Charting 1996; February 18: Shaggy returns to number one

So things on the ARIA singles chart this week have been in a state of flux lately, at least thats what I noticed when I glanced at the chart where no song has been able to stay at number one for mre than two weeks, I say that because there's been yet another change at the top and it's actually a song returning to the number one spot, it's "Boombastic" by Shaggy which had a good sales week to tip
"Wonderwall" by Oasis back to number two after just a week at number one. Whether "Boombastic" has the momentum to be a three or four week number one remains to be seen.

"Be My Lover" by La Bouche regains traction to jump back up to number three even though the song still blows chunks.

Deep Blue Something's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is having their breakfast while remaining at number 4 for a second week.

"Give Me A Reason" by Tracy Chapman virtually swapped with La Bouche and slipped back two places to number 5 while "Tell Me" by Groove Theory remained at number 6. Fine by me, I don't mind either song.

Then we have the first of three big moves into the top ten this week with Monica's "Don't Take it Personal (Just One of Dem Days" which moved all the way from 16 to number 7. Can't say I care about this song all that much but whatever the case, it's her first top ten hit in Australia.

Another big mover was Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet" which leaped six places to number 8 this week, it's also her first top ten hit after "Army of Me" peaked at 35 in May 1995.

TLC have their second top ten hit with "Diggin' On You" jumping from 15 to number 9 this week. Pretty good way to follow up their big hit "Waterfalls".

All this saw "One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men slip back two places to number ten.

Gains

After 7 continue to make big gains with "Til You Do Me Right" up ten places to 22 this week.

Looking like it may well be a hit, Joan Osborne's "One Of Us" leapt 11 places to 23!

Alex Party also had a ten place gain with "Wrap Me Up" up to 33 while people are loving "Warm Summer Daze" by Vybe which went to 39.

"The Good Life" by The New Power Generation jumped nine places to 41.

As does "Peaches by The Presidents of the United States of America which broke into the top 30 this week at 26.

Losers

Pearl Jam's "Merkinball EP" slipped from 33 to 46 to be the biggest loswr of the week. Surprisingly Madonna was another loser with "You'll See" in freefall, down 12 to number 40.

There were big falls also for songs like "Boom Boom Boom" by The Outhere Brothers which slipped from 10 to number 20 and also for CDB's "Let's Groove" which dropped from 9 to 19 but really both those two songs are on their way out, as is "Fairground" by Simply Red which fell from 31 to 42

New Entries

The Smashing Pumpkins have already experienced chart success with "Bullet with Butterfly Wings which is at number 38 this week but they are also back on the chart with "1979" at number 32 and is the highest debuting new song to the chart.

British duo known as Everything but the Girl have their first Australian charting song with "Missing" entering at number 34.

British easy listening group The Mike Flowers Pops have landed on the ARIA top 50 with their early 60s style cover of "Wonderwall"...lets not keep this nonsense on the chart for too long, okay, Australia?

Wrapping up the week is British electronic dance producer Motiv 8 with "Break the Chain" entering at number 50.
