ARIA Top Ten/ Chart Review: 18th September. Debuts cause chart chaos

There are some weeks that are quiet where there's barely any movement and no new entries to really speak of breaking into the top 10 and then you get weeks like this one where the chart turns into pure unadulterated chaos when a number of huge names drop new singles in the previous week and gain traction enough to break into the top ten.

That's what happened this week as two new entries debuted in the top ten including one song going straight in at number one and one other song making a somewhat surprising leap into the top 10 and it triggered the exits of "Sorry Not Sorry" by Demi Lovato to number 11 from 8 last week, "Feels" by Calvin Harris feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean to 15 from 9 last week and "Unforgettable" by French Montana feat. Swae-Lee to number 12 from the top 10.

So let's let down to this top 10 and as I mentioned we do have a new number one, it's "Too Good at Goodbyes" by Sam Smith, it's his first number one in Australia. Just how much longevity it has at number one is going to be sorely tested.

At number two is "Look What You Made Me Do" by Taylor Swift, this song is still a major player for the top spot as it is doing well on sales but I just wonder if releasing "...You Ready for It" has split streams and sales for Taylor therefore making it tougher for her to have a longer run at the top with "Look What You Made Me Do" but hey I ain't complaining.

Speaking of "...You Ready For It" by Taylor Swift, it gained a spot to number 3. Yet again how much steam this song has even though its not the official single but rather a promotional single remains in question could disappear quite quickly when stronger songs arrive in top ten (eg: Niall Horan's new single).

Dua Lipa restarted the "New Rules" rise toward the top, climbing two places to number 4. It may well be the best song in the top 5 this week if I am honest!

Pink has been doing plenty of promotional work for her album "Beautiful Trauma" but it didn't stop her number one hit "What About Us?" dropping 3 places to number 5

"Glorious" by Macklemore feat. Skylar Gray dropped out of the top 5 this week, it fell two places to number 6.

"Thunder" by Imagine Dragons continues to hang around like the proverbial unwanted bad smell at number 7 for another week.

At number 8 is the second of the new entries to debut inside the top 10, "Dusk Til Dawn" by Zayn feat. Sia. I am quite happy its here to be honest in spite of some notable flaws, it's a decent enough song and could very well get a move going up the chart if all things go well.

"Friends" by Justin Bieber and Bloodpop dropped 4 places back to number 9 because it's really quite the average track that's got a good beat but not much else going for it.

Then to round of the top 10 is the new arrival of "1-800-273-8255" by Logic feat. Alessia Cara and Khalid which climbed 7 places to reach number 10 which made it the biggest mover on the ARIA chart this week, this song seems to have struck a chord somewhere!

Other big moves up outside the top 10 came for "Lay It On Me" by Vance Joy which climbed from 25 to 18 and "What Lovers Do" by Maroon 5 and SZA" climbed from 33 to 28.

A lot of songs experienced falls this week but biggest fall was by "Fallin'" by Jessica Mauboy which dropped from 28 to 39 this week but as I say there are plenty of songs across the board which have peaked and looked to be on their way out anyway.

The only other new entry is this weird collaboration between Hailee Steinfeld, country act Florida Georgia Line, Alesso and Watt for a song called "Let Me Go" which entered the chart at number 50.
Outside the top 50, there were new entries in top 100 from Dean Lewis with "Lose My Mind" at 73 being the best of them, "You're The Best Thing about Me" by U2 at 83, "Love So Soft" by Kelly Clarkson at 88 and "Bad at love" by Halsey at 91.

So with three new entries, what dropped out of the top 50? We lost "Waves" by Dean Lewis, "Bad Liar" by Selena Gomez and "Malibu" by Miley Cyrus. Yet again unless there's promotional single for the album coming, this is not a great sign for that album from Miley considering "Younger Now" has totally flopped.

I really don't know what to expect next week, I think there is a chance that Taylor Swift could return to number one and it's really quite unknown how Niall Horan's new single will shake the chart up again.

Speaking of Niall Horan, he will feature in the latest edition of New Friday Music Review along with Ball Park Music and maybe some Jessie J. See you then!
