ARIA Singles Top Ten/Chart Review: 7th September. Australia, get a bucket and a mop, it's just some Wet Ass Pussy at number one

So this week felt fairly muted, we got some unsurprising changes to the top ten and two new songs debuting in the top twenty plus your regularly scheduled shifts up and down the chart, some of the shifts I am not happy with but let's dive into it with the top ten where we begin at number one with "WAP" by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion spending a third week at the top and again this song is a dominant number one on every single measure...sales and streaming, it's got a lock on the number one spot for awhile yet.

The fight looks to be on for number two with "Mood" by 24KGolden and Iann Dior which on the back of strong streaming and reasonable sales jumped two places to number two and looks to be a threat to "WAP" should it show any signs of weakness, it blew past "Savage Love" by Jawsh 685 and Jason DeRulo which remained steady at number three this week, it's still got some sales and streaming but that won't last forever.

Up three places to number four is "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry and MNEK off the back of solid streaming and sales, this song is going to stay around in the top ten for awhile and really I am fine with that the song is good.

Climbing one place to number five is "Mood Swings" by the late Pop Smoke.which is mostly just in the top five on streaming alone.

"Rockstar" by DaBaby and Roddy Ricch regained some ground up two places to number six mostly due to streaming.

One of the reasons for all the carnage is the two place drop for Drake's "Laugh Now Cry Later" feat. Lil Durk, it slipped this week mostly because sales aren't doing enough for this song and it's only being held up by streaming.

You could say the same for "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles which returned to the top ten this week up three places to number eight mostly due to a resurgence on streaming.

"Breaking Me" by Topic feat. A7S also is hanging on on streaming as it remained at number nine this week....although this song seems to have some sales.

Finally streaming saw "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd rise two places to return to the top ten at number ten.

Gains

The success of "Savage Love" has meant that Jason DeRulo's latest single "Take You Dancing" got the biggest gain of the week up from 49 to 27 this week, s song that could be considered just as annoying as "Savage Love"!

A gain I am not happy about is the big rise for Sia's "Together" which rose 14 places to 34...I mean come on...Sia's done better than this..anyway...the other big gainer this week was Jubel and Neimy's "Dancing in the Moonlight" which climbed from 42 to 26 this week.

Re-Entries

Two returns this week, the best of those is "Adore You" by Harry Styles at 46 and "Ride It" by Regard at 50.

Losses

The biggest loss of the week belonged to "Dynamite" by BTS as it fell from number 2 to number 11. I have a suspicion that this song will steady next week and return to the top ten but we'll have to see.

Outside of that, "Rover" by S1mba and DTG fell ight places to 38 while "Stuck with u" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber tumbled six to 40.

"The Woo" by Pop Smoke got wooed down eight to 33 while "Before You Go" by Lewis Capaldi stumbled six to 35.

"Wishing Well" by Juice WRLD dropped from 24 to 31 while "Smile" with The Weeknd dived from 17 to 23.

Drop Outs

Just the four drop outs with Taylor Swift's 'Cardigan" and "Exile" feat. Bon Iver both gone taking "Paralyzed" by Delta Goodrem and...unfortunately..."My Future" by Billie Eilish with them.

New Entries

Just two new entries to mention this week with the highest new entry of this week belonging to Blackpink's collaboration with Selena Gomez called "Ice Cream" which arrived at number 16.

Finally, Calvin Harris is back on the chart teaming up with The Weeknd for "Over Now" at number 17.

That wraps up this week. Not really expecting much in the way of new entries this week...maybe that SZA song with Ty Dolla $ign and The Neptunes but we'll have to see when ARIA updates their chart at 5pm on Saturday

2000 Sound: 3rd September. Say It Isn't So! A new number one...

So this week kind of feels like a little bit of a disappointment, we had two new entries to the top ten plus other new entries outside of that along with a few songs arriving in the top ten along with shifts up and down the chart but lets deal with the top ten because we have a song debuting on the chart this week at number one..."Music" by Madonna...let's not mince words here, the song is one of Madonna's worst of her career, it's absolutely awful but none the less it rode massive sales to reach the top spot.

It was enough to dethrone "I'm  Outta Love" by Anastacia which fell back to number two as it couldn't quite match Madonna on sales with the same going for "Jumpin' Jumpin'" by Destiny's Child down on to number three and "We Will Rock You" by Five and Queen down to number four.

Britney Spears climbed one place to number five with "Lucky" while "Life is a Rollercoaster"  by Ronan Keating jumped two places to number six, then there's "Breathless' by The Corrs which remains steady at number seven.

Mary Mary hit the top ten for the first time up seven spots to eight and is looking like having a huge hit with "Shackles (Praise You)" (kind of interesting there considering the religious subtext of the song)

Then we have the second new entry on the chart debuting in the top ten with "Say It Isn't So" by Bon Jovi...I'm pretty meh on this one...it's not quite as as good as "It's My Life".

Finally rising four places to number ten is "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams...a strange song that has grown on me a fair bit..

Gains

A quiet week for the gains. Britney Spears "Lucky" with the biggest gain of the week. Several songs including Morcheeba's "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" and Wonderful" by Everclear rose four places but other than that...pretty quiet.

Re Entries

Just the one return this week with "Blow Up The Pokies" by The Whitlams back at 46.

Losers

Kaylan's "Shake It" shook down 22 places to 39 this week and is the biggest loser of the week while "Freestyler" by Bomfunk MCs dropped ten places to 15. There was an eight place loss for "So Real" by Mandy Moore down to 48 while "Thong Song" by Sisqo also plunged eight places to 33.

"Breathe" by Faith Hill dropped six places to 38 while "Just Around the Hill" by Sash! plummeted from 42 to 49.

Powderfinger's "My Happiness" took a dive down eight to 12 while "Shalala Lala" by Vengaboys slipped five to 14.

New Entries

So all up there are four new entries this week with "Music" by Madonna at number one, "Say It Isn't So" by Bon Jovi at number 9.

Mel C is trying to follow up "Never Be the Same Again" with her ballad "I Turn To You" debuting at 16 while Fuel are back on the charts at number 50 with "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)

ARIA Singles Top Ten/ Chart Review: 31st August. "Dynamite" explodes for BTS

We have a reasonably standard week here, folks, a slew of new entries and some songs taking big hits, others with momentum so lets get right to it starting with the top ten and to nobody's surprise "WAP" by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion is at number one for a second week and right now it is a dominant number one, it is crushing its rivals on streaming and is still doing well on sales to be comfortable at the top for the time being.

We have a new entry in at number two this week with "Dynamite" by BTS, now this mostly debuted so high because of sales and the fact that there were so many different remixes of this song on iTunes that it dominated the iTunes chart however this song really isn't a player on streaming oddly enough considering how stan armies are constantly pushing streaming and whether or not it's strong enough not to collapse next week as K Pop songs have a bad tendency to do remains to be seen however it was enough to push "Savage Love" by Jawsh 685 and Jason DeRulo back to number three (More Jason DeRulo later), it's losing ground on streaming and sales are slowly bleeding, this could be leave the top ten sooner rather than later.

The biggest gainer of the week is "Mood" by 24kGoldn and Iann Dior, I warned you all last week that this song would be a top ten hit and that's proven to be the case as it surged hard on streaming and even has a little sales to go with it. I don't see it getting to number one for the time being as the margins are too great but it definitely can reach number two in the next week and yeah I am happy about that as this song is as catchy as sin.

All of this was enough to push "Laugh Now Cry Later" by Drake feat. Lil Durk back two spots to number five, this song doesn't quite have streaming behind it the whole way yet. I think there's a real possibility that this song won't be a number one hit which would be strange given it's a lead Drake single.

The late Pop Smoke continues his surge up the Australian chart with "Mood Swings" up two places to number six, this song has slightly better streaming than "Laugh Now Cry Later" so we'll have to see what happens going forward.

There was also a two place gain for "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry and MNEK to number seven, this is gaining traction on streaming slowly.

Then rounding out the top ten are a trio of songs that are on their way out like "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch which fell four places to number eight this week, it's fading on streaming now as is "Breaking Me" by Topic feat. A7S which tumbled four to number nine and finally "Roses" by Saint Jhn also plunged four places to number 10.

Gains

Already mentioned the biggest gainer of the week with "Mood" by 24kGoldn feat. Iann Dior up from 36 to 4 this week but there was one other big gain of note from their debut last week which was "Heather" by Conan Gray which climbed from 47 to 18 this week.

Then there's cases of continued momentum like for "You Broke Me First" by Tate McRae which got a jump of eight places to 21.

Losers

It was a busy week for the losers here with the biggest loser being Taylor Swift's "Exile" feat. Bon Iver which is heading for exile down from 28 to 50 while Taylor's former number one "Cardigan" dropped from 18 to 33...ouch.

The pain continued for Billie Eilish's "My Future" as it toppled from 30 to 45.

The losses were smaller for "Break My Heart" by Dua Lipa which slipped six places to 28 while "Everybody Rise" by Amy Shark collapsed five places to 37.

"The Woo" by Pop Smoke couldn't be wooed up so it wooed down from 19 to 25 while "Smile" by Juice WRLD scowled down five to 17.

Drop Outs

Four of the five drop outs will make the year end list apart from "Popstar" by DJ Khaled feat. Drake (good) which left the top 50.

Unforunately securing it's place on the year end list and my year end worst hit songs list is "Intentions" by Justin Bieber feat. Quavo...but I am very happy it is finally gone and hopefully won't be back.

Also gone but safe on year end list are "Adore You" by Harry Styles, "Supalonely" by Benee feat. Gus Dapperton and "Ride it" by Regard (it's been bouncing on and off the top 50 lately so you never know)

New Entries

As I mentioned before, BTS debuted at number two with "Dynamite", their highest charting single thus far in Australia as well which I forgot to mention when I was going through the top ten but beyond that?

Well you have to go all the way down to 36 to find Delta Goodrem's "Paralyzed" at 36, her first charting single since "Think About You" peaked at 19 in March 2018.

Jubel becomes the latest to cover King Harvest's 1973 hit "Dancing In the Moonlight" bring Neimy on board for a debut at number 42.

UK grime and hip hop hits the charts at number 44 through "Ain't It Different" and finally Jason DeRulo's music career revival continues with "Take You Dancing" in at 49 (If you think "Savage Love" is annoying, wait til you hear this song!)

That wraps up a pretty busy week...next week.."WAP" should continue it's stranglehold on number one. Expecting debuts for the new Calvin Harris/The Weekend collaboration and the collaboration between Blackpink and Selena Gomez but we'll see what happens when the chart updates at 5pm AEST on Saturday.

2000 Sound: 27th August, Powderfinger find happiness in the top five as S Club 7 "Reach" for the stars in the new entries

So unlike last week where it was quiet, we have another busy week to deal with a slew of new entries including one in the top ten so let's boogie on down and start there, no change at the top with Anastacia's "I'm Outta Love" spending a fifth week at the top, I'm not certain she'll get a sixth as Madonna's releasing a new song called "Music" which is bound to do well so we'll have to see.

Sitting at number two is "Jumpin' Jumpin'" by Destiny's Child as it did last week, it's not really looking like a player for top spot right now. Five and Queen's "We Will Rock You" climbed one place to number 3 on the back of a solid sales week.

There's a new entry in at number four, it comes from Brisbane band Powderfinger with a song called "My Happiness", it had a fantastic first week of sales, it comes from Powderfinger's upcoming album called "Odyssey Number Five".

Now all of this saw former number one "Freestyler" by Bomfunk MCs fall back two places to number five, the song is slowly losing ground and will likely tumble further in the weeks ahead.

At number six, we have the biggest gainer of the week with "Lucky" by Britney Spears rising 14 places! This one was a bit out of nowhere tbh especially as its a bit of a bland pop song coming from Britney!

The Corrs are "Breathless" remain at number seven while Ronan Keating leaps up five places to number eight with "Life is a Rollercoaster".

The Vengaboys are slowly fading out of the top ten with "Shalala Lala" down one place to number nine while Aaliyah's "Try Again" falls back to number ten.

Gains

Already talked about the bi gains for "Lucky" by Britney Spears and "Life is a Rollercoaster" by Ronan Keating into the top ten on an otherwise quiet week for gains with "Could I Have This Kiss Forever" by Whitney Houston and Enrique Iglesias up six to 12 while "Shackles (Praise You)" by Mary Mary is up ten places to 15.

"Rip It Up by 28 Days broke into the top twenty by rising four places to 18

Re Entries

Just the one return this week with Santana's "Maria Maria" feat. The Product G&B back at number 50.

Losers

On a week where we have a LOT of new entries it's not surprising there was a while swathe of songs that lost big, let's start with former number two hit "Never Be the Same Again" which plunged from 35 to 49 this week as it slowly exits the chart.

Sister 2 Sister's "Too Many Times" dived nine places to number 47 while "Sandstorm" by Darude dropped five places to 48. "I Wanna Know" by Joe skidded down six places to number 46.

"Just Around the Hill" by Sash! is finding that hill insurmountable as it dropped from 37 to 42 whole Mandy Moore's "So Real" hit 40, a drop of seven places.

"Doesn't Really Matter" by Janet Jackson copped a ten place hit to 38. while "Its Gonna Be Me" by *NSYNC eleven place plunge means it's not gonna be them at 34.

"Breathe" by Faith Hill hit 32 down from 26.

However the big story is three songs in the top ten last week all took enormous dives with two of those dives being more than fucking welome with "Thong Song" by Sisqo having a wedgie performed on him down to 25 from 6 last week and Madison Avenue's "Who The Hell Are You" dropping nine places to 19. The other song to take a hit is "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi which tumbled from 5 to 23...ouch.

New Entries

So beyond "My Hapiness" by Powderfinger at number four, we got a slew of other new songs this week beginning at number 20 with Sisqo's "Unleash The Dragon"...this song is pretty fucking awful...so I'll be fine with this falling off.

British R&B singer Craig David turns up at 22 with "Fill Me In", his first single on the ARIA singles chart, I feel pretty indifferent toward this song, it's fine but meh...

Leah Haywood returns with her new single called "Crazy" at 31  while Australian nu metal band Sunk Loto land on the chart with "Make You Feel" at 33.

British three piece girl group Madasun have their first Australian charting single with "Don't You Worry" in at number 39, I actually really like this song..the harmonies are good and the song's message is a brutal goodbye to an ex that she has moved on and doing fine.

Finally in what maybe the most corny but fun pop song to hit the chart in some time..."Reach" by S Club 7 debuts at number 44.

ARIA Singles Top Ten/ Chart Review: August 24th: WAP gushes through some Savage Love to reach number one

This week was a busy one and where there was a lot to like across the board..it wasn't a perfect week but yeah this wasn't bad, the biggest news of all was that we have a new number one, the first for both artists, "WAP" by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, it rode massive streaming (this song is a serious streaming juggernaut right now), sales and controversy to rise one place off its debut to number one. Not at all surprising, this song got conservatives knickers in a knot thus ensuring that it was destined for number one not just in Australia but around the world...I don't mind, the song is decent to me...there is absolutely nothing wrong with open, brazen sexuality in music and heck, if male rappers can rap about their penises then Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion can wrap about their vaginas...there.

Moving on..."WAP" pushed "Savage Love" by Jawsh 685 and Jason DeRulo down to number two as it just couldn't match "WAP" on streaming and it has taken a a bit of a dip on sales, this might mean an opening for the highest new entry of the week "Laugh Now, Cry Later" by Drake feat. Lil Durk but it's mostly only got streaming at this point. This song is the lead single for Drake's new album called "Certified Lover Boy" (Yes, that is correct and something that I find to be very funny)

"Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch fell one place to number four as it hangs on on streaming but has started to bleed on sales.

"Breaking Me" by Topic feat. A7S recovered by rising two places to number five because somehow it's still got streaming on board and a small amount of sales. This ain't leaving the top ten any time soon which is unfortunate because I am getting tired of this song.

All of this forced "Roses" by Saint Jhn down two places to number six, it's bleeding on streaming and sales are slowly fading so I can see this song leaving the top ten sooner rather than later.

"Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles has started to fall away on both sales and streaming as it slipped one place to number seven, it's under threat from the rising "Mood Swings" by Pop Smoke which rose two places to number eight, this song is big on streaming right now, wouldn't shock if this was a top five hit.

Rising into the the top ten this week is UK hit "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry feat. MNEK which climbed two places to number nine, this song also has traction on both sales and streaming so this will only continue to rise.

The big loser out of all of this is "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd which slipped five to number ten and honestly given how amazing it's run inside the top ten has been, I am ready to see this leave the top ten.

Gains

Biggest gain this week went to Tate McRae's "You Broke Me First" which climbed from 47 on debut to hit 29 this week.

It was a good week for the late Pop Smoke with "Mood Swings" gaining inside the top ten while "For the Night" rose eight places to 24 while "Before You Go" by Lewis Capaldi rose five places to 25 (Australia, WHY?!)

Losers

The biggest loser of the week is "My Future" by Billie Eilish which crashed from 18 to 30 this week. Not surprising here given Eilish's songs seem to have this strange thing right now where they debut high but fall off in the weeks after which is a little disappointing.

Then there are the continued losses for Taylor Swift songs with "Cardigan" dropping six places to 18 and "Exile" feat. Bon Iver falling eleven places to 28.

Unfortunately "Be Kind" by Marshmello and Halsey also took a seven place hit drop to 34 but in better news "Stuck With U" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber copped a well deserved nine place drop to 35 (honestly it's a song that has only gotten more cloying and horrible every time I have heard it) but speaking of Bieber, "Intentions" feat. Quavo slipped four to 37...not fast enough for me, time for it to be gone.

"Standing with You" by Guy Sebastian dropped six places to number 46 while "Adore You" by Harry Styles crashed seven places to 49, (not that that worried about "Adore You"...it's place on the year end list is safe)

Drop Outs

The biggest drop out this week is "Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion, it's making the year end list for certain as likely will "Pump It Up" by Endor and "Ily" by Surf Mesa feat. Emilee.

Also gone are "Go" by The Kid Laroi feat. Juice WRLD and "The 1" by Taylor Swift.

New Entries

So I have already mentioned the new single from Drake called "Laugh now Cry Later" feat. Lil Durk having the highest debut of the week at number three...it's fine...it's better than most of that last Drake album, will say that not enough was done with the sample though.

Miley Cyrus becomes the latest pop act to dive head deep into 80s nostalgia sampling Stevie Nicks "Edge of Seventeen for her new single "Midnight Sky" which debuts at number 16. It's actually a pretty good song...hope it does well.

Then we have one of the catchiest trap songs of the year in at 36 with "Mood" by 24kGoldn feat. Iann Dior...this song is blowing up on streaming right now and will be a massive hit.

Ava Max notches her third ARIA charting single with "Kings and Queens" in at 44 while finally Conan Gray has finally followed up "Maniac" with "Heather" in at 47.

So yeah that wraps a decent week overall.Next week sees BTS bring "Dynamite" to the chart and likely big gains for "Mood" and "Heather' off their debuts. Nothing is going to challenge "WAP" for number one for awhile but we'll find out when ARIA updates the chart on Saturday at 5pm

Top Ten Best Hit Songs of 1998

1998…a year that would be headlined by the US President of the time having an affair with a White House intern which he would subsequently impeached for while India and Pakistan tested ballistic AND nuclear missiles and Australia re-elected John Howard as Prime Minister. In the sporting world. there were premierships for Adelaide Crows in the AFL and the Brisbane Broncos in the newly formed NRL following the Super League split of 1997 while Michael Doohan would take out the World 500cc Motorcycle Championship.

However I’m not really going to go into any more of the political and other nonsense that went on because not much of it informed the popular music of that year and 1998 was generally a much better year for the charts than the mediocre 1997 with some truly excellent songs across all genres that hit the charts, the year was mostly dominated by pop but hip hop and r’n’b saw some success while rock and country notched decent quality hits as well, now that’s not to say there weren’t some bad songs that were huge…there was but most of the awful is pretty laughable unlike 1997 when No Mercy released “When I Die” (a song that made me WANT to die)

Anyway, lets rip into a good year on the charts with a song that could aptly be the song that both Hillary Clinton and Monica Lewinsky sang in 1998…

10. “The Boy is Mine” by Brandy and Monica.

This was one of the best R’n’B songs from 1998, “The Boy is Mine” opens with a harp and some pretty wild interplay from both Brandy and Monica arguing over a man…now this song could have been downright catty and nasty but the song is written with both Brandy and Monica in mind as a conversation over this guy who apparently seeing the both of them at the same time and both have realized it, both lay the facts out to each other explaining why she is the best for him without diving into the catty nonsense that could have potentially made this song insufferable. Also that production for the time is still sounding so god damn good in 2020 with the harp and guitar, it sounds so organic. Songs of the future that go down this lane need to learn and follow the lead of “The Boy is Mine”.

When I made my 1996 best list, I did acknowledge that this group could be seen as obnoxious, in your face and annoying, even as somebody who liked the group, I can understand why they annoyed so many people but then they recorded this song for their second album that became a single after the highly publicised exit of one of the members of the group and well…

9. “Viva Forever” by Spice Girls

This would have been the perfect way to finish the Spice Girls as a group rather than record that pretty awful third album without Geri Halliwell, “Viva Forever” combines both at the time modern pop and classical elements in the production for a song where the girls are actually on point with the harmonies not just in the chorus but in the verses as well with Mel C, Mel B and Emma given most of the work which makes sense, give the best singers in the group the most to do on the song and really “Viva Forever” is a gorgeous song

For one thing, the lyrics play into the group wistfully remembering bygone relationships (which has a spooky turn given what had happened within the group at the time this song was released with Geri leaving the group to start her own solo music career which would have limited success) and this song is evidence that the Spice Girls were worth something after all.

Now we cross to Canada for a song that I am surprised has not gotten the Tik Tok or meme treatment yet.

8. “One Week” by Barenaked Ladies

It has taken me awhile to appreciate what a true classic 90s gem this song is but it occurred me while quoting the songs lyrics and I realized that “One Week” is more memorable than what I gave it credit for. “One Week” is a song where this man and woman are having a fight and the man realizes he is wrong (he clearly had never learned the wise words “Happy wife, happy life” so is now desperately trying to save face and get back in the good graces of this women and here’s the thing this song works literally just for the many quotable lines that are wedged into every damn corner of the song eg: “Hot like wasabi when I bust rhymes/ Big like LeAnn Rimes” and “Chickity China the Chinese Chicken. You have a drumstick and your brain stops lickin’”

“One Week” is the “Old Town Road” of 1998 and I am glad we got. Shame that Barenaked Ladies could not follow up their success with this song though so feels like they are a bit of a one hit wonder.

Staying in Canada, I deliberated whether I could put this song on the list as during my research I discovered that one of the artists on the song is one hell of an awful human being however I tried to put aside everything I was aware of about the guy and yeah…this song still slaps…

7. “When You’re Gone” by Bryan Adams and Mel C.

Regardless of Bryan Adams as a human being, I have always loved this song and I have to be honest because yeah “When You’re Gone” is stunning from the vocal harmonies to even the sweet guitar that opens the song and honestly even Mel C is the right fit for this song, she has the vocal range to match Adams without over powering him…better than the initial choice of Sheryl Crow which kind of blows me away a bit, I can’t imagine Sheryl on this song.

“When You’re Goe” is that song about missing a lover who is yet to return home, Adams and Mel C are lonely and at the point of begging that partner to come home because they are driving themselves crazy, it’s the sort of song that works even with some flaws like the fact Mel C and Adams don’t really harmonise all that well but I can’t deny that it’s a great driving song and genuinely a song that connects when I am alone.

We’re on a bit of a global trip because we’re headed to New Zealand for this next artist who like the Barenaked Ladies wouldn’t have another ARIA Chart hit but with this one, I am glad she got that brief moment of success.

6. “Sway” by Bic Runga

I never really gave this song much attention…heck, in 1998 I was an eleven year old kid who cared more about what the Spice Girls and Hanson were releasing at the time more so than what this New Zealand based artist was releasing however by 2010, I realized that I truly loved this simple little love song with just Bic Runga’s voice and her guitar, it’s a quiet unassuming song that just hits all the right buttons with the protagonist being love with this person and hoping that the other person notices and feels the same.

Yeah, it is cloying and sweet to the point of needing a denist to some in and get rid of the cavities but Runga nails that sentiment of being in love so perfectly that yeah…I just sigh happily whenever I hear it.

Rock hasn’t featured too heavily on the list so far but we are stepping into rock territory now with the next two picks, this song came from the City of Angels soundtrack and it’s a song that still holds up to this day.

5. “Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls

So I will contend that “Slide” is by far the better Goo Goo Dolls song that somehow wasn’t the huge hit that “Iris”  was however if you are looking for a slice of rock music that still slaps to this day than “Iris” is probably it…yeah, it’s overwrought but can’t lie Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik whose gravelly vocals sell “Iris” regardless and that instrumentation that comes in at just the right moment to sweep everyone and everything off their feet…yeah…this song was made for the movies.

The song is about a guy who is willing to give up his own immortality just to have a very real and very human experiences like reaching out to touch the person he loves, it’s a sentiment that in 2020 probably throws this song higher up on the list because of what we are going through right now with the coronavirus pandemic.

“Iris” still hits in all the right places even in 2020, the Goo Goo Dolls made a classic with this one.

Speaking of still hitting in all the right places in 2020…

4. “Second Solution” by The Living End

The mid to late 90s were a break through for Aussie punk rock act The Living End especially as “Prisoner of Society” was EVERYWHERE in 1997 and with “Second Solution” being the follow up, they were having a wild ride of success and well deserved too. “Second Solution” is one of the more bratty punk rock tracks with Chris Cheney’s attitude really making the song work so well as he puts himself in the shoes of somebody facing the ultimate punishment in prison…death and the impact it has on the person who has been found guilty of a heinous enough crime to warrant being given a lethal injection or hung and is seeking an alternative to death by lethal injection or hanging.

It deserves its place here and The Living End deserved more hits beyond “Prisoner of Society” and “Second Solution”.

So going away from loud politically motivated punk rock, we go to a Danish pop band that had been known for their garish pop songs but got attention for a ballad in 1998 for good reason…it’s excellent.

3. “Turn Back Time” by Aqua

After “Barbie Girl” became one of the biggest and most annoying pop songs of 1997 and possibly all time, Aqua followed it up with the relatively innocuous “Doctor Jones” in 1998 before they dropped this simply gorgeous ballad as their sixth single from the album Aquarium. Lene’s vocals suit this song perfectly, there’s no stupid overacting on this song like there is with “Barbie Girl or even on “Doctor Jones” where Lene sings about making choices and dealing with the consequences of those choices, knowing that she’s regretting the choices she’s made and wishing she could turn back the clock to rectify the things she has done but she can’t, she has to confront what she has done, it’s got this wistful and regretful tone that resonates at just the right level,

The production on this song is also good too with the piano and saxophone providing a gentle groove and a massive difference to the songs that Aqua had released previously. It’s the best song that Aqua released in their pop career, they would fade into relative obscurity down the track but it’s lovely to know that they were good for this beautiful ballad after all.

In 1998, one hit wonders were relatively commonplace, there are a few on the year end list for the year but none that hit the right tone for me except for this one…

2. “Crush” by Jennifer Paige

“Crush” is a song for all those summer wind back playlists on streaming services these days but this is still a terrific pop song from an artist who probably deserved to have more hits. Paige is not chasing love over this guitar and piano driven pop song with the perfect placement of the backing vocals, this is her recognising that what she is feeling toward the guy is just a crush, nothing more, she isn’t going to turn to water every time he touches her and she wants him to accept that she’s just got a crush on him and that they aren’t meant to be together even if he might want something more with her but she lets him know that she can’t commit to that right now.

It is a great pop song and honestly…Jennifer Paige as an artist deserved a lot better. Go check out her 2017 album which is full of the same pop sensibility as “Crush” is.

Before we get to our number one, let’s go through our SEVEN honourable mentions beginning with two songs that didn’t make the ARIA year end list somehow…

HM 1: “Closing Time” by Semisonic.

The fact that this song wasn’t huge in Australia in 1998 makes me mad as this song had hit written all over it and as much as I thought it was about last drinks at a bar before the bar closes for the night, it turns out the song was about impending fatherhood and about a baby being born much like a bouncer clearing out the bar of rowdy patrons. This song would have made my top ten had it been a hit which would be topical especially as lead singer Dan Wilson’s girlfriend at the time was pregnant. Still a great song from a band who is releasing a new album this year.

HM 2: “Show Me Love” by Robyn

Okay Australia, t don’t understand how the hell you could ignore the most perfect of pop songs and not let this become a hit because like “Closing Time”, “Show Me Love” would have made my year end top ten and fairly high up the list as it shows Robyn swallowing her pride and wanting this guy in her life to show her love and what its about…it’s honestly one of the best pop songs of the 90s and by the look of it criminally under rated in Australia.

HM 3: “Thinking of You” by Hanson

This is a guilty pleasure song that I couldn’t justify putting on the list because it felt so short but there’s something sweet and sincere about Taylor Hanson’s vocals and while the production has become a little dated since, it is one of the best of the five singles from “Middle Of Nowhere”

HM 4: “Rollercoaster” by B*Witched

Again, this is me indulging in my love of cheeky Europop music with all its sexual innuendo attached and boy, Irish girl group B*Witched weren’t shy about what they wanted to do…ride the rollercoast of love but it’s just innocent enough that the meaning flies over the heads of kids and induces grins from adults and all packaged into one pop song!

HM 5: “Cry” by The Mavis’s

I debated whether I could put this on the list mainly because it’s got just one element that doesn’t work…the verses and the vocal delivery…seriously “But we gonna DOOOO/ You leave at half past TWOOOOHHHH” sounds really whiny but honestly the song is still pretty good even for the one element of the song that I find really annoying.

HM 6: “Fuel” by Metallica

This is a song that I have only just recently come to appreciate. Mostly due to the fact that through “Charting 1996” I had become more familiar with Metallica’s work and this song occasionally gets airplay on radio so yeah as a rock song, I really do enjoy this and James Hetfield gives a performance to remember on “Fuel”

HM 7: “I Don’t Like It” by Pauline Pantsdown

This only just missed the top ten because I couldn’t justify putting this in the top ten ahead of “The Boy is Mine” or Viva Foever” plus it’s not like the production hasn’t aged badly because it has. Its still a good song though playing on the tropes of politician Pauline Hanson back in 1998.

So now for the number one best hit song of 1998, when I mentioned this group on the year end best hit songs list for 1996, I said that this group would reach greater heights in 1998 and I wasn’t joking, this song is truly one of the best things that they have ever made.

1.       “Cruel” by Human Nature

This was the obvious pick for number one for me, the moment where Human Nature put their harmonies and their ability to sell genuine heartbreak at the forefront of the song also helped by that production of guitar piano and hints of orchestra that come in around the middle that just works, also having Michael take lead is an inspired choice over the production.

“Cruel” is a song that seems about love being so cruel but than finding that special person to spend the rest of life with and there’s nothing the head can do to override the heart…sometimes there’s no holding back feelings.

Then you have the harmonies by the band…and damn, it’s just a gorgeous pop song that didn’t really get the attention it deserved only reaching number 14 on the ARIA singles chart but it was enough for it to make the year end list for the year and thank fucking god it did.

“Cruel” by Human Nature the best hit song of 1998.

2000 Sound: 20th August. Kaylan Shakes It to highest new entry as Anastacia's grip on number one remains unbothered.

Seems like this was a pretty slow and steady week until you look past our top 4 or 5 and realize that it was a pretty busy week so I am going to blow through the top three here because nothing changed with "I'm Outta Love" by Anastacia holding firm at number one for another week ahead of "Jumpin' Jumpin'" by Destiny's Child stuck at number two and "Freestyler" by Bomfunk MCs glued at number three for another week.

Now this is where we get to the changes because unfortunately Five and Queen's "We Will Rock You" climbed one place to number four bringing with it "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi which climbed two places to number five...I'll explain why in a few moments why this rebounded. but first we have to deal with "Thong Song" by Sisqo keeping it's pretty gross presence in the top ten at number six...honestly, we can dump this song's ass at any time, Australia.

Then we have the eleven place gain for "Breathless" by The Corrs which skyrocketed to number seven this week...something I didn't see coming but okay.

Now we get to the reason for the return of "It's My Life" to the top five, "Shalala Lala" by Vengaboys collapsed four places to number eight this week as sales finally started to sputter out.

Aaliyah's "Try Again" fell one spot to number nine. Finally Madison Avenue's "Who the Hell are You?" is hopefully seeing it's final week in the top ten by remaining in the top ten.

Gains

The biggest gain of the week was "Breathless" by The Corrs which I have already mentioned in the top ten but apart from that? There was a five place gain to 31 for "Take a Look Around" by Limp Bizkit and a four place gain for "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" by Morcheeba to 36 but that was about it.

Re Entries

Jut the one return this weeks that being "Rock Me All Night" by Kaylan at 47...more Kaylan when we get to the new entries.

Losers

Couple of big losers mostly down the lower end of the chart such as Black Legend's "You See the Trouble With Me" which plummeted from 26 to 42...ouch.

Not a great week for Australian music either with Christine Anu's "Sunshine On A Rainy Day' fell to 41...I'm fine with this not becoming a hit...it's not a great song while"Ordinary Girl" by Jackson Mendoza tumbled 16 places to 46 and "Blow Up the Pokies" dropped eight places to 48.

Finally, Naughty by Nature's "Holiday" is almost over as it crashed nine places to 50.

New Entries

So I did mention that there was more Kaylan to talk about, well, they have the week's highest new entry with "Shake It" in at number 15. Not a bad achievement especially glancing through the big names in our new entries.

Britney Spears returns with her second single from her new album, the song called "Lucky" about a girl leading a famous life debuts at number 20.

Pop music veteran Janet Jackson is back on the charts with "Nothing Really Matters" at number 28 and finally Jennifer Lopez returns with the pretty annoying "Lets Get Loud" in at number 49
