All 4 1994: 1st May. Whoomp! I'll Remember Beautiful Girl and Johnny Man

Well...this week is pure chaos, we have a new number one and EIGHT new entries to talk about this week which include Madonna but let's not ramble on anything further and get stuck into our top ten because like I said we do have a new number one and it's one that's been in the stars for awhile because "The Sign" by Ace of Base steamrolled it's way to number one courtesy of enormous sales and looks to be settling into a lengthy stay at number one.

Right behind "The Sign" is "Breathe Again" by Toni Braxton which jumped four places to number two because it had nearly as good a sales week as "The Sign".

This pushed former number one "The Power of Love" by Celine Dion back to number three mostly because this song's sales couldn't go with the two songs above it.

Remaining at four and five respectively is :"Without You" by Mariah Catrey and "Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen which both had just enough sales to hang on where they are.

"It's Alright" by East 17 slumped three places to number six, it's on it's way out naturally however "Dum Da Dum" by Melodie MC remained steady at number seven.  Rebounding one spot to number eight is "Sing Hallelujah" by Dr Alban.

"Whatta Man" by Salt 'n' Pepa feat En Vogue skidded down one spot to number nine while remaining at number ten is "Things Can Only Get Better" by D:Ream.

Losers

So because we do have A LOT of new entries this week, it is to be expected a lot of songs lost ground this week beginning with "Dry County" by Bon Jovi which collapsed eight twelve places to forty eight.

"What's My Name?" by Snoop Doggy Dogg tumbled nine places to forty seven this week, it should make the year end safely.

Former top ten hit "Asshole" by Denis Leary continued its path out down from thirty three to forty six. Pearl Jam's "Daughter" slipped fro thirty seven to forty four.

"Feelin' Alright" by EYC fell down six places to thirty secen while "Slave to the Music" by Twenty 4 Seven feat. Stay-C and Nance stumbled nine places to thirty six. Beverly's version of "The Power of Love" slid ten places to thirty five. "Hush Sweet Lover" by KD Lang got hushed six spots to thirty four.

"Anything" by Culture Beat slipped seven places to twenty nine while "Said I Love You...But I Lied" by Michael Bolton fell nine spots to twenty eight. "Let Me Show You" by K-Klass tumbled eight places twenty six.

"Return to Innocence" by Enigma slid from sixteen to twenty two, ?Can We Talk?" by Tevin Campbell collapsed six places to twenty.

Gains

So quite surprisingly we do have a couple of decent sized gains with "Right in the Night" by Jam & Spoon feat Plavka climbing to sixteen, I'd bank on seeing this song in the top ten soon, folks.

"Feel Like Making Love": by Pauline Henry jumped from twenty three to seventeen while "Is It Love" by Twenty 4 Seven feat. Stay-C and Nance climbed seven places to twenty five.

Pearl Jam's "Animal" jumped ten places to thirty two off it's debut last week, also up ten off it's debut is "Easy" by Hunters & Collectors to thirty eight.

New Entries

Eight new entries this week, beginning with...

50. "Take It To The Top" by Peter Andre

New Peter Andre song and I really hope this one is better than the last effort I reviewed from him. Well no, because this sounds like Andre trying to rip off Bobby Brown's late 80s shtick that worked only Andre does not have the vocal presence or the ability to sell it in a manner that is anywhere near covincing. say what you want about Bobby Brown, he at least had the charisma to sell "My Prerogative", this just sounds like an 80s left over that would be better left forgotten...next!

49. "Danny Man" by Jimeoin

So this is a song from Irish comedian Jimeoin and yeah, this sure is an Irish song at heart in the instrumentation with the flute and that interpolation of "Danny Boy" on the hook. What does wind up hilarious is Jimeoin's hilarious attempts at rapping but he does manage to stay on beat and sound like he is having fun with it. Look, it smacks of novelty song but it's definitely one of the better novelty songs I've heard, check it out if you want a laugh.

45. "Rocks" by Primal Scream

We now move to another part of the UK, this time Scotland courtesy of band Primal Scream with this song from their fourth studio album called "Give Out But Don't Give Up" and what I will say is that that hook is ridiculously catchy with more than enough stomp clap energy in rock format to go around. It's definitely a cheerier sound in the alt rock format and an antidote to those done with more the grungey sound that has been coming from bands like Nirvana and others. Nice song.

42. "I Believe" by Marcella Detroit

So one of the co-writers of Eric Clapton's 1977 hit "Lay Down Sally" and was a member of Shakespears Sister who had a hit in 1992 called "Stay" has stepped into the solo realm again with the lead single from her second album "Jewel" and yeah, this song sounds like radio friendly alternative pop with Detroit singing about how giving love will give it back to the person giving the love. Its bit of a cornball love song but Detroit's vocal performance is powerful enough to make you think she believes what she is selling...not bad I guess even if the production is giving 1990s nappies ad.

41. "Whoomp (There It Is)" by Tag Team

So from Marcella Detroit, we dive into the world of what sounds like sports hype anthems or dubious ass anthems where the only thing that the hook has is the chanting of "Whoomp...there is it is!". The rap verses are so quick and add so little that this song feels eight to ninety percent hook but at least it's better then...

23. "Doop" by Doop

And our bad Eurodance song of the week feat. a chopped and sped up version of a Charleston based big band song over a house backing track and by god it's as annoying as all hell to sit through especially with those vocals that sound like like she's having a fucking coronary over that beat or they recorded a chicken laying an egg for it. Yeah this song is trash and isn't worth justifying.,,,next.

12. "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" by The Symbol

Brand new music from...Prince...or as he is now calling himself The Symbol and I got to be honest, I think this is the most I have genuinely liked a Prince love song, because it does sound like he believe she's the most beautiful girl he has ever seen and I do like the guitar flourish under the song along with the piano that punctuates the chorus. It's just a dreamy pop song that doesn't require for The Symbol to exude a load of charisma to be believeable...I'll take this.

11. "I'll Remember" by Madonna

So I am going to say it, Madonna's run in the nineties so far has been shaky at best in terms of quality...sure "Vogue" was awesome but honestly duds like "Justify My Love" and "This Used to Be My Playground"....come on Madge, you can do so much better than both of those but with "I'll Remember" being for the film "With Honors", I had to hope this would be better than her recent output and yeah...it is but I just wish Madonna's voice was not buried by the choppy production on the verses, she sounds so muffled, it's worrying but then the production gets better on the hook and she sounds clearer,..I don't know, the hook is nice and that's all I'm prepapred to say about this song

Kind of a long and unexpectedly rough week here but best and worst do fall out reasonably easy. Worst is going to "Doop" by Doop for being an actual fucking headache of a song. Peter Andre and Tag Team can consider themselves lucky.

"The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" by The Symbol runs away with the best of the week.
