ARIA Singles Top Ten/ Chart Review: August 24th: WAP gushes through some Savage Love to reach number one

This week was a busy one and where there was a lot to like across the board..it wasn't a perfect week but yeah this wasn't bad, the biggest news of all was that we have a new number one, the first for both artists, "WAP" by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, it rode massive streaming (this song is a serious streaming juggernaut right now), sales and controversy to rise one place off its debut to number one. Not at all surprising, this song got conservatives knickers in a knot thus ensuring that it was destined for number one not just in Australia but around the world...I don't mind, the song is decent to me...there is absolutely nothing wrong with open, brazen sexuality in music and heck, if male rappers can rap about their penises then Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion can wrap about their vaginas...there.

Moving on..."WAP" pushed "Savage Love" by Jawsh 685 and Jason DeRulo down to number two as it just couldn't match "WAP" on streaming and it has taken a a bit of a dip on sales, this might mean an opening for the highest new entry of the week "Laugh Now, Cry Later" by Drake feat. Lil Durk but it's mostly only got streaming at this point. This song is the lead single for Drake's new album called "Certified Lover Boy" (Yes, that is correct and something that I find to be very funny)

"Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch fell one place to number four as it hangs on on streaming but has started to bleed on sales.

"Breaking Me" by Topic feat. A7S recovered by rising two places to number five because somehow it's still got streaming on board and a small amount of sales. This ain't leaving the top ten any time soon which is unfortunate because I am getting tired of this song.

All of this forced "Roses" by Saint Jhn down two places to number six, it's bleeding on streaming and sales are slowly fading so I can see this song leaving the top ten sooner rather than later.

"Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles has started to fall away on both sales and streaming as it slipped one place to number seven, it's under threat from the rising "Mood Swings" by Pop Smoke which rose two places to number eight, this song is big on streaming right now, wouldn't shock if this was a top five hit.

Rising into the the top ten this week is UK hit "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry feat. MNEK which climbed two places to number nine, this song also has traction on both sales and streaming so this will only continue to rise.

The big loser out of all of this is "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd which slipped five to number ten and honestly given how amazing it's run inside the top ten has been, I am ready to see this leave the top ten.

Gains

Biggest gain this week went to Tate McRae's "You Broke Me First" which climbed from 47 on debut to hit 29 this week.

It was a good week for the late Pop Smoke with "Mood Swings" gaining inside the top ten while "For the Night" rose eight places to 24 while "Before You Go" by Lewis Capaldi rose five places to 25 (Australia, WHY?!)

Losers

The biggest loser of the week is "My Future" by Billie Eilish which crashed from 18 to 30 this week. Not surprising here given Eilish's songs seem to have this strange thing right now where they debut high but fall off in the weeks after which is a little disappointing.

Then there are the continued losses for Taylor Swift songs with "Cardigan" dropping six places to 18 and "Exile" feat. Bon Iver falling eleven places to 28.

Unfortunately "Be Kind" by Marshmello and Halsey also took a seven place hit drop to 34 but in better news "Stuck With U" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber copped a well deserved nine place drop to 35 (honestly it's a song that has only gotten more cloying and horrible every time I have heard it) but speaking of Bieber, "Intentions" feat. Quavo slipped four to 37...not fast enough for me, time for it to be gone.

"Standing with You" by Guy Sebastian dropped six places to number 46 while "Adore You" by Harry Styles crashed seven places to 49, (not that that worried about "Adore You"...it's place on the year end list is safe)

Drop Outs

The biggest drop out this week is "Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion, it's making the year end list for certain as likely will "Pump It Up" by Endor and "Ily" by Surf Mesa feat. Emilee.

Also gone are "Go" by The Kid Laroi feat. Juice WRLD and "The 1" by Taylor Swift.

New Entries

So I have already mentioned the new single from Drake called "Laugh now Cry Later" feat. Lil Durk having the highest debut of the week at number three...it's fine...it's better than most of that last Drake album, will say that not enough was done with the sample though.

Miley Cyrus becomes the latest pop act to dive head deep into 80s nostalgia sampling Stevie Nicks "Edge of Seventeen for her new single "Midnight Sky" which debuts at number 16. It's actually a pretty good song...hope it does well.

Then we have one of the catchiest trap songs of the year in at 36 with "Mood" by 24kGoldn feat. Iann Dior...this song is blowing up on streaming right now and will be a massive hit.

Ava Max notches her third ARIA charting single with "Kings and Queens" in at 44 while finally Conan Gray has finally followed up "Maniac" with "Heather" in at 47.

So yeah that wraps a decent week overall.Next week sees BTS bring "Dynamite" to the chart and likely big gains for "Mood" and "Heather' off their debuts. Nothing is going to challenge "WAP" for number one for awhile but we'll find out when ARIA updates the chart on Saturday at 5pm
