ARIA Singles Top Ten/Chart Review: 19th October. Dreams of top five for Fleetwood Mac has me Levitating

We got a pretty quiet week here, folks, yes, we got some expected shifts in the top ten but we only got the one new entry (considering New Music Friday was quiet for this chart week...not overly surprising) but let's get stuck into the top ten where I'm happy to say "Mood" by 24kGoldn feat. Iann Diorr spends a third week at number one and right now it's dominating on streaming and while it's not dominant on sales, it looks comfortable at number one for now.

This leaves "WAP" by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion stuck at number two, it's sales are dying in slow motion and it just hasn't got the streaming to match "Mood" anymore however it was enough to keep it ahead of "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry and MNEK at number three which yes is doing much better than the top two on sales, it just doesn't quite have the streaming to challenge either right now which is a shame because I think the song deserves a week or two at number one.

This takes us to..."Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac rising ten places to NUMBER FOUR, this song is not done yet either, it's got decent sales and a surge on streaming, this is staying in the top ten for at least another couple of week.s

It caused both "Holy" by Justin Bieber feat. Chance the Rapper to stay at number five and "Lemonade" by Internet Money and Gunna feat. Don Toliver and NAV to remain glued at number six.

"Savage Love" by Jawsh 685 feat. Jason DeRulo fell three places to number seven, hopefully this song is allowed to now go away...the discourse around this song is getting uglier than the discourse over "WAP"

Breaking into the top ten is "What You Know Bout Love" by Pop Smoke up three spots to number eight, streaming lovers this song so expect this to stick around in the top ten for a bit.

Tate McRae's "You Broke Me First" dropped one place to number nine, this song has streaming so this won't be leaving the top ten while "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles looks to finally be set to leave the top ten down three places to number ten.

Gains

I already mentioned the big gain for "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac up ten spots to number four but what also gained well this week is Ritt Momney's cover of "Put Your Records On" up six to number 12...this is probably going to replace "Watermelon Sugar" in the top ten next week and no, that is not a win.

"This City" by Sam Fischer recovered up from 45 to 38 this week but apart from those the gains were mostly one or two place gains.

Re-Entries

Good news on return front with "Diamonds" by Sam Smith back at number 48, it brought "Ride It" by Regard back at number 50 with it which is kind of odd...

Losers

Much like our gains, there just isn't much in the way of big losers. "Mr Right Now" by 21 Savage and Metro Boomin' feat Drake slipped from 39 to 44 while 'Roses" by Saint Jhn dropped five places to 17

Drop Outs

All three drop outs this week are from Blackpink with "Lovesick Girls", "Bet You Wanna" feat. Cardi B (actually thought that one had a chance of sticking around given Cardi B's success with "WAP" this year) and "Ice Cream" feat. Selena Gomez all gone.

New Entry

Our one new entry is from Dua Lipa with "Levitating" at number 35 however it seems like ARIA have accredited Blessed Madonna remix feat. Madonna and Missy Elliott as the reason for the song charting when it probably should have been the remix with Dababy that got the credit. I'm fine with the song being here though as the album version is fantastic.

Next week...another new song from Justin Bieber this time with Benny Blanco and maybe a return for a Guy Sebastian song or two off the back of the release of his album but it could be the last pretty quiet week for awhile rumours of Drake, Ariana Grande (Ariana's confirmed to drop her album on October 30th) and even Adele dropping new albums in the next weeks so things are about to get wild. We'll find out if Fleetwood Mac can go any higher when the chart updates on Saturday at 5pm

2000 Sound: 15th October: On A Night like this, I Want Candy and Black Coffee

Just me or are the is the chart really unstable right now? We have a change at the top and movement right up and down the charts so let's begin with the top ten where the big story is a return to number on for "On a Night Like This" by Kylir Minogue which climbed four spots to re take top spot but it's not a comfortable number one by any means.

This of course means "Most Girls" by Pink, which despite it getting pushed back to number two this week, is a chance of returning to number one next week.

What has momentum is Spiller's "Groovejet (If this Ain't Love)" which climbed five places to number three on the back of strong sales push, this is also a player for the number one spot.

This is not case for "Shackles (Praise You)" by Mary Mary which fell one place to number four, "Music" by Madonna down three places to number five and "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams to number six.

The big surprise was the sudden one place drop for "Fill Me In" by Craig David to number seven, this song looked like breaking into the top five last week but that didn't happen somehow.

Also down one to number eight is "B-Boys & FlyGirls" by Bomfunk MCs, this should be gone from the top ten soon...or at least I hope it will be.

At number nine is the one place gain for "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera, it pushed past "Everything You Need" by Madison Avenue which slipped down one to number ten.

Gains

Samantha Mumba's "Gotta Tell You" looks like being a hit in the making as it rose seven places to break into the top twenty at number 16 while "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus  jumped five places to 18.

Savage Garden's "Chained to You" got unchained, rising seven places to 21 while Powderfinger's "My Happiness" rebounded from 31 to 25.

Modjo's "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)" climbed nine places to 41.

Losers.

So the biggest loser this week "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem as it plummeted from 30 to 42 while Daphne & Celeste slipped ten places to 50 with "U.G.L.Y"

Destiny's Child suffered a five place plunge with "Bug A Boo" and "Jumpin' Jumpin'" crashed through the floor down eight to 30

Britney Spear's "Lucky" dropped six places to 19.

New Entries

The new entries begin with All Saints taking the highest new entry of the week with a song I actually really like, it's called "Black Coffee" and yeah,,it's just as good as their top ten hit "Pure Shores"

Backstreet Boy Nick Carter's little brother Aaron is on the chart this time lodging at 33 with his cover of Bow Wow Wow's "I want Candy"

Melanie B's latest solo single "Tell Me" debuts at number 43 while American boyband BBMak enter at number 47 with :"Back Here"

Finally The Avalanches hit the top 50 with "Frontier Psychiatrist" at number 49

ARIA Singles Top Ten Chart Review: 12th October. Bet You Wanna Be having Dreams

Well this week...happened, we got a slew of new entries and a return not to mention the big gain outside the top ten that everybody is watching.rise but let's start with the top ten where for a second week, "Mood" by 24k Goldn and Iann Dior remains at number one pretty much down to streaming and some sales. The top three really haven't changed at all with "WAP" by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion remaining at number two and "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry and MNEK at number three.

Meanwhile an unaccredited remix with BTS saw "Savage Love" by Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo rebound one place to number four. I'd like to see the song gone soon, I am pretty darn tired of it now however it went past the much worse "Holy" by Justin Bieber and Chance the Rapper down one to number five.

"Lemonade" by Internet Money and Gunna feat. Don Toliver and NAV remained steady at number six but I expect this song to stick around and climb higher in the weeks ahead unfortunately however the at isn't the case with "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles which remained steady at number seven thanks to decent streaming that hasn't died yet somehow.

Then there's "You Broke Me First" by Tate McRae which got a boost off the back of streaming to jump two places to number eight because we need a third rate Billie Eilish knock off in the top ten right now...

Down one to number nine is "Breaking Me" by Topic feat. A7S because this song is bleeding on streaming right now. I can see this leaving the top ten next week.

Finally up four places to number ten is Jason Derulo's "Take You Dancing"...so Jawsh 685 has revived Jason Derulo's music career...great...

Gains

So there was one major gain this week that being for "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac which rose from 39 to a new peak of 14, it has now out peaked its original 1977 run on the charts, it's also a fair chance to go top ten next week which would be fantastic however it's rise also meant that combined with the new entries mostly everything else got pushed back.

Re-Entries

Just one return this week with "Ice Cream" by Blackpink feat Selena Gomez returning at number 49 off the back of the debut album from Blackpink debuting at number two.

Losers

The biggest fall this week belong unsurprisingly to 'Franchise" by Travis Scott feat. Young Thug and M.I.A as it tumbled from 31 to 44 this week.

"Heather" by Conan Gray got the skids down from 33 to 40 while "Wishing Well" by Juice WRLD dropped six places to 50.

"Popstar" by DJ Khaled and Drake slipped nine places to 35 this week as did "Mood Swings" by Pop Smoke to 28.

"Rockstar" by Dababy feat. Roddy Ricch wen down six places to 17.

Drop Outs

Some massive hits this year like "Don't Start Now" by Dua Lipa, "Adore You" by Harry Styles, "Rover" S1mba feat. DTG and "Stuck with U" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber are all gone and all guaranteed of making the year end list for 2020

Unfortunately "Diamonds by Smith is also gone but it took "Mad at Disney" by Salem Ilese with it. Disappointed for Sam as "Diamonds" is one of their best songs to date.

New Entries

So the biggest new arrival of the week is from Pop Smoke who has entered the chart at number eleven with "What You Know Bout Love"...this song is likely battling with "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac for a place in the top ten next week.

Shawn Mendes album title track "Wonder" is in at number 13. This song looks like it might quietly get big so we'll have to see.

Now let's deal with the two Blackpink songs that entered the chart this week off the back of the album with "Lovesick Girls" at number 27 and "Bet You Wanna" feat. Cardi B at number 42. I doubt either will stick around but we'll find out in the weeks ahead.

Finally 21 Savage and Metro Boomin's collaboration with Drake called "Mr. Right Now" entered at number 37 and was the only song from "Savage Mode 2" to reach the top 50.

That wraps up a pretty busy week. Next week, all eyes on the top ten to see what could make a move in given the weakness around the lower half of the top ten right now, new entries possibly from Bebe Rexha working with Doja Cat and maybe a new entry from AC/DC...we'll find out on Saturday at 5pm AEDT

Thursday, 8 October 2020

2000 Sound: 8th October. Lady, Give Me Just One Night as Most Girls goes to the top

So right now I am not sure where on earth things are heading on the singles chart right now mostly because there's no clear sign of what has momentum and traction going forward especially as we got a new number one this week so let's dig in starting with the top ten where Pink snags her first number one single in Australia with "Most Girls" riding whatever sales traction it can get to the top of the charts but this is not going to last especially with "Music" by Madonna falling back to number two but it's still a player for the top here.

As is "Shackles (Praise You)" by Mary Mary which climbed one  place to number three while Robbie Williams regained a place to number four with "Rock DJ" although this might be because "On A Night Like This" by Kylie Minogue just lost steam to drop two places to number five.

"Fill Me In" by Craig David continues to rise climbing one place to number six, this song is doing surprisingly well.

What I didn't need to get a three place boost to number seven is "B-Boys & Flygirls" by Bomfunk MCs because somehow we have to make this too annoying to be background noise a hit.

Well at least Spiller's "Grrovejet (If This Ain't Love)" arrived in the top ten up three places to number eight. It's a welcome presence in the top ten, the song is pretty good.

Down three places to number nine is "Everything You Need" by Madison Avenue while finally the second of the new arrivals to the top ten is "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera which rose six places to number ten.

Gains

So we had some sizeable gains this week particularly from Samantha Mumba with "Gotta Tell You" up nine spots to 23 while "I Wanna Be With You" by Mandy Moore is up eleven to 14.

Madasun's slow rise continues as "Don't You Worry" jumps five places to 15 while "U.G.L.Y" by Daphne & Celeste also climbed five to 40.

Re-Entries

Just the one return with Toni Braxton's "Spanish Guitar" back at number 48.

Losers

Sisqo's "Unleash the Dragon" falls eight places to 43 while "Gravity"  by The Superjesus drops from 39 to 44 (bit of a shame really because that song is great).

"If I Told You That" by Whitney Houston and George Michael slipped from 37 to 41 while "Toca's Miracle" by Fragma is losing steam as it fell from 38 to 42 this week.

"Bug A Boo" by Destiny's Child got scared by a bug so it's down off it's debut to 33.

"The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem plunged eight places to 30...bit surprising, thought for sure this was going to be a top ten hit. "Something Deep Inside" by Billie Piper slipped five to 29 off of it's debut.

Then there are two hits that fell hard this week, one being "Jumpin' Jumpin'" by Destiny's Child down nine to 23 while Anastacia's "I'm Outta Love" also plunged nine to be unceremoniously dumped from the top ten to 17.

New Entries

The biggest new entry came from boy band 98 Degrees at number 21 with "Give Me Just One night (Una Noche)". The song is tolerable so I guess I wouldn't mind if it becomes a hit.

Savage Garden are dancing to Madonna with their new single called "Chained to You" at number 28 while Vengaboys dive in at 45 with "Uncle John from Jamaica"

Finally a song that appears to be gaining traction and could well be a hit comes from a French house dup calling themselves Modjo and they are in at number 50 with "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)"

ARIA Singles Top Ten/ Chart Review: 5th October. Australia always in a Mood for a new number one but thunder only happens when it's raining

This week is a remarkable one, we have a week where there several stories worth attention here, one being the return to the top 50 of an iconic 70s classic, a new talent rising to the top ten and a new number one so there is plenty to get to here so first up let's tackle the matter of our top ten and the new number one that being "Mood" by 24k Goldn and Iann Dior, it got to number one thanks mostly to streaming and a sales advantage of it's closest competitor. I for one couldn't be happier this has finally got to the top of the singles chart, it's a damn great song.

Former chart topper "WAP" by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion fell back to number two as it just couldn't go with "Mood" on streaming, it also lost a lot of traction on sales as well which didn't help it's cause but it remained comfortably ahead of "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry feat MNEK which while it's doing better than the top two on sales but it just doesn't quite have the streaming to match the top two just yet.

Consistent streaming and sales kept "Holy" by Justin Bieber feat. Chance the Rapper at number four somehow. I really want to see this song gone sooner rather than later.

Now what might stick around bit longer is "Savage Love" by Jawsh 685 and Jason DeRulo, which remained at number five however a remix with BTS was released on Friday which means this song could rebound. The remix isn't great at all either.

Then we have a slew of songs that benefitted from the collapse of "One Too Many" by Keith Urban and Pink to number 19 like "Lemonade" by Internet Money and Gunna feat. Don Toliver and NAV up one place to number six, "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles up one to number seven and "Breaking Me" by Topic feat. A7S also up one to number eight.

Saint Jhn returns to the top ten up three places to number 9 with "Roses". Seriously, I thought we were done with this whiff of a song.

Finally in a first Australian top ten for this artist, "You Broke Me First" by Tate McRae is at number ten having rose four places, this song has traction is probably going to stay in the top ten even if it's just really pale attempted imitation of sound that Billie Eilish has done better.

Gains

So the gains are a bit all over the place here but "Ain't It Different" by Headie One feat. AJ Tracey and Stormzy continues to be a hit in the making as rose from 29 to 16 this week. (I wish it didn't sample "Butterfly" by Crazy Town but that's another story entirely);

Ritt Momney's "Put Your Records On" continues to be a thing by climbing fourteen places to number 20. This song is going to stick around and be a hit for some bizarre reason, I don't like the production on this thing.

Machine Gun Kelly's "My Ex's Best Friend" feat. Blackbear rose from 35 to 22 following the release of MGK's album "Tickets to My Downfall", an album that has surprisingly divided opinion. I actually think the album is a lot of fun and worth checking out.

Re Entries

Here's the other big story for this week, thanks to a Tik Tok meme going viral, Fleetwood Mac's 1977 single "Dreams" is on the ARIA singles chart at number 39. It peaked at number 19 on the Kent Music Report chart during it's original chart run back in 1977 and didn't make the year end list for that year so yeah it would be awesome if we did make this song a hit in 2020 and give Fleetwood Mac the hit they kind of never really had in Australia apart from "Tusk"

Losers

So I already mentioned the unsurprising fall of "One Too Many" by Keith Urban and Pink to 19 so outside of that "Popstar" by DJ Khaled and Drake fell five places to 26 while "Rain On Me" by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande also fell five to 29 and "Heather" by Conan Gray dropped from 27 to 33 this week.

A little disappointing was the five place fall of "Kings & Queens" by Ava Max to 37  as the hype dies for that album of hers.

Drop Outs

Two reasonably big drop outs with "The Woo" by Pop Smoke and "Smile" by Juice WRLD and The Weeknd both gone, they took "OK not be OK" by Marshmello and Demi Lovato and "Ice Cream" by Blackpink and Selena Gomez with them, although the latter is likely to be back next week given the release of that Blackpink album on Friday.

New Entries

Three new entries this week with Travis Scott teaming up with Young Thug and M.I.A for the highest new entry of the week with "Franchise" at number 31. I am not sure about the longevity of this one just yet.

Same could could said for Sam Smith's 'Diamonds" in at number 46. Would love to see this become a hit because it is the best new song of the week.

Salem Ilese has her first charting hit with "Mad At Disney" debuting at 50, I expect this one to stick around unfortunately.

That ends quite the bizarre and actually...kind of good week. Next week probably will see some Blackpink with the return of "Ice Cream" and How You Like That" along with the collab with Cardi B, hopefully one or two songs off that shockingly really good "Savage Mode 2" by 21 Savage and Metro Boomin'. Shawn Mendes also returned with a new single which is likely also chart. We'll find out on Saturday at 5pm AEDT

Thursday, 1 October 2020

2000 Sound: 1st October: Teenage Dirtbag has Everything You Need while Music's back at number one

This week was a busy one folks so let's get straight into it with the top ten where we start with the unfortunate but predictable return of "Music" by Madonna to number one because basically nothing challenged it this week and sales were at least consistent.

It's closest competitor is "Most Girls" by Pink rising five places to number two this week on the back of a serious sales boost, hell, it's probably the reason why "On A Night Like This" by Kylie Minogue fell back to number three as it couldn't maintain those massive sales.

This places "Shackles (Praise You)" by Mary Mary in an awkward spot because it shifted down one place to number four, it's sales really are slowly dying, it seems like it might fade out of the top ten soon enough but we'll have to see.

Robbie Williams held firm at number five this week with "Rock DJ" which is a good thing because right behind it is the highest debut this week coming from Madison Avenue with "Everything You Need" at number six...now I don't expect this song to last in the top ten but given it's not a good song I am annoyed its here.

Which is good news for the continued upward momentum of Craig David's "Walking Away" which rose three places to number seven, this could go top five soon however some of that rise can be put down to the sudden four place collapse of Anastacia's former chart topper "I'm Outta Love" down to number eight, sad but it's on its way out naturally

The same could be said for "Lucky" by Britney Spears which took a three place tumble to number nine.

Unfortunately rising sevn places to number ten is Bomfunk MC's "B-Boys & Flygirls". Can we just stop and not let this become a hit, please? Bad enough "Freestyler" got to number one.

Gains

So we've got two songs that broke into the top twenty this week with "Let's Get Loud" by Jennifer Lopez up from 23 to 19 and Madasun's pretty good "Don't You Worry" up two places to 20.

Beyond that...well... there's a ten place gain for Nine Days with "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" to 33. This song is as catchy as hell so I hope its a hit while "Friends Forever (Graduation)" by Vitamin C went up five places to 40.

Losers

"Day & Night" by Billie Piper lost all traction this week to slip twenty places to number 24 while "Everything You Want" by Vertical Horizon lost eleven places back to 46 which is a shame because I really like that song.

In much better news, "I Think I'm in Love With You" by Jessica Simpson crashed from 33 to 47 while Lonestar's "Amazed" dropped fourteen places to 50.

A song I am ambivalent on is "Could I Have this Kiss foreever" by Whitney Houston and Enrique Iglesias as it fell hard from 32 to 49.

"Toca's Miracle" by Fragma plunged nine places to 38 while it was a similar tale for "Say It Isn't So" by Bon Jovi as it dropped from 19 to 28.

Bardot's "Theae Days" skidded down six to 27 while "Breathless" by The Corrs is down nine places to 23.

Finally "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem dropped from 16 to 22 and "Try Again" by Aaliyah dropped six places to 21.

New  Entries

We have an interesting slew of new entries outside of Madison Avenue's "Everything You Need" at number six.

American band Wheatus have somehow managed to lodge their first ARIA chart single at number 15, the song is called "Teenage Dirtbag", the song is pretty good but still very weird it debuted this high.

At number 24 is Billie Piper's follow up to "Day & Night" called "Something Deep Inside"...I'm pretty meh about this one if i am to be honest, "Day & Night" feels more memorable.

Destiny's Child return at number 26 with "Bug A Boo", it's better than "Jumpin' Jumpin'"...I guess?

American R'n' B star Samantha Mumba has her first ARIA charting single with "Gotta Tell You" at number 32...I really like this song...might be the best of the new arrivals this week.

Finally, Green Day's "Minority" check in at number 36, again, this song is fine...it's a typical Green Day song.

ARIA Top Ten Singles/Chart Review: 28th September. Is the race for number one on?

So this week was finally interesting in terms of the number one spot and the top ten because we got some movement and some interesting shifts that I have no idea will end up sticking around long term but let's start with what is starting to brew at the very top where "WAP" by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion remains at number one for a sixth week but the song is starting to show signs of weakness as it started slipping on sales and even more crucially on streaming especially on Spotify.

All that makes "WAP" vulnerable to "Mood" by 24kGoldn and Iann Dior which is getting plenty of streaming traction...just needs to get some consistent momentum on streaming and it could well surpass "WAP" for number one.

It pretty much leaves "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry feat. MNEK a bystander watching as two heavyweights duke it out, its got great sales but only solid streaming but it's not quite as competitive with the two songs above it

We have the first two new entries in the top ten (three overall in the top 50) with "Holy" by Justin Bieber feat. Chance the Rapper in at number four, Now I won't talk too much about the song's quality of the song here because I am planning to do a top 20 ranked on this week but it debuted this high thanks to a combination of good sales and streaming which means it could be here awhile.,,yay (sarcasm).

It was enough to push "Savage Love" by Jawsh 685 feat. Jason DeRulo down one place to number five as it list ground on streaming with sales really keeping it in the top five.

Next up we have a new entry that shocked plenty of people, "One Too Many" by Keith Urban feat. Pink in at number six! It's Urban's first top ten hit on the all genre ARIA singles chart and it got there purely on sales, it's had enormous sales through out the past week.

"Lemonade" by Internet Money and Gunna frat. Don Toliver and Nav is into the top ten up six places to number sevem....thanks to streaming because of course streaming would love the most basic of hip hop songs.

The rest of the top ten are the songs that have probably overstayed their welcome in the top ten with "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles which slipped two to number eight, "Breaking Me" by Topic feat. A7S down four places to number nine and finally "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch which dropped three to number ten.

Gains

The gains this week are mostly muted with the biggest gain of the week was for Machine Gun Kelly's "My Ex's Best Friend" feat. Blackbear to 35 (I expect another rise for this next week given MGK released his album yesterday and it's actually not bad),

"Popstar" by DJ Khaled and Drake gained 4 places to 21. "Kings & Queens" by Ava Max only managed a two place rise off the back of the album release to 31.

Losers

So some really big losers this week including "Ice Cream" by Blackpink and Selena Gomez down ten to 50...this has stuck around longer than I had hoped...oh well it will be gone next week hopefully.

"Smile" by Juice WRLD frat. The Weeknd down from 32 to 45 while "Wishing Well" also by Juice WRLD slipped from 38 to 42 and "Come & Go" frat. Marshmello down six to 20.

"Secrets" by Regard and Raye down eight places from 29 to 37 while much to my relier "Together" by Sia slipped from  27 to 32.

Finally "Heather" by Conan Gray down six to 21.

Drop outs

None of three drop outs are all that surprising with "Be Kind" by Marshmello and Halsey, "Tap In" by Saweetie and "Over Now" by Calvin Harris and The Weeknd all gone and most likely won't be back.

New Entries

So apart from the two new entries in the top ten, there was one other new entry this week with a cover of Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On" by American singer Ritt Momney aka Jake Butler at number 34.

So that wraps up the week..not sure what will hit the chart in terms of new releases...maybe that new Travis Scott song, we'll have to see when the ARIA singles chart updates on Saturday at 5pm
