This week is a big one and more because of the story that played out at the very top of the charts this week...that's right we have a brand new number one and one that has been long in coming, "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X has fallen two weeks short of the record of most number of weeks at number one held by Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You" which spent 15 weeks at number one in 2017, for the moment as it was knocked off the top spot by "Senorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, it s Mendes first number one in Australia and Cabello's second after "Havana" featuring Young Thug went to number one for three weeks in 2017,
Now I said for the moment regarding "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X because there's a distinct possiibility that given the remixes that have been dropped in recent weeks that the song could return to the top spot similar to what happened in May when it lost the top spot for a week to "I don't Care" by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber but it's streams are starting to fall away and with stronger songs behind it, its facing an uphill challenge. "Old Town Road" did however break the record for most weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 having spent 17 weeks on top, the record was originally 16 weeks head by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's 1990s hit "One Sweet Day" and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's 2017 monster hit "Despacito" (feat. Justin Bieber).
One of those stronger songs is "Dance Monkey" by Tones and I which jumped five places to number three after Tones and I's performance at Splendour in the Grass, this song is currently big business on digital sales and streaming, its only being kept off the top spot on streaming by "Senorita". This song also doing well in Norway where it's number two and number five in Sweden.
All of this places "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish in an awkward place as it dropped from three to four, it doesn't quite have the presence to challenge those above it anymore with streaming and sales starting to fall away, same could be said for "Beautiful People" by Ed Sheeran feat. Khalid which dropped one place to number 5.
Steady as she goes for "Goodbyes" by Post Malone and Young Thug at number six while that wasn't the case for "I Don't Care" by Ed Sheeran feat. Justin Bieber which dropped two places to number 7.
Returning to the top ten this week is "Piece of Your Heart" by Meduza and Goodboys which went up four places to number 8.
Also making a one place jump is "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi to number nin (sigh, wish this song would just go the hell away now).
Finally rounding out the top ten is "Choir" by Guy Sebastian which dropped one place to number 10.
Gains
It's not a good sign when the biggest gain of the week "One Thing Right" by Marshmello and Kane Brown which went from 47 to 28. Come on, Australia, we're better than to let this crap go much higher.
Also speakig of complete crap rising, "Lalala" by Y2K and Bbnos leapt from 33 to 25 because that's the sort of song that deserves it...not.
Anyway, "Higher Love" by Kygo and Whitney Houston jumped eight places to 20. and "It's You" by Ali Gatie" broke into the top 20 at number 19 up from 24.
Losses
Most of the losses came for Ed Sheeran songs with the biggest fall going to "Best Part of Me" feat. Yebba which went from 17 to 46, "Remember the Name" feat. Eminem and 50 Cent down from 15 to 30 and "Cross Me" feat. Chance the Rapper and PNB Rock down five places to number 12.
5 Seconds of Summer also took a hit this week with "Easier" dropping from 20 to 26 which is good news because that song really blows.
Drop Outs
The drop outs are all Ed Sheeran this week with "Take Me Back to London" feat. Stormzy, "Blow" feat. Bruno Mars and Chris Stapleton, "Lay it all on Me" by Rudimental and Sheeran and "Way to Break My Heart" with Skrillex all gone this week.
New Entries
So we have a pretty interesting set of new arrivals with the highest new debut going to Sam Smith's "How Do You Sleep" at number 14.
Tones and I's latest single from their forthcoming 'Kids are Coming" EP called "Never Seen the Rain" debuts at 38.
Quite surprisingly we only got one song from Lion King, 'The Gift Soundtrack in the top 50 this week with "Mood 4 Eva" by Beyonce feat. Jay-Z and Childish Gambino in at number 48.
Finally Andy Grammer is back on the ARIA chart at number 50 with "Don't Give Up On Me" to complete this week's chart.
So with Taylor Swift and a few others set to debut new songs on the chart, the fight for number one is looking very interesting, can Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello keep the number one spot for a second week? Find out on Saturday at 5pm AEST when ARIA updates the charts.

Charting 1996: July 28th: Return of the Mack hits the top 5
So this week feels...busier somehow and kind more reflective on how 1996 has been as a whole, sure we've had some long term number ones but the chart otherwise has moved quite viciouslyfrom week to week especially in the top ten where there's no greater example...oh sure not right at the top where Fugees keep the number one spot with "Killing Me Softly" and at this point I am beginning to wonder what is going to challenge it.
The challenge probably won't come from Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen's "Theme from Mission Impossible" stuck at number two unable to bring the gap to "Killing Me Softly". It was the same for Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me" at number three and No Doubt's "Just A Girl" at number five.
The big mover comes from Mark Morrison whose song "Return of the Mack" climbed eight places to reach number five this week, this song has momentum, it will be imteresting to see if it can make further inroads next week.
"Glycerine" by Bush remains at number six as does "Children" by Robert Miles at number seven and "Ooh Aah...Just A little bit" by Gina G at number eight.
La Bouche have a second top ten hit in Australia with "I Love to Love" going from 17 to number nine this week. Wow.
Finally Triple X's "X-Files' Theme (Version Dance)" drops one place to number 10.
Gains
Huge gain off the debut for Tracy Bonham's "Mother Mother" up from 26 to 18 this week. It's a decent song and probably deserves to go top ten.
Also getting a 9 place leap off it's debut is The Corrs new single "Forgiven, Not Forgotten" to 21 this week.
Eclipse's cover of "The Look of Love" jumped from 39 to 32 while "Dune Buggy" by The Presidents of the United States jumped from 42 to 33.
Surprisingly this week, there was a massive gain for Marilyn Manson's cover of "Sweet Dreams" as it climbed from 48 to 35.

Top ten worst hit songs of 2010
In the lead up to making my end of the decade top ten best and
worst hit songs of the 2010s and unfortunately we begin with what I consider to
be one of the worst years for the ARIA charts this decade with the mainstream caught
between music that blared loudly and obnoxiously from the club scene and those
desperately trying to plug their ears and pretending that what was going on was not happening while making good to mediocre music so let’s begin with getting the
trash out of the way first and begin with the worst hits of 2010…
Let’s begin this worst list with what was a predictable and
unfortunate presence on the 2010-year end singles chart…The Black Eyed Peas.
10. “The Time (Dirty Bit)” by The Black Eyed Peas.
This may not be the only appearance the Peas make the worst list
but this song is absolutely AWFUL beginning with the slaughtering of the chorus
of Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes 1987 hit “I’ve Had the time of my life” before
launching into this Skrillex inspired dubstep rap mess with vaguely party words
from Will.i.am and Fergie that it’s
almost a relief when Will.i.am sings the chorus before it goes back into the
dubstep style mess and oh interpolating Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This
isn’t the worst Black Eyed Peas song to make this list and we’ll get to it, but
this can rot in hell.
Speaking of bad club music…thank god this stopped being a
thing beyond 2010…
9. “Like A G6” by Far East Movement
There’s not much to be said for this. This is lazy filler
made on a computer with a beat that sounds constipated and lyrics that make no
sense whatsoever, seriously. “When sober girls around me they be actin like they
drunk” doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. I won’t be putting my hands up for
this song any time soon.
This next song would be kind of decent if I could ignore the
one dumb line in the song…
8. “Firework” by Katy Perry
It’s mostly here for that one stupid line that kind of just
blows my mind, the line that goes “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?” for a
song about somebody being akin to a firework? The line is ridiculous no matter
which way you try to put it although given what else Katy released in 2010, its
hardly surprising and no, I don’t feel like plastic bag.
So this young lady was the focal point of the club boom in
2010 and she might well appear on the top ten best list but we need to address
this nonsense first…
7. “Blah Blah Blah” by Ke$ha feat. 3OH!3
Now in 2010, I wasn’t a fan of Ke$ha and for me this song
was one the reasons why, it’s a lazy obnoxious song that kind of sounds like everything
else around it and Ke$ha sounds like a little girl, it really is very irritating
and 3OH!3 phone it in. All set to an instrumental that doesn’t change or evolve
from sounding like somebody dialling on their phone with messy instrumentation
all over the top of it…NEXT…
When I said there’d be more Black Eyed Peas…I meant it…
6. “Imma Be” by The Black Eyed Peas
Ugh. This song fails on the production alone with the watery
sounding snaps and Will.I.Am repeating ‘Imma Be’ to incoherence and Fergie
jumping into her laziest flow in a while bragging about how she’s going to
sipping drinks because she’s shaking her hips then we get to the weak rhymes
and oh god…gang vocals in the background before stepping up into this weird
techno sounding thing with somebody playing random piano keys…because they can.
If you ever wanted to know why and how the Peas fell apart…this
may well have been the start.
Speaking of Will.i.am though, his production messes weren’t
just for his own band…
5. “OMG” by Usher
This song is just incoherent noise complete with the
headache inducing gang vocals only stopping for Usher to say, “Oh My God”. Its
really just a flat flimsy song that really should have just stayed in Usher and
Will.i.Am’s private club as it’s not even fun to dance to or allow anyone to
have a good time with its migraine inducing beat and given Will.i.am managed to
turn this into a Black Eyed Peas sounding mess…I am not surprised.
Justin Bieber turned up in 2010 for better or worse but what
I think has been forgotten is he appeared on this juvenile train wreck.
4. “Eenie Meanie” by Sean Kingston feat. Justin Bieber.
“Baby” by Justin Bieber won’t be making this list largely
because he has to live with the embarrassment that song is but also because “Eenie
Meanie’ represents so much worse because it comes across as abusive, maybe the
girl is indecisive because she isn’t sure how to escape both Kingston and
Bieber, who can blame her when the opening lyrics of the song “Eenie meenie miney mo. Catch a bad chick by her toe. If she
holla (if, if, if, she hollas) let her go”
The word “Shawty” needed to stay in
the 2000s. Just saying.
So yeah from juvenile to a song that
tries to be sexy but manages to be the furthrest thing from it.
3. “Rude Boy” by Rihanna.
This song has been a staple of
Australian radio especially in terms of the throwback hit and unfortunately this
is Rihanna trying so hard to be sexy when the production is this limp synth and
Rihanna barking over the top of it, if you want an example of how unsexy this song
is and then Rihanna says she likes it when he pulls her hair which takes me
completely out of the song. Just no.
I think this song has been
castigated from pillar to post from everyone raking it over the coals so I am
not sure how on earth I can add to it but it deserves to be here.
2. “Hey Soul Sister” by Train
So Pat Monahan’s song writing just
doesn’t make sense whatsoever, lipstick on the front lobe of my left side brains
and then referencing this girl being a game show love connection and being a
virgin like Madonna and oh…Monahan is so obsessed with this girl that his heart
is beating right out of his untrimmed chest which makes the song faintly icky
all set to this weird washed melody from a ukulele of all things. Train would
go on to some more forgettable garbage but you’ll have to wait for another worst
list for that one.
So we’ve reached the peak of this
list and when I scoured the list for this year, I came across a song that represented
the most obnoxious of 2010 and when I said I’d mention 3OH!3 again…well here we
are…
1. "My First Kiss" by 3OH!3 feat. Ke$ha
1. The fact that Ke$ha of all people
is on this load of garbage is actively infuriating because the attitude of the members
of 3OH!3 toward women in this song is disgusting and even worse they aren’t even
attempting to play it comedically over a beat that wouldn’t be out of place in
a primary school playground except without the vulgar lyrical content. Speaking
of the lyrical content, its gross with male entitlement eg: “If I had it my
way, you know that I’d make you say oooh” which just reeks of egotism, dudes,
you aren’t all that, get over yourselves.

ARIA Single top ten/ Chart review: 22nd July. It's the Ed Sheeran show.
We got ourselves an album bomb because almost every single song from Ed Sheeran's "Collaborations no.6" project entered the top 50 so that meant it was a pretty wild week for the rest of the chart...well all that wild if you look at the top two in our top ten because for yet another week "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X remains at number one and at this point it's continuing to frail as it edges closer to Ed Sheeran's record because it really has been only digital sales and the frequent remix releases keeping it at the top, it still manages keep streaming darling "Senorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello at number two, it's got streaming but its digital sales have been its let down in terms of getting that number one.
A remix with Justin Bieber saw "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish recapture lost ground and move up three places to number three.
"Beautiful People' by Ed Sheeran feat. Khalid stayed at number four while most surprisingly "I Don't Care" by Ed Sheeran feat. Justin Bieber dropped two places to number 5. Would havr thought the release of the album would have helped keep this song at number three but nope.
Post Malone's "Goodbyes" feat. Young Thug drops one place to number six. I expect this song to stick around though as Post Malone songs have the habit of doing.
Ed Sheeran's fourth song in the top ten "Cross Me" feat. Chance the Rapper and PNB Rock regained ground as it jumped seven places to number seven.
Tones and I's "Dance Monkey" looks like being a huge hit as it jumped two places to number eight. I expect this song to continue it's upward momentum this week.
"Choir" by Guy Sebastian drops two places to number 9 while "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi drops two places to number ten. In the latter's case, that's a good thing...want it gone.

There was a change within the top 5 though with "Just A Girl" by No Doubt moving to number four pushing "Nobody Knows" by The Tony Rich Project back to number five.
From there though, the rest of the top ten looks fairly stagnant with "Glycerine" by Bush at number six, "Children" by Robert Miles at number seven "Ooh Aah...Just A Little Bit" by Gina G at number eight and "X-Files Theme (Version Dance" by Triple X at number 9.
LeAnn Rimes has her first top ten hit with "Blue" jumping four places to number ten.
Gains

Eclipse's cover of "The Look of Love" stumbled down nine to 39.
Unfortunately Powderfinger dropped the ball with "Pick You Up" down from 24 to 35.
New Entries
Tracy Bonham snares highest debut of the week with her first single called "Mother Mother" from her upcoming debut album "The Burdens of Being Upright". "Mother Mother" in at number 26.
Also new this week, is the new single for Human Nature with "Tellin' Everybody" arriving at number 32.
The Presidents of The United States of America's latest effort "Dune Buggy": turns up at number 42.
Latest single from The Cranberries, "Free to Decide" enters at number 47.
Marilyn Manson notches a top 50 arrival with his cover of the 1980s Eurythmics classic "Sweet Dreams" in at number 48.
Finally "Show You Love" by A.K. Soul feat. Jocelyn Brown gets some love by entering at number 49.

ARIA singles top ten/chart review: July 14th 2019. Post Malone and Young Thug waves their Goodbyes in the top ten
So for the last couple of weeks I have been suspecting that we're on the verge of change at the very, certainly streaming has suggested that it's time to move on from "Old Town Road" even if digial sales have been proping up this song's esistence at number one and imching it closer to the record for most weeks at number one certainly that was the case this week with "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X spending yet another week at number one making it the fourth longest number one in ARIA chart history, it's got three weeks to go at number one to break the record of 15 weeks at number one set by Ed Sheeran in 2017 with "Shape Of You"
However the challengers for the top spot are rising thick and fast and the first of those lies at number two with "Senorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, this song looks like being the one to take number one of any this week as it continues to rule streaming and is making big gains on digital sales and I am not convinced that the latest remix of "Old Town Road" with Mason Ramsey and Young Thug is having the desired impact for "Old Town Road".
It was a steady week for Ed Sheeran with "Beautiful People" feat. Khalid holding firm at number three...this song is a player for number one especially with the impending album bomb from Sheeran's Collaborations number 6 project as is Sheeran's lead single from the project "I Don't Care" with Justin Bieber at number four.
Post Malone's new single "Goodbyes" feat. Young Thug debuts at number 5. Honestly this song should rise given its doing well on streaming but not on sales which is odd.
"Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish is at number six but it appears to have gotten some kind of boost of the really kind of awful remix with Justin Bieber (probably the first misstep of her career) so I don't think we have seen the last of this song in the top ten.
Guy Sebastian's "Choir" is the first of two Australian songs in the top ten rising three places to number seven.
"Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi dropped two places to number eight while "Piece of Your Heart" by Meduza and Goodboys dropped two places to number nine/
The seconf of the two Australian songs in the top ten is "Dance Monkey" by Tones and I which rose seven places to reach the top ten but with the Ed Sheeran album bomb coming, I don't expect this to hang around in the top ten unfortunately.

The biggest gain of the week belongs to Kygo and Whitney Houston's cover of "Higher Love" which jumped from 34 to 25 this week.
Miley Cyrus gained some traction for "Mother's Daughter" this week with that song going up to 29 from 37 last week.
Finally Blanco Brown's "The Git Up" rose six places to 13. I expect this song will be in the top ten post the Ed Sheeran album bomb.

So can somebody explain why "Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer is back at number 50, don't get me wrong, I like the song, it's just a surprise to see it back in the top 50.
Losers

Charting 1996: 14th July. No Doubt about the jump into the top ten
So this week was interesting because for the second week in a row we havea sog tumping into the top top ten quite high as well from outside of it plus a new entry inside the top 20 but we'll get to all that in a moment because Fugees have kep the number one spot for another week as it continues to just rule everything sales wise.
It's not surprising that with all the hype around the new Mission Impossible film that "Theme From Mission: Impossible" by Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen rose to number two, it pushed "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion back to number three.
The Tony Rich Project remains steady at number four with "Nobody Knows".
Now we get to the big seven place leap for American band No Doubt with their first single to hit the ARIA chart "Just A Girl" up to number five, this song is going gangbusters for them at the moment.
