Charting 1996: 15th September. Toni Braxton getting high

So not a lot changed this week within the top ten apart from some positional changes, as for the rest of the chart, we got our usual slew of new arrivals but unfortunately for a third week, "Macarena" by Los Del Rios remains at number one, this is pretty much settling itself in for a long stint at the top of the charts which is not good news.

I don't see "Macarena" by Los Del Mar feat. Pedro Castano which stayed at number two but it looks a safe number two for now especially as it's unlikely to knock the Los Del Rios version of "Macarena" off top spot.

Toni Braxton moves up three places to number three with "You're Makin' Me High" after a good sales week while Savage Garden remained steady at number four with "I Want You" 

The same cannot be said of "Return of the Mack" by Mark Morrison which slipped two places to number 5 or for "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion which slipped one place to number six.

"That Girl" by Maxi Priest feat; Shaggy remains stuck at number seven while former chart topper "Killing Me Softly" by Fugees also remains where it is at number eight.

"Just A Girl" by No Doubt swapped places with Tracy Bonham's "Mother Mother" with "Just a Girl" up to number nine and "Mother Mother" down to number 10.

Gains

New Edition's 'Hit Me Off" has risen from 37 to 23 this week and is one of the big gainers this week along with Belinda Carlisle's "In too Deep" which has rocketed to 31 from 49 while Jewel's "Who will Save Your Soul" climbed to 33 from 46 last week.

Kulcha also gained big with people showing they do like "Do You Like It?" as it climbed to 35. 

Losers

Some massive losers mostly down around the lower end of the chart especially for Everything But the Girl which slipped 14 places to 50 with 'Wrong" which seems awfully wrong to me as that song isn't bad.

Powderfinger dropped eight spots to 48 with "D.A.F" while a song that should make the year end list "Ooh Ahh...Just A little Bit" by Gina G dropped from 33 to 47 this week.

Also falling hard are Pearl Jam's "Who You Are" to 46 and Robbie Williams "Freedom" to 46. The Corrs "Runaway" dropped eight places to 40

New Entries

Let's crash through these new entries and we start at number 30 with the biggest new entry of the week coming from crooner Bryan Adams with "Lets Make a Night to Remember".

The Fugees have hit the charts with their follow up single " Ready or Not" debuting at number 34. 

It's then to number 37 where we find Crowded House with their new single "Not the Girl You Think You Are", it's set to be be on the band's greatest hits album called "Recurring Dream: The Very Best of Crowded House"

Eternal are back with "Someday" at number 38.

Welsh singer songwriter Donna Lewis has her first chart entry in Australia with "I Love You Always Forever" in at 42.

UK dance singer Newton has recorded a cover of Dan Hill's hit "Sometimes When We touch" ( a song I do not like AT ALL for the record in the first place) and it's in at number 45 to wrap up the week. 

ARIA Singles top ten/chart review

So this week was manic because it not only saw the Taylor Swift album bomb pretty much die in the arse and bring a whole slew of new songs with but there's also a new entry in the top ten that could pose a big threat to our number one in the weeks ahead, speaking of our number one, "Dance Monkey" by Tones and I remains at number one for a sixth week.

Its now clear the challenge isn't going to come from "Senorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello which remained at nunmber two or from "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X regaining some ground to go number three. We'll discuss the underlying reason why this song is back up to number three.

Same goes for "Beautiful People" by Ed Sheeran and Khalid which also recovered to number four.

There's a new song in a number 5 and it's the latest single from Post Malone's recently released album "Hollywood's Bleeding" called "Circles". This thing has traction on streaming right now and I expect this song will challenge "Dance Monkey" in the weeks ahead for number one.

Speaking of Post Malone, I hope whem the album bomb hits next week it wipes out shit like "One Thing Right" by Marshmello and Kane Brown which stayed steady at number seven this week. I'd like to see it gone.

However the reason several songs gained ground this week is because Taylor Swift's "Lover' suffered a five place drop to number eight. Ouch. Would like to see this song stick around. It's really quite good.

What isn't so good is the one place gain afforded to "Ran$om" by Lil Tecca to number nine. Maybe Post Malone is more of a chance at booting this song, either way I hope this song goes from the top ten sooner rather than later. Ugh,

"All Good Girls Go to Hell" has a video as Billie Eilish's former chart topper "Bad Guy" drops from 8 to 10 this week.

Gains

The biggest gain this week belonged to 5 Seconds of Summer with "Teeth" rising from 0 to 17. Good to see this song taking a bite out of the charts.

Normani's "Motivation" rose from 35 to 28 this week in further good news. I really do like that song.

In fact most of the gains are pretty agreeable with "Higher Love" by Kygo feat. Whitney Houston up six places to 31.

"Money in the Bank" by Drake and Rick Ross jump six places to 33 and "Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper rises nine to 34. while "If I Can't Have you" by Shawn Mende oses 7 to 40

The worst of the gains is pribably "South Of the Border' by Ed Sheeran, Camila Cabello and Cardi B rising 11 places to 39.

Re- Entries

With Taylor Swift's album receding there was a rush to fill the top 50 especially around the bottom end of the chart and for the most part I'll take "Eastside" by Benny Blanco feat. Halsey and Khalid  back at number 41. "Right Back" by Khalid at number 42 and especially "I.F.L.Y" by Bazzi at number 45.

But why is "Rescue Me" by OneRepublic back at nunmber 46 or "Takeaway" by The Chainsmokers feat. Illenium and Lennon Stella. Both those songs suck.

Losers

The biggest loser this week were mostly Taylor Swift with the biggest loss coming for "The Man" which fell hard from 17 to 30. Cruel Summer" dropped from 22 to 35 and "Me!" feat. Brendon Urie dropping nine places to 50.

Drop outs

All the drop outs were Taylor Swift "Lover" album tracks  with "I Forgot You Existed", "Paper Rings", "Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince", "I Think He Knows", "The Archer" (sadly), "Cornelia Street", "London Boy" and "Death by a Thousand Cuts" all gone.

New Entries

Already mentioned Post Malone in at number five with "Circles" but Lizzo looks set to follow up the success of US number one "Truth Hurts" with success for another 2016 song "Good As Hell" which debuted this week at number 32.

Finally this week, the Jonas Brothers managed to get "Only Human" to chart at number 49 but I don't expect this one to stick around Post Malone set to dominate the charts.

We'll find out how big Post's domination is when the chart is updated and released at 5pm on Saturday

Charting 1996; 8th September. Macarena one two punch

So this week saw some changes with momentum starting to stall for a few songs making a run at the top ten but let's deal with said top ten because for a second week it's "Macarena" by Los Del Rios at number one and that doesn't look like changing right now however right behind it at number two is "Macarena" by Los Del Mar feat. Pedro Castano which rose three places to reach the bridesmaids slot. Seriously, isn't one version of "Macarena" at the very top of the charts enough, Australia?

Ugh, anyway it was enough to push Mark Morrison's "Return of the Mack" back to number three. I'd be surprised now if this song did get to number one as its sales started to fall off.

In exciting news, "I Want You" by Brisbane pop act Savage Garden rose two places to break into the top 5 at number four pushing former number one "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion back to number 5,

Toni Braxton is  the biggest gainer inside the top ten with "You're Makin' Me High" up four places to number six, it's not a bad song to be honest, check it out.

"That Girl" by Maxi Priest feat. Shaggy remains at number seven this week as Fugees former chart topper "Killing Me Softly" drops four places to number eight.

"Mother Mother" by Tracy Bonham stays steady at number nine while No Doubt fall two places to round out the top ten at number ten with "Just A Girl"

Gainers

Two songs breaking into the top twenty this week with the first of those being The Remembbrandts jumping from 25 to 16 and Eric Clapton's excellent "Change the World" jumping six places to 18..

The biggest gain this week came from Primitive Radio Gods with their ridiculously titled song "Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth with Money in my hand" jumping ten places to 35 while "Crazy '96" by Daisy Dee jumped from 46 to 38.

Losers

Not much in the way of massive losers here either with Pearl Jam's "Who You Are" dropping from 22 to 30 and "Freedom" by Robbie Williams tumbling from 21 to 28.

New Entries

The biggest new entry of the week belongs to R.E.M with their new single "E-Bow The Letter" debuting at 23.

Everything But the Girl return at number 36 with their new single "Wrong" while American R 'n' boy band New Edition hit the chart with "Hit Me Off" at number 37.

Nada Surf are in at number 43 with "Popular"

The Brits have a brand new all female pop group known as the Spice Girls and they have arrived on the Australian charts with their debut single "Wannabe" at number 45. It's certainly catchy enough to be be huge.

American folk singer songwriter Jewel debuts "Who Will Save Your Soul" at number 46 while Fun Lovin' Criminals" are bringing "Scooby Snacks" to the chart at number 47.

Finally Aussie band Kulcha's new single "Do You LIke It?" in at 48.

Look, it's probably going to be "Macarena" at number one again next as disheartening as it is but we'll see.

ARIA Singles Top Ten/Chart Review: 1st September. Chart feels Lover's Impact

This week is the week of Taylor Swift, she created a path of destruction that impacted up and down the chart including in our top ten with the very much improved "Lover" because unlike the mess that was made with the rollout of previous album "Reputation", "Lover" was made available on streaming on the DAY OF RELEASE which led to the chaos seen on the chart and there'll be more chaos when Post Malone undoubtedly turns up in a couple of weeks with his new album "Hollywood's Bleeding".


However Taylor's impact was not at the very top where "Dance Monkey" by Tones and I spends a fifth week at number one and honestly its a dominant number one right now, it's leading digital sales and streaming, the only one it could be knocked off number one is if Post Malone's new single "Circles" does some pretty impressive numbers when "Hollywood's Bleeding" has it's inevitable album bomb. "Dance Monkey" is now a big international hit having gone number one in Norway, Sweden (dropped to number two this week though), Finland, Ireland and Denmark, number eight in Germany and seems set to do big business in the UK.

"Senorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello remains at number two and it's dominant there just can't bridge the gaps on streaming and sales to "Dance Monkey"

Taylor Swift's impact on the chart this week begins at number three with this week's greatest gain that being the title track "Lover" going up 12 places to number 3. I don't see it staying there unfortunately, it's streams have begun to fall away somewhat.

But it did push "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X back to number four as attention turns to "Panini". I expect this song will have a slow fall from the top ten.

Same could be said for "Beautiful People" by Ed Sheeran and Khalid. I've warmed to this song a bit in recent weeks but it did take a one place fall to number 5.

Remaining healthy at nunmber 6 is Blanco Brown's "The Git Up". This song is doing well on sales...just needs streaming to get behind it in a big way.

Unfortunately moving up two places is "One Thing Right" by Marshmello and Kane Brown  to number seven. We don't need EDM faux country in the top ten right now, Australia.

Billie Eilish has dropped the climate changed themed video for "All Good Girls Go to Hell" as "Bad Guy" drops three places to number 8.

"Goodbyes" by Post Malone and Young Thug dropped two places to number 9, It will get a boost when the album drops.

Completing the top ten is the sack of turd that is "Ran$om" by Lil Tecca which dropped four places to number ten and unfortunately because streaming think this crap is worth anything, it's going to stick around the top ten and be the bane of my existence.



Gains

So outside of "Lover" jumping 12 places to number 3. Taylor's second single from "Lover", "You Need to Calm Down" rebounded ten places to 14.

"Slide Away" by Miley Cyrus broke into the top 20 jumping four places to 18.

The gain I am most happy about though is "Motivation" by Normani jumping from 47 to 35...great news. I really like the song and want it to become a hit.

Re-Entries

We got two re-entries this week and unsurprisingly they are both from Taylor Swift with "The Archer" back at 36 (YAY!) and "Me!" feat. Brendon Urie at number 41.

Losers

Taylor Swift did some serious damage with some big songs falling HARD this week, the biggest coming for 5 Seconds of Summer's pretty terrible "Easier" which dropped from 30 to 46 this week (there's more 5 Seconds of Summer to come in the New Entries)

"Cross Me" by Ed Sheeran feat. Chance The Rapper and PNB Rock tumbled from 25 to 38 and a Ed Sheeran song I am surprised is still on the chart if I am to be honest "South of the Border" feat. Camilla Cabello and Cardi B dropping to 50 from 36.

"Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper hit the skids from 32 to 43. It's been on the chart for 47 weeks now.

"Never Really Over" by Katy Perry was also hit as it tumbled 12 places to 45 while NF's "Time" dropped ten places to 49.

"If I Can't Have you " by Shawn Mendes plunged to 47 from 34 while Illy's "Then What" dropped to 44 from 35...that said I expect "Then What" to rebound hard.

Drop Outs

The "Lover" album bomb took some long running hits with it including 2018 hit "Eastside" by Benny Blanco feat. Halsey and Khalid (it spent 58 weeks on the chart!) and songs that will safely make the year end list like "Sucker" by Jonas Brothers, "3 Nights" by Dominic Fike, and "Talk" by Khalid.

Also gone but won't make year end are unfortunately "Right Back" by Khalid, "Small Talk" by Katy Perry (Not a good week for Katy!), "Painkiller" by Ruel and "I.F.L.Y" by Bazzi

Songs that suck but might unfortunately make year end: "The London" by Young Thug feat.  Cole and Travis Scott and "Rescue Me' by OneRepublic.

Finally also gone is "Panini" by Lil Nas X

Songs that suck butt won't make the year end list: "Takeaway" by The Chainsmokers feat. Illenium and Lennon Stella.

New Entries

So let's blaze through all nine new entries from Taylor Swift, she of course got the biggest new entry of the week with "The Man" at 17, "Cruel Summer" at 22 (a song that has become a fan favourite),  "I Forgot You Existed" at number 24, "Paper Rings" at 29, "Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince" at 32, "I Think he Knows" at number 34, "Cornelia Street" at number 40, "London Boy" at 42 and finally.."Death by a Thousand Cuts" at number 48.

Finally the only non Taylor Swift new entry is "Teeth" by 5 Seconds of Summer at number 30.


That wraps up a good but long and kind of eventful week. Post Malone's new single "Circles"  is set to cause some disruption to the top ten next week, we'll find out how much at 5pm AEST on Saturday

Charting 1996: 1st September. AAAYYY MACARENA!

It finally happened, the writing has been on the wall for the past few weeks with the undeniable momentum of "Macarena" by Los Del Rio that it would go number one which it did this week leaping four places to number 1, it was a case of timing and with the dance craze to boot, I don't see how this annoying craze is going to get booted off the top spot any time soon.

It muscled its way past "Return of the Mack" by Mark Morrison which remain steady at number two this week but ahead of last week's chart topper "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion which fell two places to number three and I don't see it going back there given slowing sales.

Same csn be said for "Killing Me Softly" by Fugees which dropped one place to number four.

One of the biggest gainers of the week is the Los Del Mar feat Pedro Castano version of "Macarena" which leapt from 13 to 5 this week. (We do not need two versions of the same annoying song in the top five, Australia).

"I Want You" by Savage Garden and "That Girl" by Maxi Priest feat Shaggy remained stagnant at six and seven respectively.

No Doubt's "Just a Girl" tumbled four places to number eight triggered by the big rise of Los Del Mar's version of "Macarena". Same could be said for the one place fall of "Mother Mother' by Tracy Bonham to number nine.

Finally the second song making it's arrival to the top ten is "You're Making Me High" by Tonni Braxton at number ten.

Gains

Eric Clapton's "Change The World" jumped from 40 to 24 this week which is great because it's a good song, hope it goes higher in the weeks ahead.

It was also a good week for TV theme songs with The Remembrandts "I'll Be There for You" up from 43 to 25 while Bodeans "Closer to Free" went from 20 to 12.

Powderfinger's "D.A.F" rose from 46 to 39 this week. 

Losses.

Gloria Estefan's "Reach" continues it's strange run by dropping from 31 to 47 this week. Seriously. where's the consistency here?

A hit on the way out is "Mission Impossible Theme" by Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen which slipped from 36 to 22 this week. 

"You Learn" by Alanis Morissette unfortunately tumbled from 26 to 37 while Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams" stumbled nine places to 41 as did The Presidents of the United States of America with "Dune Buggy" dropping to 33. 

New Entries

The biggest new entry this week arives at number 19 with George Michael's "The Spinning the wheel" ep. Not expecting this to be as big as "Fastlove" was earlier this year.

Midnight Oil are back on the charts with new single called "Underwater" at number 23, the song comes from their forthcoming album "Breathe"

It's all the way down to 43 where we find Belinda Carlisle's new single "In Too Deep". Hope this does well for her to be quite honest. It's a decent song.

Primitive Radio Gods win the award for the longest song title I have seen in some time while debuting at number 45 with "Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" (seriously!)

Bush's follow up to "Glycerine" has charted with "Comedown" arriving at 48 while rockers AC/DC turn up at 49 with "Bailbreaker"

Finally Coolio gets the last of the debuts this week with "It's All the Way Live (Now)" at number 50. 

ARIA top ten singles/ Chart review: 26th August. Top Ten gets held to Ransom

So this year, there's been rough sections, sometimes its the gains, the losses or even the new entries that are pretty awful but this week, it's the top ten as we got two songs arriving in the top ten that are absolute garbage and will hopefully be eradicated from the top ten when Taylor Swift's album bomb swings in next week but we'll get to all that.

Let's start at the top where we have an extremely dominant number one in the form of "Dance Monkey" by Tones and I which spends an fourth week at number one and at this point, I don't see what is stopping it given it's margins on both streaming and digital sales especially with the EP out on Friday, I can see this spending 6 or 7 weeks at number one unless Post Malone's new song does some crazy numbers. 

"Semorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello remains a pretty safe number two as it has strong streaming behind it right now. 

Digiral sales are barely enough to hold up "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X which remains at number three this week as his team turn attention to his next single which is "Panini". 

A song I have warmed to a bit in recent weeks remains at number four that being "Beautiful People' by Ed Sheeran and Khalid while its a similar situation for "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish at number five.

"The Git Up" by Blanco Brown rose two places to number six this week on the back of strong digital sales which I continue to be fine with because I like that song.

It pushed "Goodbyes" by Post Malone feat. Young Thug back to number seven this week.

What I am not okay with is the big 7 place gain for Lil Tecca's "Ransom" to move it up to number 8..come on Australia, this song sucks, it's not deserving of being anywhere near the top ten...oh well..hopefully Taylor Swift's album bomb will see it gone from the top ten for a week or so.

Also in the unwanted in the top ten category is the EDM/country but absolute crap that is "One Thing Right" by Marshmello and Kane Brown which rose three places to number nine. Taylor can erase this song from the top ten as well.

Finally rounding out the top ten is "Piece of Your Heart" by Meduza and Goodboys which fell one place to number 10.

Gains

Apart from "Ransom" by Lil Tecca climbing big into the top ten, there's no other real major gains this week

Losers

The biggest loss this week was for Katy Perry's "Small Talk" which fell from 33 to 45 this week. Somewhat surprising but hopefully a video might help stabilise that song so we'll see.

Drop Outs

We have two big ones this week that being "Wow" by Post Malone and "Woke Up Late" by Drax Project featuring Hailee Steinfeld. "Wow" will definitely make the year end list but I am not sure on "Woke Up Late"...we'll see.

The other two definitely won't be making the year end and in "Call You Mine" by The Chainsmokers feat Bebe Rexha...that's a very good thing as that song is ass. Also gone is "Antisocial" by Ed Sheeran feat. Travis Scott.

New Entries

All four of the new entries are all ranging in excellent to okay. We start off with the very good "Lover" by Taylor Swift which is the highest new entry of the week at 15 and I expect this song to go top ten when the album bomb strikes next week.

In at 22 is the okay "Slide Away" by Miley Cyrus. Really not sure with what Miley is doing with all these song releases right now.

Khalid's released "Right Back" from his album "Free Spirit" and lodged it number 41 while finally the awesome "Motivation" by Normani debuts at number 47.

So next week, it's the impact of the imminent Taylor Swift album bomb, she'll definitely have a big impact on the top ten but as for other songs, we'll have to wait and see until Saturday at 5pm AEST when ARIA releases the chart. 

Charting 1996: 25th August: Macarena and TV themes.

So there's a certain turbulence to the chart this week that suggests a shake up ain't far away and looking at this week's top ten, it seems clear that something is on the way.

Celine Dion remains for a third week at number one with "Because You Loved Me" but I am not certain that it will get a fourth week given its slowing on sales and Mark Morrison's "Return of the Mack" is snapping at its heels at number two but whether its a contender for number one is uncertain.

What isn't a contender is "Killing Me Softly" by Fugees which got dumped back to number three but its still got strength enough to stay in the top 5 although in 1996...who can tell?

No Doubt stays at number four  with "Just A Girl", I can see this falling away.

But the song with the biggest momentum and is presenting itself as a threat to the number one spot is Los Del Rios with "Macarena" which climbed seven places to number five this week and unfortunately, while being very catchy, is set to get annoying very quickly.

Savage Garden continue to be the lone Australian act in the top ten with "I Want You" remaining at number six.

Maxi Priest gets a two place jump for "That Girl" feat. Shaggy to number seven. Potential for this song to go top five.

"Mother Mother" by Tracy Bonham drops three places to number eight. This song has become a bit of a critical love lately.

"I Love to Love"  by La Bouche dropped one place to number nine while Gary Barlows "Forever Love" remains at number ten.

Gains

So moving into the gains and BoDeans 'Party of Five' theme "Closer to Free" which jumped 15 places to number 20. Also a good seven place gain for "Macarena" by Los Del Mar feat. Pedro Castao to number 13.

"I Live for You" by Chynna Phillips breaks into the top 20 with a nine place jump to 19.

Robert Miles might have another hit on his hands with "Fable" up to 29 from 37.

Also a big gain for "How Do U Want It" by 2Pac feat. KC and Jojo up to 33 from 49.

Finally in positive news "Change the World" by Eric Clapton gained ten places to 40, positive in that I really like that song so am happy to see it doing well.

Losses

Let's start a little lower down with "Glycerine" by Bush going sour down to 45 from 32 last week.

Human Nature's "Tellin' Everybody" has slumped from 31 to 41 while Everclear's "Santa Monica (Watch The World Die)" dropped thirteen places to 38 this week.

Gloria Estefan has had to "Reach" down this week as "Reach" hit 31 from 23 this week and finally "Theme from Mission Impossible" by Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen fell from 14 to 22.

New Entries

The biggest new entry of the week comes from the Pet Shop Boys with "Se a vida e (That's the eay Life is)" debuting at number 12.

Another TV theme new this week comes from The Rembrandts and their song "I'll Be There for You" from the US TV sitcom "Friends" arrives at 43

Thankfully Powderfinger are back on the charts with "DAF" at 46 and finally a Dutch singer who goes by the stage name Daisy Dee is in at number 50 with "Crazy '96"...honestly the sooner that is gone the better.
