New Music Friday: Katy Perry's & Migos, Cashmere Cat & Ariana Grande...

So here we are again, its Friday and its time to review the new music released. Let's begin with quite the big name shall we?

Song: Bon Appetit
Artist: Katy Perry feat. Migos

Katy Perry is in the same mould as members of One Direction in that it doesn't matter what you think or say about the music they release, it will be a hit even regardless of the controversy surrounding Katy's inclusion of Migos in a guest spot but I have no intention of touching that because its about the music on this blog not the controversy!

What does 'Bon Appetit" serve up? In short, 3 minutes and 48 seconds of auto tuned smeared vocals over a generic beat with only a resemblence of melody kicking in the chorus as Perry basically sings about a guy wanting sex and her wanting to give it to him but its the most unsexiest of songs what with Migos whooping over the prechorus. Migos then deliver some of the most forgettable bars so far in 2017.
If this is Bon Appetit indeed, I'll go hungry.

Rating: A contender for one of the worst songs of the year. 2/10

Song: Quit
Artist: Cashmere Cat feat. Ariana Grande

Cashmere Cat has been working up the credits with young female stars, so far he has worked with Hailee Steinfeld (She also has a new song out this week but we'll get to that) and former 5th Harmony performer Camilla Cabello but this time he has teamed up with Ariana Grande and quit honestly I think this the best of the songs he has done and indeed one of the best Ariana has done vocally.

Quit essentially is a song about a bad relationship and that shes knows she'll instantly have regrets if she goes back but for some reason which really isn't clearly defined in the song, she can't leave him.
Look, its good but its not great, the story needs more explanation like why can't she leave him but Ariana is at her best vocally here and she really does make it work. Heck, it's a major improvement on the trash Katy Perry and Migos offered up this week.

Rating: 7/10 (Could have been higher if the story had been more fleshed out)

Song: First Time
Artist: Kygo and Ellie Goulding

Kygo's collaboration with Selena Gomez is still hanging around the top 10 of the ARIA singles chart but he has teamed up with British songstress Ellie Goulding and I got to say I really wish I liked this song a lot more. The song is about a past love and how she'd go back and do it all with him again.

"First Time" really just doesn't go anywhere so yeah if I had to choose I think Kygo's better work was with Selena Gomez.

Rating: 5/10 (Its a passable effort but yeah, just doesn't build to anything for me)

Song: Most Girls
Artist: Hailee Steinfeld

We have another female empowerment anthem coming tbis time from Hailee Steinfeld as a follow up to her recent collaboration with Machine Gun Kelly and the release of her EP "Haiz" and as far as female empowerment anthems go, this one falls a bit flat, I tend to think with songs that preach female empowerment you need a strong and powerful female vocallist just look at Helen Reddy with "I am Woman" or even Aretha Franklin with "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" and unfortunately Hailee doesn't quite have the pipes to vocally be strong or empowering as the lyrics talk about Most Girls being.

Rating: 5/10. The beat is rather excellent but just the vocal delivery doesn't give this song any kind of punch whatsoever

Song: I'm the One
Artists: DJ Khaled featuring Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne, Quavo

I really considered not reviewing this simply because just from the title and those involved with the recording, it elicited bad feelings, a bunch of uninteresting men getting together sing a song about how they are the one for girls,

Was it as bad as I thought it would be? I'll give it points for the country style guitar line but wow that's the best bit of the song because beyond that is a hot mess of ego stroking, brand names, Lil Wayne comparing the relationship to the relatonship of the deceased Whitney Houtson and Bobby Brown (What the hell?) and Chance the Rapper suggesting that she wants a n***** to pull her hair and because cable don't work, he is his girlfriend's plug so they can watch Netflix...seriously?

The chorus is seriously third grade stuff which basically goes "I'm the one...oh eh oh eh oh" but yet again because Justin Bieber (who really doesn't do anything remotely interesting on this track) is involved it sadly will be a hit which it in no way deserves to be.

Rating: 3/10

Song: Second One to Know
Artist: Chris Stapleton

I heard this song live during a highlights reel of the American Country Music Awards and since then I have been looking forward to hearing the album version of this track and man oh man I wasn't disappointed. What a beast of a song, Stapleton's rough vocals over an already quite rough mix with rollicking guitars and drums make this one of the best country songs released this year. Bring on that album!

Rating: 9/10

Song: Isn't It a Pity
Artist: Bernard Fanning

Its the latest release from Bernard Fanning's forthcoming album Brutal Dawn and its not a pity he released this because musically its gorgeous and the lyrics are as ever from Fanning somewhat complicated. All else I can say is check it out because its pretty damn good.

So best this week goes to "Second One to Know" by Chris Stapleton. Worst is going to "Bon Appetit" by Katy Perry and Migos in a crapshoot with "I'm the One" by DJ Khaled and co.

Next up is the ARIA top 10 and basically any new songs that I haven't covered here. See you tonight!
