2000 Sound: 25th June. Anastacia's Outta Love in the Top Ten as Jessica Simpson turns John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane" into a sappy love song

Ughh so I am really not happy with where things are heading on the chart this week, yes, the highest new entry of the week is a good song but there are some bad signs at the very top of the charts...you want proof? Well okay...Madison Avenue spends a second week at number one with "Who the Hell Are You?" and really it's only just holding up on sales and the fact that it's only just hanging on is alarming because right behind is "Thong Song" by Sisqo which rose to number two on the back of some still very solid momentum that won't fucking die already.

Also a contender for the top is "Freestyler" by Bomfunk MCs which rose two places to number three this week and yeah this might well be the song to watch in the weeks ahead...wish the song was better, anyway all of this pushed "There You Go" by Pink down two places to number four and puts it in a really awkward spot because it seems like its challenge for number one has died a little unfortunately.

The big surprise this week is that Bon Jovi's "It's My Life" is up five places to number five this week! Looks like being a hit after all which is good to see because I kind of like the song.

American singer and songwriter Anastacia has the biggest new entry of the week with "I'm Outta Love" debuting at number six this week, this song has the potential to be huge, folks. Radio is loving this.

The rest of the top ten is pretty uneventful with "Never Be The Same" by Mel C and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes sputtering down one as it's on its way out anyway while "Shine" by Vanessa Amorosi remained at number eight.

Also on the way out is Britney Spears "Oops!...I Did It Again" which stumbled down five places to number nine and finally "He Wasn't Man Enough" by Toni Braxton skidded down three steps to number ten to round out the top ten.

Gains

Bit of a slow week for gainers with the biggest gainer looking to be "What's a Girl to Do" by Sister 2 Sister up to 19 from 25 while S Club 7's "Two in a Million" went up four places to 25.

Losers

Mist of the losers this week seems to be triggered by our massive swathe of new entries which we will get to but top ten hit "Adelante" by Sash! dropped from 24 to 40 this week, it's secured it's place on the year end list...I'm frankly surprised it was a top ten hit at all.

Also suffering a big hit was The Whitlam's "Blow Up the Pokies" which tumbled twenty places to 43.

Bardot's "Poison" dropped ten places to 46 this week as it fades out naturally ("I Should Have Let You Go" is doing well...up two places to 14 this week)

New Entries

So I have already talked about "I'm Outta Love" by Anastacia debuting in the top ten at number six and looking like being a huge hit but we got a slew of other new entries up and down the chart this week, beginning at number 15 with *NSYNC's new single from their album "No Strings Attached" called "It's Gonna Be Me"...it's pretty much a slice over produced pop music but it's fine....I guess...

Speaking of pop music, Mandy Moore is back on the charts with her new single called "So Real" in at 27 and in many ways reminds me of her hit "Candy" in tone. It's not bad per se but I don't see it having the same success as it's predecessor.

A candidate for the worst list if this becomes a hit is Jessica Simpson's new single "I Think I'm in LOve With You" in at number 30. Seriously, couldn't come up with your own melody and sound so had to go and take John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane" for this slice of cooing sappy lovesickness, the groove that Jessica Simpson's vocals can't match by the way.. Ugh.

Finally into some rock with American rock band Unwritten Law lodging "Lonesome" at number 36...again it's not great but I'll sure take it over Jessica Simpson!

An Australian all girl trio called Real Blondes are back on the chart with their new single "I Won't Let Go" at number 48...I actually kind of like this, yeah the lyrics are a bit clingy but it's a decent song.

Limp Bizkit make another unfortunate appearance on the chart at 49 with "Take A Look Around"....WHY?

Finally, an Aussie in the form of Alex Lloyd lodges "My Way Home" at 50. Nice!.

ARIA Singles top ten/Chart Review: June 22nd. "Rover" rovers into the top ten and Harry Styles gets a chart high on Watermelon Sugar

So we have a quite busy week here with four new entries and some big moves in the top ten, not quite a massive shake up but hey still it's good news especially as the top ten was starting to feel very static however that static continued at number one with "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch remaining at the top of the ARIA Singles chart for a fifth week, while ever it's got this ridiculous streaming, this song is a lock on nunber one right now.

"Roses" by Saint JHN kept number two but it's really just streaming holding this song up now while the same could be said of "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd although sales are better for it than they are for "Roses"

Leaping one place to number four this week is "Breaking Me" by Topic feat. A7S. this song could be a player for number one as it is doing very well on sales but needs massive streaming gains to get closer to "Rockstar" however it did enough to push past "Rain On Me" by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande which fell back to number five, this song just hasn't got the longevity that Gaga probably would have hoped for with Ariana on the track which is a shame because the song has grown on me a fair bit in recent weeks.

Speaking of growing on me, that can be said of "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles which climbed six places to number six this week on the back of some remarkable streaming and even sales, we probably need to consider that Harry's album "Fine Line" is doing remarkably well months after it's release.

Following it's success in the UK, "Rover" by S1mba feat. DTG is the biggest gainer this week as it climbed from 25 to number 7 this week! It's not a bad song by any means but it's a genuine surprise to see this doing so well, it pushed "Supalonely" by BENEE feat, Gus Dapperton down two places to number 8.

Rounding out the top ten are the one place losses for "Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion at number nine and "Stuck with You" by Ariana Grande feat. Justin Bieber.

Gains

So I already talked about our biggest gain being "Rover" in the top ten but there were other big gains this week, some of them not so good like the ten place gain to 28 for "Gooba" by the Soundcloud Waifu or the fact that "Party Girl" by StaySolidRocky went up two places to break into the top twenty at 19.

However "Look into My Eyes" by Brando went up ten places to 31...a song that has grown on me a little in the past few weeks.

Losers

The biggest loser this week is "Say So" by Doja Cat which suddenly fell nine places to 16...good. About damn time.

Halsey's :"You Should be Sad" slipped from 29 to hit 36 this week while "The Scotts" by The Scotts dropped from 36 to 44 because the song is not at all memorable and I do not understand how the hell it got a top ten debut.

Drop Outs

So yeah we lost "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish again but if it means we also saw "After Party" by Don Toliver, "Sour Candy" by Lady Gaga and Blackpink and "Life is Good" by Future and Drake gone too then that can only be a good thing!

New Entries

So how do our new entries shape up, well the highest new entry of the week belongs to 16 year old Sydney rapper known as The Kid Laroi who has teamed up with the late Juice WRLD (Juice WRLD was Kid Laroi's mentor during Juice WRLD's Australian tour) for "Go" in at number 23, it's hard to know if this will have any staying power going forward but its certain something that is very respectful of Juice WRLD as a person.

Just when you thought Jason Derulo's music career was over, New Zealander Jawsh  685 has decided to revive it with a song called "Savage Love (laxed - Siren Beat) in at 24...this song seems like it is going to be a hit and in the top ten soon. I don't really mind it, it's really so stupid that you can't hate it.

Easily the worst song of the four to debut this week is "Trollz" by the Soundcloud Waifu feat. Nicki Minaj in at 45, this song will be gone next week given the lack of streaming or sales traction it has.

Finally DJ Regard is back the charts in an attempt to follow up "Ride It", this time teaming up with Raye for "Secrets" in at 48, now this might actually be better than "Ride It". It's a good song, check it out

That wraps up this week, next week we're likely to see Beyonce and maybe Amy Shark hit the charts and I expect "Savage Love" to either reach the top ten or go very close to, we'll find out when the chart updates on Saturday at 5pm

Thursday 18 June 2020

2000 Sound: 18th June. Madison Avenue ask "Who the Hell Are You" from atop the chart.

This week was busy...especially in our top ten and more broadly on the chart so let's not waste any time and get straight into it where we have a new number one..."Who the Hell Are You?" by Madison Avenue which rode extraordinary sales momentum to take the number one spot this week.

It's nearest challenger is "There You Go" by Pink which rose two places to number two this week and you know...it MIGHT have the moment to get to to number one if the songs behind it weren't strong which is where "Thong Song" by Sisqo comes into the picture having jumped three places to number three because Australians still think he is singing about about a woman wearing the footwear rather than g-strings.

All of this pushed last week's number one "Oops!...I Did It Again" by Britney Spears back to number four and left it in a pretty awkward spot going forward because it doesn't really have the ability to challenge the front runners on the chart and it's also coming under threat from "Freestyler" by Bomfunk MCs which climbed 5 spots to number five and looks set to be a challenger for number one which is unfortunate because the song sucks.

The rest of the top ten ate songs that got belted by the moves above it basically with "Never Be The Same" by Mel C and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes down four to number six. "He Wasn't Man Enough" by Toni Braxton hit a two place skid to number seven while Vanessa Amorosi had a little "Shine" scrubbed off down one to eight.

Destiny's Child lost out big down six places to number nine with "Say My Name" while Bon Jovi's "It's My Life" fell one place to number ten.

Gains

Not too many big gains this week with the biggest gain being for Faith Hill's "Breathe" which climbed from 42 to hit 28 this week, this is huge in the US so I wouldn't be surprised if it picked up more traction in the weeks ahead.

Fragma's "Toca's Miracle" had a good five place gain to 15 this week.

Re-Entries

Australia cannot decide what to do with "Back At One" by Brian McKnight so it's back at number 41.

Losers

Oof, it's been a busy week on this front, let's start with the former chart toppers that lost big this week with "Bye Bye Bye" by *NSync down from 22 to 39 while "Poison" by Bardot slipped from 24 to 36.

The big plunges also happened for former top ten hits as "Adelante" by Sash! plummeted from 13 to 24 this week while "Candy" by Mandy Moore dropped eleven places to 49 this week.Ouch,

New Entries

So apart from "Who the Hell Are You" by Madison Avenue debuting at number one, what else debuted this week?

The Vengaboys are in at 13 with their newest single "Shalalala Lala" while the rest of the debuts are in the 40s including for Australian band Invertigo with their first ARIA charting single called "Desensitized" at number 40 (this song is pretty good. Please check it out)

Also in with a new single at 48 is Midnight Oil's cover of Russell Morris song "The Real Thing"...this is a thing apparently...

Finally Eiffel 65 hit the charts again at 50 with "Too Much of Heaven"

Tuesday 16 June 2020

ARIA Singles Top Ten/Chart Review: 15th June. Muted week is somehow also busy

A quiet week overall in terms of new releases meant that we got a strangely Tmuted but still busy week with just one new entry but moves up and down the charts.

Let's start with where it wasn't busy in the slightest at the very top of the chart where "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat.Roddy Ricch has extended its stay at number one by another week and let me tell you now, this song has a pretty solid hold on number one as it rules on streaming and while sales aren't quite there, it streaming is enough to give this song top spot for awhile.

The next three songs aren't likely to challenge for the top with "Roses" by Saint Jhn back up to number two and "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd back up to number three, both because "Rain on Me" by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande began falling apart on streaming and sales softened to make fall back to number four and all that makes it vulnerable to what's behind it.

"Breaking Me" by Topic feat. A7S looks to be a likely player for the top spot soon as it climbed to number seven as it took the sales lead and is gaining rapidly on streaming.

Gaining a surprise boost this week was "Supalonely" by Benee feat. Gus Dapperton which rose back into the top ten up five places to six mostly thanks to streaming.

All this was enough to push "Say So" by Doja Cat down two places to number seven this week as sales for this song have finally lost some steam as have sales...thank goodness.

"Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion recovered two places to number eight thanks mostly to streaming.

The big loser of all the frantic reshuffling in the top ten is "Stuck With U" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber as it fell three places to number nine this week mostly because nobody remembers this song exists.

Finally "Death Bed" by POwfu feat. Beabadoobee fell one place to number ten and seems to be on the way out.

Gains

The biggest gain of the week belonged to S1mba's "Rover" feat. DTG which went up eleven places to 25 this week.

"Ride It" by Regard recovered five places to 30 while Lil Mosey's "Blueberry Faygo" regained some ground by jumping six places to 34.

"Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles seems headed for the top ten as it rose four to twelve this week...this song has some serious momentum behind it right now. Unfortunately the same could be said for "Go Crazy" by Chris Brown and Young Thug which rose four places to 16 somehow.

Re-Entries

There were two re--entries this week with "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish back at 49 and "Life is by Future feat. Drake at 50.

Losers

Can't really complain about the big losers this week with the biggest being the generally mediocre "Sour Candy" by Lady Gaga and Blackpink falling forty places to 48.

The Scotts dropped eleven places to 36 with "The Scotts".

Drop outs.

Gone are "Stupid Love" by Lady Gaga following it's re-entry on the back of the album last week, it took "Bruises" by Lewis Capaldi (thank god, two songs souring up the chart is more than enough without a need for a third) and "Daisies" by Katy Perry.

New Entries

Just the one new entry this week with Brando's "Look into my Eyes" debuting at 41 this week, it features an interpolation of the chorus of  Eddie and Charles 1992 hit "Would I Lie to You" (I guarantee most of you haven't thought about that song in ages)

Anyway that wraps up this week's chart review, another pretty quiet week for new releases so this week's chart will be interesting when it's released on Saturday at 5pm.

Thursday 11 June 2020

2000 Sound: 11th June. Britney Does it Again at number one as Bardot wishes they never let us go

So this week was busy with plenty of new entries and moves in the top ten...just not at number one where "Oops!...I Did It Again" by Britney Spears remains at number one due to strong sales yet again, it held off a sudden resurgence from "Never Be the Same Again" by Mel C and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes which rebounded one place to number two probably due to the fact that "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child had a sudden slow down in sales however it did hold off "There You Go" by Pink which remains at number four.

Completing the top five is "He Wasn't Man Enough" by Toni Braxton which climbed one place to number five. Sisqo continues to climb the chart with "Thong Song" up four to number six (Is this what a meme song would look like in 2000?), they both helped to push "Shine" by Vanessa Amorosi down two places to number seven.

Then we have "Holiday" by Naughty by Nature and "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi steady at numbers eight and nine respectively.

Rounding out the top ten is "Freestyler" by Bomfunk MCs which climbed three places to number ten because we need more awful music in the top ten.

Gains

Most of the big gains come within the top twenty with "Rip It Up" by 28 Days up eight spots to 12 this week, can see this being a top ten hit down the track.

Kaylan's "Rock Me All Night" got a surprise seven place boost to 14 while "Day & Night" is up five to to 11 for Billie Piper.

Aqua's "Around the World" is up from 41 to 35 this week.

Re-Entries

Two re-entries and they both keep bouncing on and off the chart wth "SexBomb" by Tom Jones and Moussse T back at 47 and "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit back at 50 (we can have better rock on the charts than Limp Bizkit, people...come on)

Losers

A lot of the big losers were songs that were already on their way out like "Candy" by Mandy Moore dropping ten places to 28, "Pure Shores" by All Saints also dropping ten places to 45. "Bloke" by Chris Franklin plunged six to 48 and "Poison" by Bardot losing ten places to 24 (More on Bardot in the new entries)

"Adelante" by Sash! fell out of the top ten down six to 13 this week after a pretty impressive top ten run while "Don't Give Up" by Chicane dropped from 11 to 19.

New Entries

Three new entries this week with Bardot earning the highest new entry of the week with their second single "I Should've Never Let You Go" at 15, this song is so much better than "Poison", it's not even close.

German trance group Fragma have hit the charts with "Toca's Miracle" new in at 20, this song has been big in Europe so not surprising it's hit the Australian chart.

Finally in at 21 is Aussie band The Whitlams with "Blow Up The Pokies"...objectively the best of the new arrivals this week. Be interested to see if this becomes a hit.

Tuesday 9 June 2020

ARIA Singles Top Ten/Chart Review: 8th June. A sweet top ten debut for "Sour Candy"

This week was a busy one, a couple of new entries and some shifts up the chart that are worth a mention (a bit complain about too but we'll get to that when we go through the gains this week) but let's deal with our rather stagnant top ten first where for yet another week, it's "Rockstar" by DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch at number one and again it's because of streaming and it's utter dominance there.

The release of "Chromatica" really didn't help "Rain On Me" by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, which remained at number two, to challenge for the top spot because again streaming is letting this song down. Gaga and Ariana fans, you cannot complain about it not going number one if you aren't going to stream "Rain On Me" yourselves!. Sales are good so I don't see this falling from number two for awhile.

The same could be said for "Roses" by Saint JHN which remains at number 3 as its sales and streaming are still reasonably solid right now, also for "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd glued to number four with sales and streaming still remarkably good (likely to be the biggest hit in Australia this year right now)

"Say So" by Doja Cat remains steady at number five and "Stuck witb U" by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber at number six...although let's hope these two songs are on the way out because they both suck.

A seven place gain has seen Topic's "Breaking Me" feat. A7S break into the top ten at number 7, don't be surprised if this song is a future number one hit.

The highest new entry of the week belongs to Lady Gaga with the help of k-pop girl group Blackpink as "Sour Candy" debuts at number eight. I am not certain this song will stick around though, it's already fading on streaming.

:"Death Bed" by Powfu feat. Beabadoobee slipped two places to number nine thanks to a slip on streaming while "Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion also dropped two places to number ten.

Gains

So there is a little bit to complain about in the gains because the biggest gain of the week is "Go Crazy" by Chris Brown and Young Thug up fourteen spots to break into the top 20 at number twenty for some bizarre reason...probably to do with Tiktok.

"Party Girl" by StaySolid Rocky unfortunately continued to climb, it's up to 29 from 37. We don't need this garbage to become a hit, people.

Also breaking into the top ten is "This City" by Sam Fischer whichr rose from 21 up to 17 this week. Great news for Sam.

The release of Kygo's album "Golden Hour" helped "Lose Somebody" feat. OneRepublic to rise from 43 to 31 this week.

Re-Entries

The lone re-entry is "Stupid Love" by Lady Gaga at number 45 off the back of the release of "Chromatica"

Losers

So the biggest loser this week was "Gooba" by Soundcloud Waifu which dived from 23 to 37 proving once again that Soundcloud Waifu has one week shock value but that's about it.

"Daisies" by Katy Perry wilted six places to 50 while "After Party" by Don Toliver is finally packing up and going home to sleep off the hang over down to 44.

"Blueberry Faygo" by Lil Mosey has passed it's best before date dropping eight places to 40.while "If the World Was Ending" by JP Saxe and Julia Michaels may start feeling like their chart run could be over soon as it fell from 33 to 39.

"Boss Bitch" by Doja Cat got fired from 25 down to 34 while :"In Your Eyes" by The Weeknd suffered a poke in the eye down from 15 to 28.

Drop Outs

So we lost "Life Is Good" by Future and Drake (good!), "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish (I like the song but it had it's time) and "Lose Control" by Meduza feat. Becky Hill and Goodboys (Likely makes the year end list but yeah it had spent 30 weeks on the chart).

The only song I am sad to see gone is "Righteous" by Juice WRLD. That song deserved so much better...

New Entries

So we have two other new entries other than "Sour Candy" by Lady Gaga and Blackpink at number eight.

Lewis Capaldi is at number 46 with "Bruises" while "Ur So F****** Cool" by Tones and I debuts at 49.

That wraps the week. I think a change of number one is out of the question unless "Rockstar" suffers a shocking collapse. bit of a quiet week on the new release front with sales giving Daryl Braithwaite some hope of notching a song on the chart, we'll find out when ARIA updates the chart on Saturday at 5pm

Thursday 4 June 2020

2000 Sound: 4th June 2000. Australia, Sisqo isn't singing about god damn footwear!

This week is kind of chaotic, it was a busy one too as we got some big moves, your standard mix of new entries and...a new number one so let's not waste any more time and get to our top ten where taking number one is "Oops!...I Did It Again" by Britney Spears, her second number one in Australia and it got there because Alof some seriously good sales being enough to edge out "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child which fell to number two this week on slowing sales.

This places "Never Be the Same Again" by Mel C and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes in an awkward place because it doesn't really have the sales to challenge the top two and is more under threat from Pink's "There You Go" which climbed two places to number four (this song's success has been surprising, Pink is having a break out year), it pushed past "Shine" by Vanessa Amorosi which fell one to number five.

Toni Braxton's "He Wasn't Man Enough" is upending everything I said about top ten debuts not sticking around as it climbed one place to number six.

"Adelante" by Sash! is heading out as it fell two places to number seven while "Holiday" by Naughty by Nature climbed one place to number 8.

Rounding out the top ten are two arrivals to the top ten, that being "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi climbing from 15 to 9 this week, it had a good sales week but Sisqo's "Thong Song" climbed THIRTY places to hit number ten...seriously? We really want a song about asking to see a woman's thong in the top ten? He isn't singing about fucking footwear, Australia!.

Gains

Already talked about "Thong Song"...it's the biggest gainer this week but also gaining big is the pretty awful "Freestyler" by Bomfunk MCs which climbed nine places to 13.

Another big gainer is Groove Terminator's "One More Time (The Sunshine Song" which climbed from 41 to 25 this week.

"Put Your Lights On" by Santana frat. Everlast jumped nine places to 34 this week as did Moloko's "The Time is Now" to 36.

Faith Hill's "Breathe" is up eight places to 40

Re-Entries

Just the one re-entry this week with Westlife's "Flying Without Wings" back at 45.

Losers

It was an ugly week on this front but the biggest loser was M2M's "Mirror Mirror" which just hasn't been able to get any moment going as it tumbled from 30 to 43.

Former number one "Bye Bye Bye" by *NSYNC slipped seven places to 17 this week. while Bardot's "Poison" took a hit from number 8 to 14. Ouch!

"All The Small Things" by Blink 182 dropped seven to number 27.

New Entries

Billie Piper is back on the charts with her new single "Day & Night" and it's the highest new entry this week at number 16.

The other two new entries are from Aussies with Sydney band Lo-Tel landing their first ARIA charting song with "Teenager of the Year" at 48 while "Somebody Like You" by Jimmy Christo from The Wog Boy soundtrack is in at 50.
