but relatively quiet in the sense the Drakepocalyse is coming and next week will be fucking ridiculous.

Anyway getting to the top ten, remaining at number one for a sixth week is "Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer, it's really a question of whether it will hang onto number one when Drake's songs unload on the chart, at the moment it seems like it will given it's still going well on sales and streaming.

What is unlikely to have a shot at going to number one at the moment is "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B remaining at number 2 for another week, its going to get hit by the Drake wave next week, heck it's already being pushed back now on streaming.

Post Malone's "Better Now" (the only song that has stuck around from his "Beerbongs and Bentleys album bomb) remains at number 3.

Now for some inexplicable reason, "Sad!" by XXXtentacion climbed 4 places to number 4 to outpeak the song's previous run on the chart which no, given "Sad!" is pretty much XXXtentacion guilt tripping an ex girlfriend and is a half a song it's not a good thing.

However what is a good thing is the massive rise for "Lovely" by Billie Eilish and Khalid which jumped from 11 straight into the top 5 at number 5. Granted it's a song from the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack but I am really happy to see it in the top ten.

I'm also happy to see "2002" by Anne Marie take a 2 place hit to number 6.

Sadly one of the most grating pop songs of recent times, "Solo" by Clean Bandit and Demi Lovato got a 5 place gain to break into the top ten at number 7 but given it's been number 1 in the UK, hardly a surprise.

XXXtentacion has the biggest debut of the week though with "Jocelyn Flores" debuting at number 8. (sigh)

It pushed back "Back to You" by Selena Gomez down three places to number 9. Bit unfortunate that the pending Drakepocalypse will likely push this song out of the top ten. I like it a lot, it's the best thing Selena has done as a solo artist.

Finally "One Kiss" looks to have had its run in the top ten ended, it slipped three to number 10 this week.

Gains.

The biggest game of the week was for "Jackie Chan" by Tiesto, Dzeko, Preme and Post Malone (I presume mostly because of Post Malone) which climbed from 44 to 23.

Unfortunately "XXXtentacion also impacts on the gains because "Changes" jumped from 34 to 15.

"I Wanna Know" by NOTD and Bea Miller jumped from 36 to 26.

In good news, Conrad Sewell's "Healing Hands" gained off it's debut last week thanks to a recent spate of promotional performances, it went up to 37.

Re-Entries

It's baaacck! We can't let go of Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" so its back for a 74th week on the chart at number 48.

Losers

Sadly the excellent "Remind Me to Forget" by Kygo and Miguel was the biggest loser this week as it slipped from 21 to 36.

There were some big falls across the board this week for great songs though with "Love Lies" by Khalid and Normani falling from 10 to 22, "No Tears Left to Cry" by Ariana Grande slipping from 5 to 11 while "I Said Hi" by Amy Shark slipping from 9 to 13. Also Shawn Mendes "In My Blood" slipped to 39 from 32 last week.

Kanye West's "All Mine" dropped 4 places to 17.

Meanwhile the awful "Dance to This" fell off it's debut of 39 to 47. Yikes. Not a good sign for Troye's album and I presume it's because people have realized the song is bad.

Drop Outs

So I am sad to be losing '1950" by King Princess and "Youth" by Shawn Mendes and Khalid but they are taking some crap with them including "Somebody" by The Chainsmokers and Drew Love and the terrible Calum Scott cover of "Dancing on My Own" and also "You Are the Reason" by Calum Scott.

Also gone is "Friends" by Marshmello and Anne Marie which should make the year end list...lovely...not.

New Entries

So apart from XXXtentacion, the other new entries are actually lower down the chart and are alright for the most part.

"Rise" by Jonas Blue feat. Jack and Jack enters at 41,

"High Hopes" by Panic! at the Disco enters at 44 because of the release of the album "Pray for the Wicked" which went to number one on the ARIA album chart

King Princess has a new song on the chart with "Make My Bed" entering at 45.

Finally "Sober" by Demi Lovato entered at 50. (Demi's most vulnerable and haunting song to date).

So yeah that wraps up what was a pretty busy chart however time to go and get into lock down the impending arrival of the Drakepocalypse.
